HOPKINS, ROWENA DORIS

May 16, 1936 - January 12, 2025

Rowena Doris Hopkins was born on May 16, 1936 to William and Annie Hancock. She married Percy Hopkins on May 30, 1958. Together they had 6 Children: Patsy, Wade, Eugene, Bert, Terry, and Larry.

Rowena worked for a short period of time on the Englee fish plant until she got married in 1958 when she then became a stay at home mom and raised her family.

She did her share of knitting and quilt making. She was her husbands right-hand woman. She helped him out at whatever he was doing, be it clearing snow or packing ion their winter wood. When he came out over the hill with this load of wood she was waiting at the basement door with her gloves on ready to work.

Many people young and old spent time at her home and ate many lunches, especially her famous lemon pies. She also gave many meals to her neighbours.

Rowena was a kind, caring, soft-spoken woman. She had a kind word and smile for everyone. She has served her Lord for many years and was faithful to him until he took her home. Rowena passed on January 12, 2025 at the age of 88 years.

She leaves to mourn with fond and tender memories, her Daughter: Patsy Fillier; Sons: Wade (Susie), Eugene (Donna), Bert, Terry (Bonnie), Larry (Mo); Sister: Hazel Brenton; 19 Grandchildren; 23 Great-grandchildren as well as a large circle of nieces, nephews, other extended family, and friends.

Rowena is predeceased by her loving husband: Percy Hopkins; Parents; William and Annie Hancock; Brothers: Willis and Stanley Hancock; Sisters: Verbina Hancock, Fannie Simms, Irene Jacobs, and Grandson: Stephan Hopkins.

Visitation will be held at the Salvation Army Church in Englee, beginning on Thursday, January 16th and continuing to the Funeral Service on Saturday, January 18, 2025 at 2:00 pm with Major Janes officiating with interment to follow.

FILLIER, EMILY ETHEL CAROLYN

April 30, 1925 - June 26, 2024

It is with great sadness that the family of the late Ethel Fillier announce her passing on June 25th 2024 at "White Bay Health Centre" in Roddickton, NL. in her 99th year, with her family by her side.

Born to Matthew and Emmeline (nee Reid) Denney on April 30th 1925. Ethel, raised in Englee, NL, Loved and adored her children.

Left to mourn with found and loving memories are her children; six of her seven sons: Alex, Edgar (Betty), Jack (Patricia), Eugene, Morgan (Teena) and Kirby; Two daughters: Florence (Flo) (Richard) and Doris (Bob). She will be missed by her Step-brother Leonard Fillier from Ontario and especially missed by her 23 Grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren and many Great - Great - Grandchildren.

Predeceased By: Matthew and Emmeline (nee Reid) Denney (Parents), Clancy (Husband), son Junior (Don) and grandson Tyson Fillier.

Ethel was predeceased by her husband Clancy; son: Junior (Don); grandson: Tyson Fillier; and her parents: Matthew and Emmeline (nee Reid) Denney.

Visitation to take place from the Pentecostal Church in Englee, NL beginning on Friday, June 28, 2024 for 7-9 pm. The funeral will take place on Saturday, June 29, 2024 at 2:00 pm with Pastor Andrews officiating. Interment to follow.

NEWMAN, FREDERICK


April 25, 1942 - June 20, 2024

Fredrick was born on April 25th, 1942, to Ben and Gertrude Gillard of Englee, NL. At the age of 2 months his mom died of Tuberculosis (TB) he was Adopted into the Newman family to Cecil and Ameta Newman. This brings such a large number of relatives to Fredrick's family where each and everyone of them are dear to Newman family. He grew up In Englee, Newfoundland and Labrador and remained there for his entire life except for the past month where he was admitted to the hospital in St. Anthony, Newfoundland due to his illness.

At the age of 16 years old Fredrick met the love of his life Alton Newman and they were married on August 31st, 1965 which continued for another wonderful 58 years. Together they had three sons Ransey Newman, Robert Newman, and Travis Newman.

His life was based around the fishing industry also he loved living close to the water and had such an amazing view from his home. He worked in the fish store in Englee, NL for 23 years while fishing part time. After this time, he felt the need to buy is own fishing vessel to support his family and fished full time until he retired in the fall of 1998.

In the fall of 1998 He gave his life back to the Lord and became an active member of the Salvation Army Church in Englee, NL until he could no longer attend due to his illness. Regardless he remained faithful to God while at home with his loving wife before being admitted in the St. Anthony Hospital on May 16th, 2024 where he remained until he went to his heavenly home on June 20th, 2024.

