MCLEAN, ROLAND

It is with a heavy heart that the family of Roland McLean announce his passing on November 7th, 2024 at the age of 71 years. Roland passed away peacefully at Curtis Memorial Hospital with his spouse and a large circle of his family at his side.

Roland was born and raised in Green Island Cove, he was an active member of his community. He spent his life on the water as a fisherman, he enjoyed life to the fullest. In the last few years he battled ALS. He took the good days with the bad, with lot of support, he fought this battle to the end.

Roland leaves to mourn, with fond memories: His lifelong partner of 35 years Joyce Mitchelmore; 6 Sisters: Sybil, Hazareth (George), Louisa, Irene (Harold), Shirley (Dylan), Rosie (Colby); His 3 brothers: Leslie (Penny), Lambert (Helen), Primus (Pearl); Brothers-in-law: Michael Gibbons and John Macey; Nieces, Nephews and an Extended Circle of Family and Dear Friends.

Roland was Predeceased by: his parents Raymond and Aurelia McLean; 2 Sisters: Sarah Gibbons and Augustine Macey; Brothers-in-law: Desmond Macarthur and Pat Rumbolt.

We would like to extend our gratitude and appreciation to Kerry M. Fillatre Funeral home, Rev. Canon Vernon Short, Loomis Way, as well as the staff at the Curtis Memorial Hospital for their care and compassion during his hospital stay. We would also like to thank the Flower’s Cove Health Centre for their continuous care over the past few months. A special thank you goes out to Nurse Practitioner Madonna Coates and Home care nurse Benay Sinnicks, We are Forever Grateful.

Visitation is being held at St. Andrew’s Church in Lower Cove on Saturday and Sunday (Nov 9th and 10th). The family service will be held at 9pm on Sunday, followed by the funeral service on Monday Nov. 11th, 2024 at 11am. Cremation will follow the service with burial at a later date.

GIBBONS, GLADYS MAY

Gladys (Chambers) Gibbons

September 15, 1926 - January 23, 2023

It is with great sadness that the family of Gladys (Chambers) Gibbons announced her peaceful passing on January 23, 2023, at the age of 96, at the Rufus Guinchard Health Center in Port Saunders.

Leaving to mourn with lots of great memories are her children, Edith (Leslie) Toope, Bill (Daisy) Gibbons, Lesley Hillier, Virginia (Jim) Bradford, Vony ( Enos) Langdon, Ivy Toope, and Roy (Eliza) Gibbons.

Her grandchildren Gladys, Loretta, Melanie, Gina, Robert, James, Jessica, Ian, Devon, Jamie, Louis, Lynette, and Alex, and their partners.

Her great grandchildren Ashton, Aidan, Brooke, Luke, Hannah, Kate, Henry, Sophia, Billie, Kingstyn, Finley, and Jade and her sister-in-law Virginia Gibbons, as well as a large number of special nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.

She was predeceased by her parents, Jonathan and Mary Chambers, her husband Roy Sr., her children Louis and Dorcas, her grandson Stefan Gibbons, her son-in-law Graydon Toope, and her grandson- in- law Gary Doyle, as well as all her brothers and sisters.

Gladys grew up in Blue Cove and on February 3, 1952 she married Roy Gibbons and moved to St. Genevieve Bay where they raised their family until 1976, when they moved to Plum Point. Gladys had a large extended family whom she loved to have visits with and to chat with on the telephone and kept in touch with them all. She certainly enjoyed her calls and visits from everyone. She loved hearing about her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She will be missed by all her family and friends.

The family would like to send a big thank you to the staff at the Ivy Durley Place in Flower’s Cove where she lived for 13 years. She made many friends there with the other residents and the staff. We cannot thank them enough for the great care they gave her while she was there. We would also like to thank the staff in Long Term Care at the Rufus Guinchard Hospital in Port Saunders for the special care they gave our mom during her time there.

Family service will take place on Thursday, January 26 at 8pm and the funeral service will be on Friday, January 27 at 11am form the church of the advent in Plum Point with Rev. Terry Coates Officiating

