GIBBONS, VIRGINIA

November 15, 1941 – July 18th, 2023

It is with great sadness, that the Family of the late Virginia Gibbons, announce her passing on July 18th, 2023, at Curtis Memorial Hospital in St. Anthony. She passed peacefully into the arms of the Lord surrounded by family.

Virginia, also known as Virg or Virgee, was 1 of 14 children, born to John and Susan Williams on November 15th, 1941. In 1959, Virginia married the love of her life, Chesley Gibbons and lived on Current Island for many years until they were relocated to Forrester’s Point. Together, they had 9 children and with love and hard work, in times when things were difficult, they raised them to what they are today, with their traits following down the line through many of their generations. In 2016, Virginia moved to the Ivy Durley Home in Flower’s Cove, where she loved so much. Virginia was a very devoted mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, sister-in-law, aunt, and friend. She will be missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.

Leaving behind with loving and fond memories that will be cherished for a lifetime, 8 daughters and 1 son; Rhoda (Roy), Louise (Bax), David (Ellen), Nancy (John), Joyce (Rol), Sandra (Winsor), Elva (Claude), Debbie (Darren), and Lorie (Tony). Grandchildren; Ches (Diana), Darren (Nyeisha), Santana (Damien), Connie (Jeremy), Danica (Ash), Slader (Josephine), Melissa (Zane), Blade (Ryan), Crystal, Dominique (Wilga), April (Kerry), & Victoria, Great Grandchildren; Whitney, Nash, Parker, Carter, Claira, Brooke, Katie, Larissa, Scarlett, & Remington. Siblings/In-laws; Ruby (Gerald), Cora (Melvin), Stanley (Bessie), James (Cornelia), Edith (Kirby), Reginald (Sharon), MaryAnn Colbert, Wilson Taylor and a large circle of family and friends, especially those at the Ivy Durley Home in Flower’s Cove. She will be missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.

Virginia spent the last few weeks of her life at Curtis Memorial Hospital, where she was always treated with the upmost respect and compassion. Her family would like to thank all the nurses that cared for her during her time there. Their presence and care to our mom will never be forgotten and we thank them all so much!

Virginia is predeceased by Husband Chesley Gibbons, Grandson Roy Jr, Parents John & Susan Williams, In Laws Samuel & Deborah Gibbons and a large number of family members gone before.

Family service to take place at St. Mary’s Anglican Church in Black Duck Cove on Thursday, July 20th, 2023, time to be announced. The funeral will take place on Friday, July 21st, 2023 at 3:00pm with Rev Short officiating. Interment to follow at the cemetery in Black Duck Cove.

GIBBONS, RICK

In remembering Rick Gibbons, we say our goodbyes with great sadness. Rick Gibbons, 53, of Plum Point passed away peacefully in St. Clare‘s Mercy Hospital, St. John’s on Thursday July 28, 2022. He was surrounded by many of his loving family and friends. Rick was born on April 30th, 1969 in Flowers Cove, he was the son of Noel Gibbons and Jane Pittman. Rick spent his life running the family business with his brother, Gary Gibbons. He began working at Young’s Home Hardware and later took over as co-manager. Rick worked andran the store for his whole life, with his highschool sweetheart, Roxanne, by his side through it all. Rick had a passion for music and cooking and was known for his love of animals, especially his pet dogs. Left to mourn peacefully by his loving wife Roxanne Gibbons of 21 years, his two daughters, Hailey Gibbons and Vanessa Gibbons, his brother Gary Gibbons (Rupa), his mother, Jane Pittman, his father Noel Gibbons (Sophia), his step-sisters, Betty Genge (Todd), Allison Chambers, his step-brother, Michael Pittman (Tina), his in-laws, Joanne Sinnicks (Arthur), Lorna Sinnicks (Paul), Jake Sinnicks (Linda), his nieces, Alexis Genge, Emily Pittman, Kaitlyn Genge, Hope Gibbons and Jacey, nephews, Dylan Sinnicks, Brandon Sinnicks, Dillon Gibbons, Ryan Sinnicks, Matthew Gould, Evan Pittman and Nicholas Gould, as well as his many cousins and friends. He was predeceased by his grandmother and grandfather Gibbons (Norman and MaryJane), and grandmother and grandfather Young (Wallace and Elizabeth) and his stepfather Jim Pittman. The family service will be held at the Plum Point Church on Wednesday, August 3, 2022 at 7:00pm. The funeral will be held on Thursday August 4, 2022 at 11:00am. The Gibbons family will be there to welcome all friends and relatives.

