May 11, 1936 – November 30, 2018
Passed peacefully away surrounded by her loving family on November 30th at the age of 82. Dorothy Emma Anderson (nee Decker) was born in Lower Woods near Cook’s Harbour on May 11, 1936 to Garland and Dorcas Decker (nee Downer). She was one of nine children. On August 9, 1956 she married Gower Anderson of L’Anse Aux Meadows and together they raised six children and one grandchild. Dorothy opened the first grocery store in L’Anse Aux Meadows in 1956 which she operated for 30 years. Among her many accomplishments was her desire for education, so in 1992 she went back to school and completed her high school diploma. From Tupperware representative to volunteering with Parks Canada as a Viking, she showed her love for meeting new people. She spent countless hours berry picking and caring for her flower garden from which she lovingly shared her flowers with everyone. Her cabin, friends, and family were very dear to her heart. Her infectious smile was one of her greatest traits for which she will always be remembered. Dorothy leaves to mourn her daughters Bernice (George), Bonnie, Colleen (Eric); sons Gerald (Norma), Kevin (Donna), Kirby (Lisa); grandchildren Kristopher (Amanda), Tara, Kathryn (Eric), Elizabeth, Kyle and Meghan; sisters Myrtle, Bessie (Seymour); brothers-in-law Dorman (Rose), Maxwell (Gladys); sister-in-law Juanita Decker as well as a large circle of extended family and friends. She was predeceased by her parents Garland and Dorcas; brothers Reginald, Maxwell, Harold, Douglas & Lloyd; sister Margaret; sisters-in-law Ivy, Deborah, Frances & Helen; brothers-in-law Wilfred, Ross, Alfred & Job. Thank you to all the staff at the John M Gray Center for the incredible care and support they provided during her time at the home. Visitation will be held at the Kerry M. Fillatre’s Funeral Home from 2-4 and 7-9 on Saturday, December 1st. Flowers graciously accepted or donations can be made in her memory to a charity of one’s choice.