STRYDE, ALFRED JAMES

Alfred James Stryde was born to Aubrey and Isabella Stryde of Bridgeport on Dec. 23rd of 1940. On August 16th of 1967 he Married the love of his life Elizabeth Hill of Cooks Harbour. They were blessed with the birth of three sons, Gordon, Darren and Shawn. Elizabeth and Alfred also raised Cathy Tucker for a number of years. He loved to read and listen to church on Sunday. He will be sadly missed by his sons Darren (Petrina) Stryde, and Shawn (Carol) Stryde and his three treasures ; Krista, Nathan and Alex. His sister Jean Boyd, Glady (Charles) Emberley, Louise Stryde, Thelma (Terry) Wheeler, Eileen (John) Philpot and his brother Harvey (Betty) Stryde. His sister in law Loretta Stryde, Marg Rose, Betty Hill and Eliza Hill. Alfred was predeceased by his wife Elizabeth Stryde, Son Gordon, Parents Aubrey and Isabella Stryde, his sister Maisie Rideout; brothers Ivan and Eric Stryde; and brother-in-law Gilbert Boyd and will be missed by his buddies Grenfell Blake, Everton Patey, Ronald Pilgrim and Many other family members and friends. Visitation to be held at the Funeral home in St. Anthony from 2-4 pm on Saturday October 23rd and 2-4pm on Sunday, October 24th, after which the funeral service will take place at 2:00pm on the 25th day of October, 2021, with Majors Henry and Beatrice Bingle officiating. it is with deepest sadness that the family of the late Virtue Parrill of Pines Cove announce her passing on July 18th, 2021 at the strait of Belle Isle Health Center in Flowers Cove, NL at the age of 78 years. She will be sadly missed by her children Clayton and Cedric (Cara); Grandchildren Cody, Dallas (Haley), Christian (Jessica), Cadie; Great Grandchildren Jake and Tommy; Siblings Nicholas, Olive, Chris (Shirley), Thamsie (Wallace), Hughie (Marie), Fred (Melvina), Maggie (Edmund), Patsy (Windsor), Barry (Ruby) and Susie (Scott), as well as her nieces, Nephews, extended family, Friends and her “Special Mothers” at the Ivy Durley place. Virtue was predeceased by her husband George Parrill, her parents Uriah and Mary Elizabeth Hughes, her sisters; Nancy, Velma, Dorothy and Olga, brother in law David Noseworthy and Sister in law Marjorie Hughes.

The family would like to send special thanks to the staff at the Ivy Durley Place and to her sisters Maggie Hughes, Patsy Hughes and Susie Macey for their tremendous kindness and exceptional care of mom when we couldn’t be home.

September 18, 1954 – September 11, 2020 It is with heavy hearts that the family of the late Ruby Dredge announce her passing on Friday, September 11, 2020 at the Health Science Center in St. John’s at the age of 65 years. The one thing Ruby loved more than anything in the world was her family. She did her best to take care of them. Ruby was a very strong, quiet, gentle woman with a great sense of humor. She was an active member on numerous committees and was dedicated to representing her own community along with neighbouring communities. Although she struggled with her illness the past seven months, she would never complain and she accepted what each day brought to her with a positive attitude. She will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved her, especially her husband, Jacob; Sons, Tyson (Josephine), Trevor (Christa); Grandson, Reed; Siblings, Matthew, Leslie; Nieces and Nephews; Sister-in-law’s, Hazel, Martha Jane, Elizabeth; Brother-in-law’s, Isaac (Edith), Edward (Blanche); Aunts, Uncles, and Cousins. She was predeceased by her son, Jacob Gregory; her granddaughter Cierra; and her parents, Samuel and Amy Randell. The family extends their heartfelt thanks and appreciation for all the support they have received throughout Ruby’s illness. They are especially thankful for the care she received from the staff at the Curtis Memorial Hospital in St. Anthony and the staff at the Health Science Center in St. Johns. Viewing will take place on Wednesday, September 16, 2020 from 12:00 pm to 1:30 pm at St. Mary’s Anglican Church in Black Duck Cove, NL. The funeral will begin at 2:00 pm with Rev. John McGonigle officiating. Interment will take place in the United Cemetery in Black Duck Cove, following the service. HANCOCK, WILLIS RAYFIELD

Willis Rayfield Hancock.

Willis was born on February 3, 1933 to Gideon and Grace Hancock.
Brother Willis met the love of his life, - Dulcie Blanche Hodge and was married on November 11, 1952 at Roddickton.  They were blessed with six children: Grant, Cora, Randy, Diane, Morgan, and Billy.  After giving his heart to the Lord in 1957 , he faithfully attended Church with his family. Bro. Willis was known for giving an inspiring testimony which vividly showed his excitement  of been saved. Willis was a well-respected man in this community and surrounding communities. He worked with the department of Highways foe 30 years.  He was a very hard worker who worked many long hours at his company - Canada Bay Construction for 32 years.  After he retired from the company, he loved to go for a ride and visit the jobs sites of his employees just to see how things were going and have a chat. In July of 2007 he suffered a stroke that left him somewhat immobile but still he would attend Church whenever he could.  He was admitted to the Curtis Memorial Hospital on January 4, 2017 then on December 20, 2018  he moved to the John Grey Center. Recently  he became ill and was hospitalized until Monday August 10,  2020 around 3 am when he took his heavenly flight to meet his Lord and Master whom he served faithfully for many years. He was predeceased by his Parents – Gideon & Grace Hancock: Wife - Dulcie: Son – Morgan.