Passed away June 28, 2020 at the Health Science Center in St. Johns at the age of 63 years. GIBBONS, JUDY

1925-2019

It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Judy Gibbons of Plum Point on May 23rd at Caribou Memorial Veterans' Pavilion in St. John's.

Judy will be sadly missed by her children John (Ivy), Rose (Frank) Boyle, Dwight (Beulah), Genevieve (Rod Caines), Abraham (former daughter-in-law Sherry Hounsell), her grandchildren SheriLee (Borje) Chambers, Janessa (Stephen) Kerr, Sarah Caines (Kevin O'Shea), Jean (Scott) McGrath, David Boyle, Andrew Caines, John Gibbons, and great-grandchildren Michael, Jonathan and Cora.  Her kindness, ever-ready smile and quirky humour will be remembered by all.  

Judy was the daughter of Frank and Sarah (Hoddinott) Samson.  She was predeceased by her loving husband Abraham (Abe) in 2003, and siblings Chesley (Kirsty), Garland (Caroline), Alma, Roseannah (George) Chambers, Daisy (Allan) Saunders, Joyce  Coombs, Grace (Stewart) Taylor, Julian (Bride).  She is survived by her sister Bertha (Gerald) Payne of Corner Brook, sisters-in-law Jane (James) Toope, Gladys (Roy) Gibbons, Virginia (James) Gibbons and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Judy was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.  Family always came first.  Her devotion, moral compass and strength of character were exemplary.  Even through the toughest challenges, her kind, nurturing manner and her deep love of family persisted.  Judy had an enormous appreciation of life and all living things.  An avid gardener and an enthusiastic berry-picker, she enjoyed every moment in nature.

Heartfelt thanks are extended to Judy's caregivers at Caribou Memorial Veterans Pavilion.  We are so grateful for the love and exceptional care that was provided.

Visitation will begin at 1:00 pm on Tuesday, May 28, at the Anglican Church of the Advent in Plum Point, and there will be a Family Service at 7:00 pm.  The funeral is scheduled for 11:00 am on Wednesday, May 29, followed by the burial at Pond Cove Cemetery.

GIBBONS, WINSTON CHURCHILL

July 4, 1940 – January 4, 2019


Passed away on January 4th from the Western Regional Memorial Hospital in Corner Brook at the age of 78 years. Winston will always be remembered by Wife, Minnie; Children, Marvin, Roger, Michelle, Marilyn; Grandchildren George, Peter, Amy, Alex, Matthew, Ryder, Sam, Ashley, Andy, Jamie; Great-Grandchildren, Hailey, Avery, and Kruz. Visitation was held from the Anglican Church of the Advent in Plum Point from where the funeral was held on January 10th, 2019 with Rev. Jennifer Renouf officiating. Interment followed.

