GIBBONS, GLADYS MAY

Gladys (Chambers) Gibbons

September 15, 1926 - January 23, 2023

It is with great sadness that the family of Gladys (Chambers) Gibbons announced her peaceful passing on January 23, 2023, at the age of 96, at the Rufus Guinchard Health Center in Port Saunders.

Leaving to mourn with lots of great memories are her children, Edith (Leslie) Toope, Bill (Daisy) Gibbons, Lesley Hillier, Virginia (Jim) Bradford, Vony ( Enos) Langdon, Ivy Toope, and Roy (Eliza) Gibbons.

Her grandchildren Gladys, Loretta, Melanie, Gina, Robert, James, Jessica, Ian, Devon, Jamie, Louis, Lynette, and Alex, and their partners.

Her great grandchildren Ashton, Aidan, Brooke, Luke, Hannah, Kate, Henry, Sophia, Billie, Kingstyn, Finley, and Jade and her sister-in-law Virginia Gibbons, as well as a large number of special nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.

She was predeceased by her parents, Jonathan and Mary Chambers, her husband Roy Sr., her children Louis and Dorcas, her grandson Stefan Gibbons, her son-in-law Graydon Toope, and her grandson- in- law Gary Doyle, as well as all her brothers and sisters.

Gladys grew up in Blue Cove and on February 3, 1952 she married Roy Gibbons and moved to St. Genevieve Bay where they raised their family until 1976, when they moved to Plum Point. Gladys had a large extended family whom she loved to have visits with and to chat with on the telephone and kept in touch with them all. She certainly enjoyed her calls and visits from everyone. She loved hearing about her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She will be missed by all her family and friends.

The family would like to send a big thank you to the staff at the Ivy Durley Place in Flower’s Cove where she lived for 13 years. She made many friends there with the other residents and the staff. We cannot thank them enough for the great care they gave her while she was there. We would also like to thank the staff in Long Term Care at the Rufus Guinchard Hospital in Port Saunders for the special care they gave our mom during her time there.

Family service will take place on Thursday, January 26 at 8pm and the funeral service will be on Friday, January 27 at 11am form the church of the advent in Plum Point with Rev. Terry Coates Officiating

COOMBS, STEDMAN

It is with great sadness that the family of the late Stedman Coombs announce his passing on February 18, 2019 in his 84th year. He leaves to mourn with fond and wonderful memories, his loving wife of 63 years, Vivian Coombs; children Irene (Ray), Hiriam (Pam), Melvin (Connie), Rosline, Barry (Ruby), Rick (Belinda), Lorne (Tina) and Leon (Dale); grandchildren Dara, Melvin Jr, Ocean, Terry, Tammy (Phil), Terry, Riley, Jenna, Maxwell, Callie; 11 great-children, sisters Effie, Dorcas and Dulcie; as well as a large circle of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was predeceased by his parents John and Leah Coombs, mother-in-law Eva Coombs and father –in-law Lambert Coombs, son Terry, grandchildren Denise, Mason and David, sisters Bernadette White, Emily Applin and brothers Leander, Stewart and Gerald Coombs. A special thank you to the doctors, nurses and staff at the Strait of Belle Ilse Health Centre and Charles Curtis Memorial Hospital. Cremation has taken place. COOMBS, MARION EILEEN

July 14, 1935 — September 3, 2017

(née Way) was born in Savage Cove on July 14, 1935, to Ann Maria Way (White) of Sandy Cove and Stephen Way of Savage Cove. Marion passed away in St. John’s after a brief illness at the age of 82 years. Orphaned at a young age, Marion lived at the Grenfell Orphanage in St. Anthony, she spent her summers in Plum Point with her Aunt Ellen and Uncle Noah and is where she met her future husband Ben Coombs. Marion was known in her community for her fine singing voice and her open and warm heart. The home she made with her husband Ben was always welcoming to family, friends and strangers.  Marion was dearly loved by her family and friends. Marion is missed her loving husband of fifty-eight years Ben, and her children and their spouses: Chris and his wife Krista, Dan and his wife Carol, and Sheila and her husband Craig, and her grandchildren Benjamin, Halle, Anna, Ellen and Stephen. She was predeceased by her infant grandson (Carol and Dan), her older sisters Mary Hunt (Way) and Gladys Gontard (Way). In lieu of flowers, donations to the Church of the Advent Plum Point will be graciously accepted. Visitation was held from the Church of the Advent Anglican Church in Plum Point from where the funeral was held at 2:00 pm on Friday, September 8th with Rev. Jennifer Renouf officiating. GENGE, WILLIAM EDWARD