MITCHELMORE, CURTIS LANCELOT

September 15, 1933 – March 29, 2020

Curtis passed away peacefully on March 29, 2020, in his home surrounded by his children, grandchildren and fur baby. Curtis was born in 1933 in Green Island Cove, Newfoundland to Austin and Eliza Mitchelmore.  Curtis married Naomi Mugford in 1954; together, they had 3 children and they created a loving home for their children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and fur baby. He will be remembered for his work ethic and sense of humor. He leaves behind his loving Wife Naomi; children Delilah (Harold) Rose, Rebecca ( late Harvey) Mitchelmore, Wade Sr (Sarah) Mitchelmore; grandchildren Kim (Trent), Ken (Rosie), Della (Marc), Wade Jr (Marissa); great-grandchildren Trisha, Tia, Kendra, AJ, Kira, Karley, Weston and William; his best friend his fur baby, Charlee; sisters Cora Mitchelmore, Nellie (Norman) Parrill and Eliza ( late John) Parrill; and sister-in-law Marina (Albert) Applin  . He will be missed by them all. The family extends its deepest gratitude to his personal care workers Carmel, Jenette, Janet and Cindy who provided him with the best care and compassion in his last few years. We also thank the nurses, doctors and paramedics at the Strait of Belle Isle Healthcare center who helped care for and provide us with guidance during his final weeks so he was able to stay at home with his family and friends.  As per Curtis’ request cremation has been entrusted to K. M. Fillatre Funeral Home in St. Anthony. Due to the Public Health Advisory of COVID-19 no visitation or ceremony will take place at this time. A visitation and celebration of his life will take place at a later date. 

BROWN, BARBARA

Barbara Brown (nee Samson), Brig Bay, NL, October 14th, 1941 – February 3rd, 2020 Passed peacefully away in the arms of the Lord on February 3rd, 2020, at the Rufus Guinchard Health Centre at the age of 78. She leaves with fond memories her daughter, Diane, son in-law Douglas, granddaughter Brittany (Dale Herter), step-daughter Christine (Wilson Pickett), sister Elsie, sister in laws Eileen (Cecil Dominaux), Jessie, Bernice, aunt Ursula, and special nieces, Marilyn and Linda. She is predeceased by her husband Wilson, parents Peter and Bessie, sister Marina and brothers: Thomas, Hiram, Conrad, and Kevin, brother in-law Grant, sister-in laws Emma and Effie. Barbara dearly loved her family, from Sundays spent at her parents’ house with her siblings, to extended vacations with her daughter and granddaughter in Ontario. As a true Newfoundlander, she loved a good game of cards and cooking her Sunday’s dinner. She will always be remembered for her caring heart and sense of humour. She is now resting peacefully and will forever be in our hearts. FILLIER - HOPKINS, MELVINA GLADYS JUILA

Passed peacefully away on Tuesday, June 6th 2017 at Curtis Memorial Hospital in St. Anthony, NL at 73 years of age.

She is predeceased by Husbands Stanley Fillier and Roy Hopkins, Parents Chesley and Flossie Cassell, Brother’s Harrison and David Cassell.

Left to mourn her passing with fond and loving memories are her Children; Marlene (Wayne), Derrick (Bonnie), Jackie (Dennis), Debbie (Dean), Pauline (Joshua), and Connie (Jason), eleven Grand Children, four Great Grand Children, two Sisters, two Brother’s, Nieces, Nephews, and a large circle of Family and Friends.

Passed away into peace at her home in St. Lunaire-Griquet on the 18th of January 2016, Mrs. Mable Patey, in her 81st year. Left to mourn her loss are her son Mervin Chambers, Daughter Wavey Chambers, 4 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren, 2 brother and 3 sisters. in her life Mabel see the passing of her parents Ida and Lorenzo Patey her son Melvin Chambers, Sister Beatrice Pilgrim, and brothers Melvin and Lewis. visitation was held at the Pentecostal Church in St. Lunarie-Griquet, from which the funeral service took place at 2:00pm on the 21st of January with Pastor Wayne Baker Officiating. burial followed in the Church Cemetery.