Fredrick Leaves to Mourn his wife of 58 years Alton Newman of Englee, NL; his three sons: Ransey (Sherry) Newman, Robert (Madeline) Newman and Travis (Alva) Newman; Grandchildren: Coutney Newman, Chantel Newman, Calvin Cassell, Jarrett Newman, Colin Newman, and Carmen Newman; 1 Great-Grandchild Memphis Torresan. He also leaves to mourn his siblings: Wilfred Gillard, Dorothy Wells, Carmel Waldron, Ben Gillard, Gregory Gillard, and Joy Ellsworth. Also included in his family is his two stepbrothers: Shem Newman and Colin Newman; two stepsisters: Alzena Ellsworth and Jane Denny who are both deceased; and Sisters-in-law: Velma Simms and Christine Fillier. Fredrick has a large number of family and friends whom he loved dearly.

Visitation will take place from the Salvation Army Church in Englee on Monday, June 24, 2024 from 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm. The funeral will take place on Tuesday, June 25, 2024 at 2:00 pm with Major Crocker officiating. Interment to follow.

CANNING, LILLIAN MARY YVONNE

January 9, 1940 - May 3, 2024

It is with broken hearts that the family of Lillian Mary Yvonne Canning announces her passing at Curtis Memorial Hospital in St. Anthony, NL on May 03, 2024, at the age of 84 years. Lillian passed away peacefully into the loving arms of God, surrounded by her loving family and will forever be remembered for the loving wife, mom and grandmother that she was. On January 22, 1959 she married her soulmate, to that union came seven beautiful children. Lillian gave her heart to the Lord in August 1958 and faithfully served him with all her heart and soul and committed her time as a very active member of the choir for 29 years, head of the Sunday School department for 17 years, president of the ladies group for years and also a Sunday school teacher.

Lillian was the most devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother who was well-loved by all who had the honour to know her. She worked tirelessly to give her family what they needed. Lillian worked at the local fish plant while raising seven children and taking care of her household. She loved to knit, sew, bake and cook. Her family always looked forward to receiving one of her delicious carrot cake or her homemade pickles.

She leaves to mourn with a lifetime of precious memories her husband Wilson Canning. Daughters; Pamela(Perry), Karen, Jean (Scott), Darlene (Morris). Sons; Wayne(Louie), David (Joyce), Morgan (Janice), Travis (Nola) Grandson/son. 17 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, 3 foster grandchildren. Also left to mourn is her darling sister Ruby Sacrey, her brother-in-laws; Martin Canning, Earl (Hazel); Sister-in-laws, Pearl (Calvin), Madonna, Joan(Grant) as well as a large circle of nieces, nephews and extended family and friends.

Lillian is predeceased by her parents Theophilus and Milford Hopkins, Sisters Bessie Fillier and brother-in-law Gilbert Fillier, Daisy Hopkins and brother-in-law Gordan Hopkins. Also Sister-in-law Phyllis Cassell, Susie Canning; brother-in-laws, Harrison Canning, Winston Fillier, Wilbourn Fillier and Albert Cassell. And her son-in-law Melvin Pilgrim.

Public visitation to take place from the Englee Apostolic Faith Church on Sunday, May 5, 2024, and Monday, May 6, 2024 from 7-9 pm. The funeral service will take place on Tuesday, May 7, 2024 at 2:00 PM with Pastor Hewlett officiating. Interment to follow.

ELLSWORTH, ALZENA EMMA

January 27, 1943 - March 6, 2024

Alzena was born on January 27, 1943 to Cecil and Ameta Newman. She grew up in Englee where she lived all of her life. At age 16 she met the love of her life, Charles William Ellsworth, and at age 17 on October 4, 1960, they were married. Together they had 6 children.

Alzena worked for 30 years on the fish plant in Englee until it’s closure in 1992. She was a friend to many throughout her lifetime- anyone who entered her home was welcomed and treated like family.

In March of 2000, Alzena gave her heart to the Lord and became a very active member of the Salvation Army Church. Though, when her son, Kirby, passed away it affected her tremendously, as she had already lost a son years prior. She remained faithful to her God, although she no longer attended church.

After her husband, Charlie, passed, her health slowly declined until her own passing.