Passed peacefully away at the age of 86 years at the Charles
S. Curtis Memorial Hospital in St. Anthony surrounded by
wife Hazel and all his family, William Edward Genge (March
23, 1928-June 21, 2014) of Flowers Cove. He leaves to mourn with fond and loving memories
his wife Hazel; children Patsy (Roland), Ivy (Roland), Harvey (Lisa), Elaine (John), Marjorie (Wycliffe), Dorcas (Nelson), Pamela (Peter), and Maxine (Cyril); 13 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren as well as a large circle of other family and friends. He was predeceased by his son Robert, parents Henry and Dorcas Genge, sisters Lillian Genge, Johanna Mitchelmore, Constance Way and Polly Whalen, brothers Garfield Genge and Isreal Genge. Visitation was held at St. Barnabas Anglican Church in Flowers Cove from where the family service took place at 7 p.m. on the Tuesday, June 24. The funeral service was held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, June 25 with Rev. Irving Letto officiating. Interment followed at the church cemetery. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Kerry M. WOODWARD, BLANCHE

Passed peacefully away at the John M. Gray Centre on May 24, 2014. Mrs. Blanche Woodward of Boat Harbour, in her 96th year. She leaves to mourn with fond and loving memories her daughter Una (Gerald); sons Enos (Bessie) and Clyde (Patty); daughter-in-law Rowena; nine grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren as well as a large circle of other family and friends. She was predeceased by her husband Nathaniel, daughter Rowena, son Gerald, her parents Henry and Susan and a number of brother and sisters. Visitation was held at the St. Mark’s Anglican Church in Boat Harbour from where the funeral service was held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, May 27 with Rev. Mark O. Wilkoff officiating. Interment followed at the church cemetery in Boat Harbour. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Kerry M. Fillatre Funeral Homes, St. Anthony and Roddickton, Siobhan Mauger, funeral director.

SAUNDERS, GARFIELD ROY

Roy Saunders was born on January 12,1948 to George and Clara Saunders. He had  5 brothers,2 sisters and 6 half sisters. On November 3,1967 he married Priscilla Hedderson, together they had 2 children, Rowena and Jason. He had 4 grandchildren, Jillian, Joshua, Nickolas and Lillie and 1 great grandchild Chloe. He fished in the long liner for a few years before going to Goose Bay for work. Only there for a couple years before coming back  to Cook's Harbour to do what he loved most.... fishing !Roy loved to set potatoes in the summer and he mostly enjoyed digging them in the fall when he could get the chance to cook up a feed of fish ,potatoes and scrunchions and  then to end his meal with a good cup of tea and  a cigarette. His grandchildren were his pride and joy! He loved to watch them play and hear their stories. If he could get them up to something that they shouldn't be at he would. He loved every minute he spent with them. In the last 8 years as a quadriplegic, he spent time at Curtis Hospital and the John M Gray center in St.Anthony. To him the staff were like an extended family. Roy had lots of patience. He never complained about anything, even after he got sick. He loved and adored his kids, grand kids and all his family . He especially adored his loving Wife of 45 years. Roy passed away peacefully at the John M Gray Centre with his family around him on May 22,2014. Left to Mourn: His Loving Wife Priscilla, Daughter Rowena(Christopher),and Son Jason(Roxanne). Grandchildren Jillian, Joshua(Kimberley),Nickolas and Lillie and Great Grandchild Chloe. Brothers San(Eliza),Edgar(Sheila),Melvin(Clara) & Fred(Elsie). Sisters Joyce Cornick & Velma(Morris) Boyd. Half Sister Dorcas and sister in law Marilyn. Predeceased By his Parents George & Clara, Brother Havner, Half Sisters Bessie, Helen, Rebecca, Keziah and Vera. visitation was held at the Anglican Church in Cooks Harbour, from which the funeral service took place at 2:00pm on Monday May 26th  with rev. COLES, WALLACE

Wallace Coles was born on March 10, 1920 in Sandy Cove to Archibald & Eliza Coles.

