GIBBONS, VIRGINIA

November 15, 1941 – July 18th, 2023

It is with great sadness, that the Family of the late Virginia Gibbons, announce her passing on July 18th, 2023, at Curtis Memorial Hospital in St. Anthony. She passed peacefully into the arms of the Lord surrounded by family.

Virginia, also known as Virg or Virgee, was 1 of 14 children, born to John and Susan Williams on November 15th, 1941. In 1959, Virginia married the love of her life, Chesley Gibbons and lived on Current Island for many years until they were relocated to Forrester’s Point. Together, they had 9 children and with love and hard work, in times when things were difficult, they raised them to what they are today, with their traits following down the line through many of their generations. In 2016, Virginia moved to the Ivy Durley Home in Flower’s Cove, where she loved so much. Virginia was a very devoted mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, sister-in-law, aunt, and friend. She will be missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.

Leaving behind with loving and fond memories that will be cherished for a lifetime, 8 daughters and 1 son; Rhoda (Roy), Louise (Bax), David (Ellen), Nancy (John), Joyce (Rol), Sandra (Winsor), Elva (Claude), Debbie (Darren), and Lorie (Tony). Grandchildren; Ches (Diana), Darren (Nyeisha), Santana (Damien), Connie (Jeremy), Danica (Ash), Slader (Josephine), Melissa (Zane), Blade (Ryan), Crystal, Dominique (Wilga), April (Kerry), & Victoria, Great Grandchildren; Whitney, Nash, Parker, Carter, Claira, Brooke, Katie, Larissa, Scarlett, & Remington. Siblings/In-laws; Ruby (Gerald), Cora (Melvin), Stanley (Bessie), James (Cornelia), Edith (Kirby), Reginald (Sharon), MaryAnn Colbert, Wilson Taylor and a large circle of family and friends, especially those at the Ivy Durley Home in Flower’s Cove. She will be missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.

Virginia spent the last few weeks of her life at Curtis Memorial Hospital, where she was always treated with the upmost respect and compassion. Her family would like to thank all the nurses that cared for her during her time there. Their presence and care to our mom will never be forgotten and we thank them all so much!

Virginia is predeceased by Husband Chesley Gibbons, Grandson Roy Jr, Parents John & Susan Williams, In Laws Samuel & Deborah Gibbons and a large number of family members gone before.

Family service to take place at St. Mary’s Anglican Church in Black Duck Cove on Thursday, July 20th, 2023, time to be announced. The funeral will take place on Friday, July 21st, 2023 at 3:00pm with Rev Short officiating. Interment to follow at the cemetery in Black Duck Cove.

WHITE, GEORGE WILLIAM

September 4, 1929 - June 13, 2023

With great sadness and heavy hearts, we announce the peaceful passing of the late George W. White aged 93 years.  Born on September 4,1929 in Sandy Cove, NL, he was the son of the late William and Rhoda (nee: Caines) White.  He is survived by brother-in-law Douglas Parrill, special cousin and friend Calvin Whalen and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, families and friends. 

Uncle George loved his family.  He possessed a steadfast faith and was committed to the betterment of his community.  He enjoyed nature and the great outdoors, he liked having nice clothes, cars, quads and argos and he was always ready for a “good time” with family and friends. Uncle George was a great soul.

 He was predeceased by his loving parents, William and Rhoda White, brother Eldred (Dora) White, brother Anthony (Cinderella) White, sister Rita (Elias) Coles, sister Virtue Parrill, twin brother/sister (John/Rosanna) White and sister Gertrude (Wilga) White.

Our sincerest appreciation and thanks are offered to the staffs at Revera Cambridge Estates, Portugal Cove Road, St. John’s and Ivy Durley Place, Flowers Cove for their kindness and great care during Uncle George’s stay at their homes.  We also whole-heartedly thank the staff at 4 North B, Health Science Center, St. John’s for their outstanding professionalism and compassion while he was in palliative care.

In memory of Uncle George, donations may be made to St. Thomas’ Anglican Church, Sandy Cove or the Sandy Cove/Savage Cove Cemetery Fund.  Flowers are graciously accepted.

 A traditional “wake” [hymn sing] will be held at St. Thomas’ Anglican Church, Sandy Cove on Friday, June 16, 2023 beginning at 7:00 pm.  A funeral service will take place on Saturday morning at 11:00 am at St. Thomas’ Church, Sandy Cove with interment to follow at the Savage Cove Cemetery.