GIBBONS, JAMES

November 3, 1947 – May 20, 2018

It is with great sadness that the family of the late James Gibbons announces his passing. James was born on November 3, 1947 on Current Island. In 1969 he married Gladys Bonnell, together they had two children; Jimmy and Winnie. He had five grandchildren that he adored. He had two sisters; Edith (Isaac) and Lillian (Jim) and bothers Martin (Annie) and Edmund (Paula). He was a fisherman for 30+ years and was an active member of his local fisherman’s committee. Jim was also a proud member of Loyal Orange Lodge and enjoyed Saturday night with his member friends. He will be forever missed. He leaves to mourn his wife Gladys; Children Jimmy (Carol) and Winnie (Darcy); Grandchildren Luke, William, Ben, Makenna, and Micah as well as a large circle of family and friends. James was predeceased by his parents Stephen and Myrtle; Brother Martin; and Niece Eileen. Visitation was held from St. Mary’s Anglican Church in Black Duck Cove from where the funeral service was held on Friday, June 1, 2018 at 11:00 am with Rev. Jennifer Renouf officiating. Passed away on July 8th, 2017 at the Charles S. Curtis Memorial Hospital at the age of 57 years. She leaves to mourn with fond and loving memories her husband Samuel Taylor; Son Corey Gibbons; Grandchildren Marty, Natalie; Brothers Roland (Peggy), Ivan (Jonie), Kirby (Edith); Sisters Donna (Wilfred) Parrill, Susan (Derek) Applin, Kathy (Boris) Hughes; In-Laws Jenita (Edward) Taylor, Jacob (Mary) Taylor; Nephews Christopher, Cody, Casey, Chace, Cade, Drew, Brayden; Nieces Courtney, Terri, Renita, Kaitlyn, Alyssa, Thea; Special Friend Glenda Genge as well as a circle of other friends and family. She was predeceased by her parents Roland and Sybel Gibbons; Niece Renita Taylor; and Nephew Kirby Williams Gibbons. Passed away May 13th, 2017 at Charles S. Curtis Memorial Hospital at the age of 56 years. He leaves to mourn with fond and loving memories his wife Christine Gibbons; Daughter Crystal Anna Gibbons; Special Niece Oriana P. Caines (Goddaughter); Mother Marjorie Gibbons; Brothers Dennis (Cassie), Truman (Bernice), Herman; Sisters Celia (Ward), Ellen (Mike),  Sheilagh (Lloyd); Nephews and Nieces Tamara (Steve), Nathan (Penney), DJ, Chelsey (Andrew), Michael, Joshua, Logan, Marissa (Doug), Christine (Leon), Mandy; Great Nieces and Nephews Aubree, Kaci-Rae as well as sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, and many nieces and nephews in the Pittman family. Royal was predeceased by his Father Nathaniel Gibbons; Grandparents Isaac Gibbons & Sarah-Jane Coates, Walter & Mahala Applin; Father-in-Law Christopher J. Pittman and Mother-in-law Bridgett Pittman. GIBBONS, MERONA MARGARET

Passed away on April 3, 2016 at Charles Curtis Memorial Hospital in St. Anthony at 75 years of age. Born April 15, 1940 to Leander and Minnie Mitchelmore of Green Island Cove. In 1946 her family moved to Main Brook. In 1959 she moved to St. John’s to work in the hospital. There she met her husband, David Gibbons. They married on May 15, 1961. In 1962 she moved back to Main Brook to start her family. She had three daughters and two sons. In 1970 she started her own business, “Gibbon’s & Sons.” In 2000 she retired. She leaves to mourn her Sons David (Gloria) Gibbons, James Gibbons; Daughters Donna Gibbons (Faron Caines), Shirley (Graham) Powell; Grandchildren Shawna Colbourne, Mark Powell, Darren Patey, and Derek Patey; Great-Grandchildren Jenna Coulbourne, Monica Kelloway-Gibbons, Jackson Powell; Brothers Primus Mitchelmore, Baxter (Melinda) Mitchelmore, Harvey (Marilyn) Mitchelmore; Sisters Shirley Simms, Sybil (Lloyd) Piercey, and Inga (Leslie) Coombs. She is predeceased by her Husband David Gibbons Sr.; Daughter Roberta Mitchelmore; Grandson Scott Gibbons; Parents Leander and Minnie Mitchelmore; Brothers Howard Mitchelmore, Trueman Mitchelmore; Brother-in-law Sterling Simms; and Sister-in-law Mae Mitchelmore. Visitation was held at St. Marks Anglican Church from where the funeral service was held on Wednesday, April 6, 2016 at 2:00 pm with Fr. GIBBONS, CAROLINE SR.

Passed away at the Charles S. Curtis Memorial Hospital in St. Anthony on the 10th of January 2015 Mrs. Caroline Gibbons Sr.  of Pond cove in her 90th year. Caroline was born in pond cove, NL on November 14th, 1924 to Walter and Amelia Coombs of Current Island, NL. She Married Guy Gibbons  on May !5th of 1946. together they had 4 Children. Caroline was a loving, Caring and Kind hearted Woman who loved her family dearly. She loved to knit, Cook and Feed everyone who visited her home. Always room for more in her home she loved all her grandchildren and great grandchildren with all her hear and treated them like gold.  Left to mourn are her sons Walter (Caroline), and John (Nancy Ann), Daughter Ruby Sr. (Philemon), Grand children Amelia (Scott), Virginia (Paul), Ruby (Darrol), Guy (Kylie), Great grandchildren Hope, Belle, Jacey as well as a large Circle of other Family and Friends. She was predeceased by her husband guy, Daughter Virginia, Great grandson PG, Mother Amelia, and Father Walter. Visitation was held at The St. Mary's Anglican Church in Black Duck Cove. from which the funeral service was held at 2:00pm on The 14th of January, 2015 with Rev. Marlene Harvey Officiating.
