COOMBS, VIVIAN LORRAINE

September 4, 1937 - November 5, 2024

It is with great sadness that the family of the late Vivian Coombs announce her passing on November 5, 2024 in her 87th year.

She leaves to mourn with fond and wonderful memories her children: Irene (Ray), Hiram (Pam), Melvin (Connie), Rosline, Barry (Celyne), Rick (Belinda), Lorne (Tina) and Leon (Dale); grandchildren: Dara, Melvin Jr, Ocean, Terry, Tammy (Phil), Terry, Riley, Jenna, Maxwell, Callie; 15 great-children; sisters: Bessie, Belinda (Stephen), Rowena; brothers: Lambert (Iris) and Isreal (Kathleen); sister-in-law: Dulcie; brother-in-law: Angus, Harrison as well as a large circle of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She was predeceased by her husband Stedman; parents Lambert and Eva Coombs; parents-in-law: Jack and Leah Coombs; son: Terry, grandchildren: Denise, Mason and David; sisters: Olga, Mamie, Lavinia, Elizabeth; brothers Wilfred and Leslie; sisters-in-law: Bernadette, Emily, Dorcas, Effie; brothers-in-law: Cosmo, Leander, Stewart, Eric, Archibald, Melvin and Gerald Coombs.

A special thank you to the doctors, nurses and staff at the Strait of Belle Ilse Health Centre, Charles Curtis Memorial Hospital, John M Grey, and Rufus Guinchard Health Centre in Port Saunders. Thanks to Katrina Myers for regular updates. Also a special thank you to mom’s home care workers, Colleen, Jessie, Carmel, Pam, Dara, and Diane, as well a huge bouquet of flowers to our sister Irene and brother Leon for their continuous support.

Visitation will take place from the St. Margaret of Scotland Anglican Church in Shoal Cove West on Thursday and Friday- November 7th and 8th. The family service will be held on Nov 8, 2024 at 7:00pm, with the celebration of life to take place on Saturday, November 9, at 10:00am with Rev. Canon Terrance Coates and Rev. Marie Smith officiating. Interment to follow.

COOMBS, DERRICK

November 4, 1953 - July 9, 2024

It is with great sadness, we announce the passing of Derrick Coombs on July 9th, 2024 at the Health Science Centre in St. John’s, NL, at the age of 70 years.

Derrick loved and was loved by his family and friends. He enjoyed spending time with them whenever he could. He enjoyed fishing, especially for salmon and trout, and would take any of us along to share in the joy with only a moments notice. He also enjoyed boating, moose hunting, working, picking things apart, fixing, and building things. In his younger years he played darts, was a member of the Blue Bird Lions Club, Orangeman and Legionnaires. He worked many jobs and always with the same loyalty to each and every one of them. He lived a good life, did what he wanted when he wanted, and left this world the way he always said he wanted to go: quickly without long suffering. He will be deeply missed by all.

Derrick was Born in Flowers Cove on November 4, 1953 to Kenneth Frederick Coombs and Effie Ellen (Mitchelmore) Coombs, he leaves to Mourn mother Effie Coombs, Brothers Hubert Coombs (Myrtle), Seaward (Rose), Sisters Emma Coombs, Annie (Coombs) Pilgrim (Otto), Marolyn Coombs (Barry), Nieces and Nephews, Wendy Coombs, Nelson Coombs (Tina), Unessa Coombs, Kenneth Pilgrim, Effie Adamache (Will), Briana Pilgrim, Alison Patey (Jose), Corbin Coombs, Gage Pilgrim, Robbie Coombs, Ross Pilgrim. Aunts, Caroline (Mitchelmore) Rowsell, Eleanor Mitchelmore, Many Cousins and Friends.

COOMBS, PHILEMON

With great sadness and heavy hearts, we announce the peaceful passing of Philemon Coombs aged 79 years. Born Feb 10, in Shoal Cove West, NL. Son of the late Abraham and Bridget Coombs. Philemon (Free) was a man who loved to be on the go visiting his friends, having a good drop of rum and a good old yarn. Philemon spent a lot of his time working in Lab City as a heavy equipment operator. He also worked in the plant in Anchor Point. He loved to torment and carry on with his younger sisters and his neices and nephews. He had a big heart and an idle smile that will never be forgotten.