STEVENS, WILLIAM HENRY

August 24, 1945 - September 6, 2022

William Henry was born in Shoal Cove East to Gracie and Porter Stevens on August 24, 1945. William Henry was a fisherman most of his life. William Hen and his mother went to the Caines’ home in Forrester’s point for a few nights and that's where he met the love of his life, Sadie Taylor. In 1967 they bought a home and moved to Shoal Cove East where they raised their two daughters.

Left to mourn with loving memories are his Wife, Sadie; Daughters, Patsy (Dennis), Marion (Absalom); Grandson, Troy (Virginia).

He is predeceased by his Parents, Gracie and Porter Stevens as well as his Grandson, Sylvester William.

The family would like to extend their thanks to all those who have helped in any way.

Visitation to take place from St. Thomas Anglican Church in Sandy Cove. The family service will be held on Monday, September 11, 2022 at 8:00 pm. The funeral will take place the following day at 2:00 pm with Rev. Canon Short officiating, interment to follow in Savage Cove Cemetery.

GENGE, MABEL

January 1, 1932 - June 24, 2022

Passed away June 24, 2022 at her home in Deadman’s Cove at the age of 90 years.

Mabel is forever loved and remembered by her Daughters, Joy (Michael) Byrde, Una Genge; Son, Jock (Dale) Genge; Grandchildren, Danielle and Christopher; Great-grandchildren, Karlee, Hannah, Isaac and Alyssa; Sister-in-law, Olive Samson; Brother-in-law, Cyril Shepard, as well as a large circle of nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

Mabel is predeceased by her Husband, Rendell; Son, Floyd; Parents, John and Edna Chambers; Brother, Curtis; Sisters, Mary, Olga, Ethel, Minnie, Bertha, and Marion; Mother and Father In-Laws, Charles and Eva Genge as well as many brothers and sister in-laws and other family members.

Visitation was held from St. Matthews Anglican Church in Anchor Point from where the service took place on June 28, 2022 at 2:00 pm with Rev. Short officiating. Interment followed. GENGE, ROLAND

September 23rd, 1933 - May 4th, 2022

Passed away May 4th, 2022 at the Strait of Belle Isle Health Center at the age of 88 years.
Roland is forever loved and remembered by his Loving Wife of 65 years, Jessie; Daughter, Wanda (Truman); Sons, Gary (Patsy), Roland (Edna), and Cyril (Maxine); Grandchildren, Mick (Nadia), Kaye (Jamie), Boyd (Nancy), Cagney (Mark), Trista (Late Wilfred Genge Jr), Jessica (Corey), Christopher (Glenda), and Travis (Stacie); Great-Grandchildren, Andrew, Ryder, Brooklyn, Landon, Adam, Averie, Cruz (Late Ryan Gary), Natalie, Rylan, Luke, Daniel, Caylee and Cole; Sister, Dulcie; Brother, Isaac; Special Niece, Pam, as well as large circle of Nieces, Nephews, extended family and friends.
He is predeceased by his Parents, Alice and Abraham, In-laws, Cyril and Joyce; Sister, Tena; Brothers, Noah, Kirby, and Stedman.

WHITE, MARIA (Nee Ryland)

January 16th, 1942 - March 22nd, 2022

It is with great sadness the family of Maria White announce her passing Saturday, March 19th, 2022, at St. Clare’s Hospital, St. John’s, NL at the age of 80 years.

Leaving to mourn with loving and fond memories, Children: Gary (Linda), Vicky (Aaron), Dale (Morris), and Jody (Frank); Grandchildren: Joey (Josie), Brittany, Gillian, Zackary, and Mia; Great-grandchildren: Parker and Ryland, as well as her Brothers (Clifford, Garfield, Hedley) and Sisters (Ella, Georgina, Ruby, Emily), and many other family and friends.

She is predeceased by her husband Gideon White, Father (Augustus Ryland), Mother (Victoria Ryland), Sister (Greta Barney), and Grandson (Morris Jr. Scanlon).