He was a war veteran who served in World War II for 3 years and 8 months. He showed great pride for his country. After returning from the war, he married the love of his life, Marie on her 17th birthday in Flower's Cove. They had 12 children, 4 of whom died at a very early age.

Five years ago, he lost his oldest son, Lambert, and the love of his life, Marie. With the remaining 7 children they helped to lighten the load of his burden. He was taken care of by his daughters until going to the Ivy Durley Place 1 year ago. He was quite contented and really enjoyed living at the Ivy Durley in the time that he spent there.

He was a very special war veteran in our area. Every year he celebrated Remembrance Day Service at CRMA School in Flower's Cove. He would dress in his uniform all adored with his hat, medallions and of course his poppy. He told stories to the students and staff about his journey to the war.

He also attended the Remembrance Day breakfast in his own community of Sandy Cove every year which began to honor him and other war veterans for what they did for our country.

He was a very hard working man. He spent his summers fishing and the winters working in lumber camps. He also enjoyed going to parties with family and friends. He loved to hear music, dancing and sharing stories of the past.

He lived a long and happy 94 years of his life until he peacefully passed away at Charles  S. Curtis Memorial Hospital at St. Anthony on May 5, 2014. His family and friends have been blessed to have such a wonderful man in their lives for so long. It comforts everyone to know that he is with his family in eternal life.

He leaves to mourn with fond and loving memories his 4 sons; Calvin (Edith), Coy (Vernita), Gorvin (Debbie), Clayte (Wendy); 3 daughters; Lavenia, Patsy (Levi), Darlene (Wood); daughter-in-law; Sheila; 15 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren; sisters; Alma Diamond and Selina White; and sister-in-law; Rita Coles.

He was predeceased by his parents (Archibald and Eliza Coles), wife (Marie), brothers (George, Roland, Lush and Elias), sister (Alice Genge), son Lambert & Son-in -law; Clyde White

Visitation took place at St. Thomas Anglican Church in Sandy Cove, the funeral service followed at 11:00 am on May 8, 2014 with Rev. Marlene Harvey and Joyce White officiating. Burial Took Place at the Anglican cemetery at Savage Cove. Funeral Arrangements where entrusted to Kerry M. Fillatres Funeral home, St. Anthony and Roddickton. Rest in Peace. Lest We Forget. 

STEVENS, ELDRED

It is with great sadness that the family of the Late Eldred Stevens of Shoal Cove East announce his passing on Wednesday, April 2nd, 2014.  He was in his 89th year. He leaves to mourn with fond and loving memories special niece Susan White, as well as other nieces and nephews and a large circle of friends. It is with great sadness the family of Mr. Truman Mitchelmore of St. Anthony announce his passing on Wednesday January 22, 2014 at the Charles S. Curtis Memorial Hospital with his devoted and loving wife and family by his side. Left to mourn with fond and special memories are his wife Ruby, his Son Kirby (Tracey) Mitchelmore, Daughter Kim (Kirby) Short, Four grandchildren Jordan, Brandon, Danielle and Blake. Truman lived to see the passing of his parents Leander and Minnie Mitchelmore, his brother Howard Mitchelmore(Mae), Brother in law David Gibbons, Parent in laws Ernst and Amelia Elliott, their lives he has touched. Visitation was held at The funeral home on West Street, the funeral followed on the 27th of January 2014 from the St. Mary’s Anglican church in St. Anthony at 2:00pm with Rev. Paul C. Mrs. Viola Coombs – Gould of Flower’s Cove was in her 71st year.  She leaves to mourn with fond and loving memories her husband Angus C. Gould(Kayla), Ashely Taylor(Marlin), Clay Taylor(Courtney, Keirsten C. Gould(Brandon), Christopher C. Gould, Great Grandchildren Anna Colleen C. Gould, Chase Kirby Williams Gibbons, Keegan Robert Dyck, Partner of Colleen Jarvis Genge as well as a large circle of family and friends. She was predeceased by her daughter Colleen C. Gould and her parents Philip Dredge and Evelyn Chambers. Visitation was held at the St. Boniface’s Church in Bear Cove followed by the funeral service which was held on January 27, 2014 at 2:00pm with Rev Irving Letto officiating.