Left to mourn: Common law spouse Ruby Gibbons Sr. Brothers: Abe (Laura) and Bruce (Ivy). Sisters: Alva (Henry), Josie (Harrison), Mary (Melvin), and Peggy (Roland). Sister-in-law: Jean. Brothers-in-law: Walter (Caroline) and John (Nancy), and a large circle of nieces, nephews, close friends and relatives.

COOMBS, LAVINIA GLADYS

September 23, 1947 - September 25, 2022

It is with great sadness that the family of Lavinia Gladys Coombs of Shoal Cove West announce her passing on Sunday, September 25, 2022, at Charles S. Curtis Memorial Hospital, St. Anthony, at the age of 75 years.

Leaving to mourn with fond and loving memories is her daughter Dulcie, son-in-law Curtis, grandchildren Breanna and Trey (her pride and joy), nephew Lorne, sisters: Vivian, Rowena (Cosmo), Elizabeth, Bessie, Belinda (Steven) and brothers Lambert (Iris) and Israel (Kathleen), friend Julie, homecare worker Joy and Dara, and a large circle of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.

Lavinia is predeceased by her parents Lambert and Eva Coombs, brothers Wilfred and Leslie, sisters Mamie and Olga.

COOMBS, CHESLEY WALLACE

Chesley Wallace Coombs was born in Newfoundland and Labrador, and Lived alongside his parents, siblings and friends for many years. At a young age, Chesley moved away form home to work in Alberta, where he enjoyed a life long career as a renowned welder and brother with the boiler makers union for over 15 years.

Chesley Passed away into peace on the 31st day of July, 2022 at the age of 64 years after a long and courageous battle with brain cancer. he was surrounded by loved ones whom will strive to honour his memory and life.

Chesley will always be lovingly remembered by; the mother of his children Margaret Lavery, Sons Bradley and David, Daughters Sandra and Lisa, brothers Percy Coombs, William Coombs and Clifford (Leona), sisters Vermeta J. Coombs (Winston), Matilda J. Coombs( Hiram), Nancy Ann Diamond (Ralph), Elizabeth House (Dean), Nephews and Nieces ; Medina Genge (Toma), Daris Coombs, Gavin Coombs, Edna Diamond, Curtis Diamond and Benjamin Coombs.

Chesley was Predeceased by his mother Elva Joyce Coombs and Father George William Coombs.

Visitation and a family service will be held at the Church of the Advent in Plum Point on the evening of the 11th of August, 2022, From which the funeral service will be held at 1pm on the 12th of August, 2022 with the Rev. Terry Coates officiating, Burial will follow in the Anglican Community Cemetery at Pond Cove Branch.

COOMBS, EFFIE

October 17, 1943 - March 17, 2022

Passed away peacefully at her residence in Shoal Cove West on March 17, 2022 at the age of 78.
Effie was born in Shoal Cove West to Leah and Jack on October 17, 1943. She was the best Mom, Sister, Aunt, and Friend to all.
She leaves to mourn her Son, Perry, her world as well as her sister Dulcie.
She is predeceased by her Mother, Leah; Father, Jack; Common-law Husband, Jake; Sisters, Dorcas, Emily, Burnidette; Brothers, Leander, Stewart, Stedman, and Gerald.
The family would like to thank her many friends who were there along her journey.

COOMBS, JOANNA ELIZABETH (JOANIE)

Sept. 21, 1941 - Jan. 11, 2022

Joanie passed away peacefully on January 11th 2022 at the Charles Curtis Memorial Hospital in St Anthony at the age of 80 years. Joanie was born in Plum Point and lived there all her life until she lost her home to a fire in 2019. She then moved to the Shirley's Haven personal Care Home in St Anthony.