 The funeral service will take place at St. Thomas Anglican Church in Sandy Cove at 2:00 pm on Friday, March 25th, 2022 with Rev. Short officiating. STEVENS, IRENE VIVAN

March 24, 1945 - March 8, 2022
Passed away at the Charles S Curtis Memorial Hospital in St. Anthony ant the age of 76. She leaves to mourn her loving husband, Garfield Stevens; Children, Monty (Wanda), Michelle (Dione), Marvin (Nancy), Mondale (Clifford), Mia (Ricky); Grandchildren, Shenay, Lanni, DJ, Garfie, Kyle, Jordy, Kol, Bailey, Carter; Greatgrandson Kade; Brothers, Bolden and Lewelyn; Sisters, Eliza, Ruth, Ada as well as a large circle of extended family and friends.

She is predeceased by her Father, Josiah; Mother, Nora; Sisters, Gertrude and Diane; Granddaughter, Miranda; Father-in-law, Isaac and Mother-in-law Beatrice.

DEMPSTER, CURTIS CLAUDE

May 19, 1944 - March 6, 2022

It is with profound sadness that the family of Claude Dempster announce his passing on March 6th, 2022 at the Health Sciences Center in St. Johns.

Claude was born on May 19, 1944 to John and Amy Dempster in Flower’s Cove. He married his love, Mary White on April 18th, 1968 and together they raised 3 wonderful sons and were blessed with 4 grandchildren. During the course of his life Claude had many careers in many locations with his most recent being on the water hauling lobsters in his fishing boat. His favorite places to be were on the water, in the woods and with his family. Claude was a hard working, busy man and could most often be found working on his wharf, in his sheds or on various carpentry projects in his home, cabin or sons homes in Alberta. Claude loved to laugh, joke, enjoy life and was known to tell a tale or two when presented with the opportunity. He had a wonderful sense of humor. He made a lasting impression, was loved and put a smile on the faces of all who knew him. He leaves to mourn and will be greatly missed by his wife Mary, sons Claude (Lisa), Toby and Raymond (Melissa); grandchildren Nicholas, Jordan, Trinity and Kiana.

He is survived by his brothers Clyde (June), Don (Cicely) and Harold and sister Katherine; Sister in laws Hazel, Beulah and Yvonne; Brother in law John and special niece DeeDee (Steve, Kaiden, Konnor and Kenzie) as well as a large circle of extended family and friends.

He is predeceased by his parents John and Amy; brothers Anthony (Sara May) and Gord; sister Millie (Clarence); brother in law Ethel Bert; brother in laws Ralph, Sterling, Stedman, Ross and Stewart; sister in laws Sybil, Clara and Vina and parent in laws Raymond and Clarissa White

McLEAN, JOSEPHINE

March 8, 1946 - November 21, 2021

Josephine was born in Pines Cove on March 8, 1946. She was the 5th of 16 born to George Henry and Elizabeth Jane Crane. Josephine was a beautiful and kind hearted woman. She loved spending time with her family and spoiling her grandchildren. Josephine loved going to bingo, playing cards and especially loved her darts. She leaves to mourn her Children, Calvin (Eleanor), Clayton (Dorcas), Colin; Grandchildren; Conrad, Colton, Keegan; Siblings, Ralph (Hannah), Rendall, Garfield (Hazel), Maxwell (Juanita), Myrtle (Isaiah), Joyce (James), as well as a large circle of extended family and friends. Josephine is predeceased by her Husband, Aaron Mclean; Parents, George Henry and Elizabeth Jane Crane; Siblings, John, Earl, Nelson, Roland, Amie Marie, Lennora, Dorothy, Augustine, Evelyn; as well as sister-in-laws, Betty and Una. Passed away November 10, 2021 at the Charles S Curtis Hospital in St. Anthony, at the age of 85 years. He was a kind and loving man and will be missed dearly. He leaves to mourn his Nieces, Nicole (Ted) King, Nadine Parrill (Cody Gibbons) Special Nephews, Melvin King as well as a large circle of cousins, their families, and the residents and staff of the Ivy Durley Place. He is predeceased by his Mother, Adelaide Noseworthy-Tucker; Stepfather, Henry Tucker; Sister, Elizabeth (Betty) Crane; Brother, Alexander Noseworthy; Brother-in-law, Earl Crane as well as other extended family members. Visitation was held from St. Andrew’s Anglican Church in Lower Cove from where the funeral was held on November 13, 2021 at 11:00 am with Rev. Short officiating.