Alzena leaves to mourn, her Children: Terry, Cathy, Rocky (Jose), Kim (Elvis); Grandchildren: Ashley, Brandon (Beth Ann), Ocean (Aaron), Martina; Great-grandchildren: Alexandra, Sophia, Danielle; Brothers: Fred, Shem, and Colin as well as a number of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and a large circle of friends. She will be forever missed.

She is predeceased by her husband of 62 years, Charles Ellsworth; Sons: Kirby and Danny; Parents: Cecil and Ameta Newman and Sister; Jean Denney.

FILLIER, NELSON MALCOLM CECIL

February 5, 1947 - December 21, 2023

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Nelson Malcom Cecil Fillier, age 76, at home with his loving wife by his side on December 21, 2023.

He was the son of the late Gilbert and Bessie (Hopkins) Fillier.

He leaves behind is loving wife of 46 years Elvie Fillier. Daughters, Darlene Hynes (Jim), Darlene Fillier- Aubin (George), Delores Fillier (Corey), and Danette Fillier-Aubin (Adam). Sons Chris Hefford (Heidi) and Dustin Fillier (Rachel). 14 Grandchildren, and 5 Great Grandchildren. His brother Melvin Fillier (Sylvia), and Sister Patricia Brophy (Wayne). Along with a large circle of relatives and friends.

He is predeceased by his parents, brother Murdock Fillier, and twin brothers Gilbert and Theoophilus Fillier.

Nelson was very involved in the community. He was a large part of the Lions club. He worked for KFC in St. Johns for a few years before he returned home to Englee , where he worked at the Englee fish plant for over 30 years. Doing various jobs such as Quality Control and Manager. He was known in years since retirement to drive around the town, and going to Michelle’s for his coffee. Where he talked with everyone who entered and always tormented the girls who worked there and the same at Breen’s.

Cremation has taken place. With the funeral service to take place at Salvation Army Church, Englee, with the date to be determined.

CANNING, SUSIE

April 22, 1943 – October 9, 2023

It is with great sadness and broken hearts that the family of Susie Nita Shirley Canning announce her passing at Curtis Memorial Hospital in St. Anthony, NL on October 9, 2023 at the age of 80. She passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family.

Susie will be remembered for her love for her family and her kindness to everyone. She married the love of her life on June 28, 1961 and they had 5 beautiful children together. She gave her heart to the Lord on July 14, 1974 and was very active in the Apostolic Faith church. She was a member of the choir for 45 years, leader of the youth choir, president of the ladies group and a Sunday school teacher for many years.

She was an exceptional wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt and had so much love for everyone. She worked very hard for her family and made sure they had everything they needed and wanted. She loved to knit, sew, crochet, bake and cook. She was an awesome seamstress and could make anything from wedding/graduation dresses, quilts or snowmobile seat covers. She made wedding/ birthday/retirement cakes for most everyone in the Englee area. She loved to spend time with her husband berry-picking, gardening and splitting and packing in the wood.

Susie is predeceased by her parents Gordon and Daisy Hopkins; parents-in-law Ivan and Myrtle Canning; Daughter Baby Canning; Sister Betty Randell; Sister-in-law Phyllis Cassell; Brother-in-laws Harrison Canning, Albert Cassell, Winston Fillier & Wilbourn FIllier.

She leaves to mourn with a lifetime of precious memories her Husband Martin; Daughter Linda (Nick); Sons, Bob (Loretta), Barry, Brian (Mavis); Grandchildren Crystal (Jeffery), Cory (Gillian), Tyson (Ashley), Tyler, Tylee (Toby), Robin (Cody), Robert (Cathlyn); Great-grandchildren Blake, Summer, Kayden, Chance, Makenna, Tianna, TJ, Mackynzie, Emmett; Brothers Calvin (Pearl), Wilson (Bertha), Scott (Shirley), Kevin (Dorothy), Guy (Sadie); Sister Joan (Rene); Sister/niece (Vivian); Brother-in-laws Wilson (Lillian), Earl (Hazel); Sister-in-laws, Madonna, Louise, Joan (Grant) as well as a large circle of nieces, nephews and extended family and friends.

Memorial service will take place on Sunday October 15, 2023 at 2:00 PM with Pastor Kirby Hewlett officiating. Interment to follow at the Apostolic Faith Cemetery.

FILLIER, RAYMOND

August 17 1943 - July 02 2023

Raymond passed July 2, 2023 at the age of 79 years.