Joanie will always be remembered by her family; her sisters Susan Chambers, Bertha Etheridge; her brothers Lawrence Coombs and Lorenzo (Mary) Coombs, and a large number of nieces and nephews and their families.

Joanie was predeceased by her parents Absalom and Florence (Bonnell) Coombs, her brother Harrison Coombs and her in-laws Clyde Chambers, Nellie Coombs, and Gordon Etheridge Sr.

A special thank you to the staff at the Shirley's Haven personal care home for their care while she lived there. It was deeply appreciated.

It is with great sadness that that the family of the late James Coombs of Plum Point announce his passing at the John M. Gray Center on May 26, 2021 at the age of 86 years old. Jim was born April 16th, 1935 in Plum Point and lived there all of his life. In his early years he worked in the woods. When he was 32 years old, he went to school and became an Auto Body Technician. He ran his own business Coombs’ Auto Body Shop until his retirement. After retirement he spent many hours in his garden. He loved socializing with his many friends and family. He also loved being a pop to his three grandchildren, spending time with them and encouraging them in everything they did. His family would like to thank the staff of the John M. Gray Center for their care and compassion. He will be greatly missed by his wife of 58 years Lillian (Gibbons of Current Island), children Eliza (Roy), Ben (Anita), grandsons Sidney (Chelsea) and Alex (Taylor) and granddaughter Sarah; brothers: Gerald (Maisie) and Henry. In laws Edmund (Mary Ann) Gibbons, Edith (Isaac) Dredge, Annie Gibbons, and Gladys Gibbons. As well he leaves behind a wide circle of family and friends and especially Rodney, Evelyn, Minnie, and Heather who were always a big part of his family. He is predeceased by his parents Benjamin and Minnie (Hughes) Coombs, in laws Steven and Myrtle (Chambers) Gibbons, brother Joseph Coombs, in laws Myrtle Coombs, Valma Coombs, Martin Gibbons and James Gibbons. COOMBS, GEORGE

George Coombs passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on March 4th, 2021 at the age of 88. His battle with serious medical issues over the last few years showed his determination courage and bravery to fight to stay with his family despite his pain. George was a hero in the eyes of his family and stayed strong until the end.

George leaves to mourn the love of his life Mamie Coombs. They were married for 63 years and had 4 children: Myrtle (John Claude), Walter (Jocelyn), Cindy and Brada (Bruce). George also leaves his grandchildren, Casey, Cindy, Jarrett (Natasha) and Braden. Great grandchildren: Dawson, Deja and a large circle of family and friends.

George is predeceased by his daughter, Cindy; his mom and dad Walter and Amelia Coombs; Brothers, Jake and John and sisters Matilda, Ruby, Myrtle and Caroline.

George will be greatly missed by all who were lucky to have met him with his strong and witty personality and the love he had for his family.

The family would like to extent a heartfelt thanks to the ER staff and Medics at SBIHC for their kindness and amazing care shown to George during his many visits and his last few days.

The viewing will be held at K M Fillatre’s Funeral Home St. Anthony and George will be laid to rest at St. Mary Anglican Cemetery in Black Duck Cove.

Ethel Coombs was born to Jacob and Muriel Applin of Shoal Cove West on May 7, 1949, and passed peacefully away on October 26, 2020 at the Curtis memorial hospital in St. Anthony nl. She had 11 siblings; Seven sisters, Lucy, Elma, Ivy, Sheila, Gertrude, Valerie and Peggy, Four Brothers, Gorden, George, Jacob, And Ross. Ethel was a very caring, tender hearted and loving woman devoted to her family. She was a great wife, Mother, Grandmother and Friend. She leaves to mourn: husband Robert Coombs, Daughter Veronica (Randy), Son Ford (Shawna), Granddaughter Hunter, Grandson Gaylen. She was predeceased by her dad Jacob, Mother Muriel, Sisters Lucy and Ivy, Brothers Gorden, George and Jacob, Her Father in Law Cecil Coombs and mother in law Vera Coombs.
