CASEY, LAWRENCE JAMES (Lar)

December 1, 1931 - August 20, 2024

Lar passed peacefully away, surrounded by family, on August 20, 2024. He was 92 yrs old. He is now reunited with his wife of 55 years, Mary (née Byrne), who passed away on this past June 30th. He leaves to mourn his 5 children - Daphne (Jill Barron), Derek (Julie), Larry (Melissa Davidson), Paul (Jackie Butt), and Matthew (Stephanie Hibbs), his 7 grandchildren - Allie, Leah, Finn, Anna, Holly, Nathan, and Isabella, and 1 great-grandson Leo. He is also leaving behind his brother George, his in-laws, Theresa Byrne, Don Kearney, Margaret (Arthur Sturge), Marie Byrne, and Calvin Humphries, and his much loved nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents Stephen and Ellen Casey (nee Kenney), his beloved siblings William Casey, Bridget Lewis, Angela Power, and Margaret Hunt, and his in-laws Margaret and Elias Byrne, Rose Humphries, Sadie Meaney, Laura Kearney, and Gerald, Michael, and Vincent Byrne

Dad was a wonderful and gentle man. He always seemed content and was pretty easy-going. His smile was never far away. He was quiet most of the time. But then, when you got him talking, the stories would flow. Dad taught us, by his example, the importance of a good work ethic. He worked from dawn to dusk to provide for his family. We never went without anything we needed. He loved his family dearly - “I loves ye all”, he would say every time you talked to him. Children brought out his biggest smiles. His grandchildren and great-grandson held a special place in his heart.

The family would like to thank Dad’s caregiver, Lucy Byrne. Her incredible compassion and great care allowed him to remain at home as long as possible. When she came into the house, Dad’s face lit up and she got the big smiles too. The staff at Curtis Memorial Hospital took great care of Dad in his last few months. Your kindness will not be forgotten.

Visitation will take place from the Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church in Conche with the wake at 8:00 pm. The funeral mass will take place at 11:00 am on Friday, August 23, 2024 with Fr. Amir officiating. Interment to follow.

PENNEY, CHARLES JOHN

Charles John Penney

March 27th, 1963 – August 2nd, 2024

The family of John Penney are very sad to share the news of his passing on August 2nd, 2024.

John was born in St. Anthony, NL on March 27th, 1963. While he was raised and attended school in St. Anthony, John and his family spent summers at their cabin in Christmas Island, Cape Breton, NS for over 23 years. In between all the chores of farming and work around the cabin, John always spoke fondly of the fun times and adventures there, from swimming and beach fires to dances and gatherings with friends.

John had a strong work ethic and was never afraid to roll up his sleeves, or coveralls. He earned a trade in carpentry from St. Anthony Trade School. If you asked John though, he would say he started working in kindergarten when he would tag along with his father to airport. He worked with Penney’s Aircraft Services, a company started by his father in the 1960s, and always enjoyed chatting with other co-workers and people passing through on their travels. John also loved to be out on the water whether it was off somewhere in motor boat, steaming up to Makkovik, or out fishing for crab or cod.

Although there was always work to be done, John always made time for fun as well. Family and friends were important to John. He loved to have people come around whether it be at home, the cabin or up in his shed. His sense of adventure, kindness, humour, and caring-nature made him known and loved by many. John made friends easily wherever he went.

John was very proud to be Inuk, and loved any opportunity to travel to the north coast of Labrador. In 2019, John travelled to Nain with his mom Dora for event marking the 100th anniversary of the Spanish flu in Okak. A highlight of the trip for John was getting to see Black Island where his mother was born. Getting to experience this with his mom was something John felt privileged to be able to do.

With many fond and loving memories, John leaves to mourn his partner Khatija and long anticipated daughter (coming soon); mother Dora (nee Ford); sister Patti Penney, nephews Lyndon, Dylan, Matthew, great-nephews Duncan and Thomas, and great-niece Hannah; sister Carolyn (Craig) Compton and nephew Lucas; brother Robert (Helen) Penney, nephew Jacob and niece Eve; sister Christina (Lott) Ropson, nephew Jack and niece Emily; mother-in-law Audrey, father-in-law Tabi, and sister-in-law Yasmin; as well as a very large circle of family and friends.

John was predeceased by his father Gerald; grandparents Harold and Mary (nee Bird) Penney and, Julius and Rosina (nee Pamak) Ford.

John was a kind-hearted person who would help out anyone wherever he could; from helping someone to fix or build something, to making them smile and laugh. There was so much in life that John was looking forward to. Although he was taken from us too soon, John will live on through all of the stories and memories we have with him. As John would say when he’d raise his glass, “Cheers to many years of eternal happiness and good health, and if you have either or you’re in good shape, the rest is immaterial… I made that one up myself.”

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Nain TaKuaKautik Food Bank (takuakautik@gmail.com), the Orange Shirt Society (https://orangeshirtday.org/), or another indigenous organization.

Visitation will be held at the Funeral Home In St. Anthony form 2-4 pm and 7-8pm on Sunday August 11th 2024 with a family service being held at 8pm. The Funeral will be held form St. Anthony United Church at 11am on Monday August 12th, 2024 followed by burial at the Fishing Point United Cemetery, St. Anthony

CHAMBERS, IRENE

February 9, 1926 - July 16, 2024

It is with great sadness that the family of Irene Chambers announce the passing of their dear Mother on July 16, 2024 at the age of 98 years.

She will be greatly missed by her sons:  Ivan (Nancy), Stephen (Carmel):  Daughters: Jessie (Anthony), Marie (Pius), Beulah, Selma (Hiram), Eleven (11) grandchildren:  Randy (Joan), Tammy (Jason), Dwayne (Dale), Jamie (Sylvia), Ivan (Rossi), Kenneth (Xiao), Adam (Olivia), Robert (Lisa), Wendy (Barry), Ivan JR ( Candace), and Heather ( Jussi), Seventeen (17) great grandchildren and Five (5) great-great grandchildren.  Also left behind is a sizeable fur-baby family, as well as a large group of extended family and devoted friends.

Irene is predeceased by:  her husband Abraham Chambers, parents Jacob and Blanche Gould, sisters: Josie, Amelia, Shirley, Alma, Jane, Mary Anne, Hilda and Vivian; Brothers Roland and Earl.

Irene was born in Bear Cove and it was there that she married and raised her family.  After Abe’s death in 1990, she moved to Labrador City, a place she had visited many times previously and loved very much.  The last four months of her life were spent at the Ivy Durley Place.

She loved to be busy.  If she wasn’t quilting, she was knitting, making pickles or pies.   She was actually quite famous by numerous folks in Labrador for any and all of her talents.  She donated quilts for charity events, knitted mittens and socks for new immigrants and probably gave out thousands of knitted dishcloths.  Christmas saw her making as many as 25 pies to be delivered to various friends. Bingo was her favourite social event outside of the apartment, hockey ( most notably the Montreal Canadians) was her inside joy. Her favourite season was Hockey Season.

Throughout her life, Irene was very generous with her time and her talents, and was appreciative of anything and everything that people did for her.

Special thanks to the staff at Ivy Durley  for the amazing care she received during her short stay there. She was always full of praise for all the workers, and she loved the food!  She was happy there.  A special notice to her lovely friend and roommate Lucy LaVallee ( whom Mom referred to as “my lifesaver “). We would also like to thank the staff at the ICU at Charles S Curtis Memorial Hospital for their care during her short stay there.

Visitation at St Boniface Church in Bear Cove.