Raymond was a fisherman for over 30 years and retired at the age of 55. Raymond enjoyed moose hunting in the fall with his sons Dwayne and Paul as well as his boat and spent many hours cod fishing with family and friends. In the summer he worked at the fish plant cutting fish and after that he worked in the fish store washing fish. He also enjoyed walking around town and chatting to everyone he came in contact with.

He chatted about the Lord whenever he had the opportunity and he was well known to many people around Newfoundland. Raymond was a devout Christian; serving the Lord and beating the Salvation Army drum for 65 years. He lived his life for the Lord. He will be sadly missed by family and friends.

NEWMAN, WARRICK

May 14, 1932 - December 12, 2022

Mr. Warrick Newman passed away December 12, 2022 from the Curtis S. Memorial Hospital in St. Anthony. He leaves to Mourn his loving Wife, Madeline Newman; Sons: Arch (Lorraine), Rick Newman, Kirby (Belinda) Newman, Dennis (Cindy); Daughter: Sheena (Keith) Newman; Grandchildren: Shevon, Richard, Kiara, Shawna, Sheldon, Sarah, Dj, Matthew, Adam; Great Grandchildren: Olivia, Jack, William, Cody, Alex, Kenji, Ethan; Sisters: Christine, Velma, Alton as well as a large circle of extended family and friends.

Warrick is predeceased by his parents: Chesley and Beryl Newman; Brother: Calvin Newman as well as Sisters: Clementine Hamlyn, and Mary Newman.

RANDELL, BOYCE JUNIOR

September 4, 1950 - December 9, 2022

Boyce was born on September 4th, 1950 in Hooping Harbour to Thomas and Florence Randell. He was the last of six children with two sisters and 3 brothers: the late Ethel Reid (Ludwick), the late Spurgeon (the late Marie), Ruby Randell (the late Freeman), Claude (Jean), Beaton (Shirley) as well as half-sister, the late Winnie Cassell.

He married Alma Elisabeth Cassell on January 30, 1969 in Hooping Harbour. Born to this union was six children. Five Daughters; Glennis Randell (Andre Du Plessis), Phyllis Patey (Scott), Mavis Canning (Brian), Mona Randell (Todd), Shirley Gillard (Howard) as well as son Jeffrey (Vicki Lemay). He also has 16 Grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren and 29 nieces and nephews who will miss him dearly.

Boyce taught in school for two winters in Williamsport. He attended college in Stephenville and then worked for Arthur Locke of Roddickton installing furnaces. He moved into the fishing industry and worked various jobs and positions in plants around the island. This job also included a trip to Oslo, Norway where he dismantled fish processing equipment, prepared it for shipping and put it back together when it arrived in NL.

When he left the fishing industry he started B.J. Randell and Son. A self employed business that serviced heating, air conditioning and refrigeration, that he ran successfully for many years, After retiring his business he worked in Kitchener, ON for a short time before moving on to work at Wilderness North, based out of Thunder Bay. He worked there for 18 years at a fishing resort that he often referred to as a working vacation.

He prayed and accepted Jesus as his Lord and Savior on February 21, 1972 along with his wife, Alma. He devoted much of his life outside of work to the Apostolic Faith work in Englee. He was a choir director for many years, played in the music department, volunteered as a Sunday School teacher, helped build a new church and took on many carpenter projects around the church.

He was known as a Jack of all trades, and lent a helping hand to many friends and family around him. He spent much time in recent years doing whatever he could to help his two brothers (Spurgeon and Claude) living next door, and his sister Ruby down the road.

His love of laughter and fun, being a jokester and his infectious grin was well known around his community. A community that he loved and was proud of. He loved being involved and helping to make it a great place to live.

He had some health issues in past years that he faced with strength and courage. He was back on his feet as soon as possible to face his next challenge head on.

On Saturday, December 3, 2022 his family called the ambulance, as he had been struggling with sickness for the past week. He was transported to St. Anthony Hospital and on Tuesday, December 4, 2022 he was airlifted to Western Memorial Hospital in Corner Brook. He fought to the end and on Friday, December 9th, 2022 at 1:26 pm, he passed peacefully away surrounded by family as they sang the last refrain of “Because He Lives”. When the minister whispered last amen, he took his heavenly flight.

Visitation will take place from the Apostolic Faith Church beginning the evening of Wednesday, December 14, 2022 with the family service to take place on Thursday, December 15, 2022 from 7-9 pm. The funeral service will take place on Friday, December 16, 2022 at 11:00 am with Pastor Kirby Hewlett officiating. Interment to follow.
