BLAKE, EVERETT

Passed away December 26th, 2017 from the Charles S. Curtis Memorial Hospital in St. Anthony at the age of 91 years. According to the Government, Everett was born in Spillard’s Cove (now called Straitsview) on September 22nd, 1926. However, it is more likely that he had been born a year earlier (in 1925). The Government decision was based on Census information, because birth records had been lost- perhaps because of fire. This decision was made when Everett was well on in life, as is often the case when birth records have been lost. Everett set his hand to whatever work was available. He fished, hunted, and trapped. During the winter, he was busy knitting and mending cod traps. He became a good carpenter and built a number of schools and many homes. On Sundays, he walked down to the Church and rang the bell (which meant that all the children went off to Sunday school). It was when Everett had went to Raleigh to fish that he met Jessie Bessey. The two celebrated 65 years of marriage together. They grew a new branch of the Blake family tree which now includes nearly four dozen descendants. He leaves to mourn his wife, Jessie Blake; Sons, Dennis (Donna), Garry (Betsy), Cyril, and Hedley; Daughters, Cindy (Jim), Dale, and Velma (Barry); Brother Wilson; Sister-in-law Marie (Widow of Brother Garfield) as well as 14 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren, and a large circle of extended family and friends. Everett was predeceased by his parents, James and Martha Blake; Brothers, Isaac, Ruben, Garfield, and Harrison as well as Sisters, Lucy, Mary Evelyn, and Rosie. Visitation was held from the United Church in Raleigh from where the funeral service was held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, December 30th, 2017 with Rev. Gus Pendleton officiating. Interment followed. Funeral arrangements entrusted to Kerry M. Fillatre’s Funeral Home, St. Anthony and Roddickton, Lee Nippard Funeral Director.

TAYLOR, PHYLLIS LEONA

It is with great sadness that the family of Phyllis Taylor announces her passing on November 24, at the Charles Curtis Memorial Hospital. Isaiah and Ada Taylor, of Ship Cove were delighted when Phyllis was born into their family. Phyllis loved growing up in Ship Cove, and she had wonderful memories of Lance aux Souash and Elbone. When she married David, in 1970, she shared those joys with him. After 10 years of waiting, Phyllis and Dave began to add to their family. Then she was also able to teach them the wonders of our beautiful hills and shores. Phyllis had many loves beyond exploring nature. She was skilled in a number of crafts, loved to sew and quilt. Phyllis loved music and was a gifted singer as well as organist. She was also an avid reader. Phyllis went back to school as an adult, and was pleased to graduate from CONA. Underneath all of her interests, Phyllis was devoted to Jesus. She was active in the UCW, was the Sunday School Superintendent and shared her joy in music with both Church and SundaySchool. Her love of children and willingness to serve her community also led Phyllis to lead the Girl Guides. She touched many, many lives. Beyond all of this, her crowning achievement was the love she showered on David and their three daughters and grandson. She leaves behind her beloved husband David, her three daughters Melanie, Jeanette and Sue Anne, her Grandson Jordan, Her Sisters Vina, Manlyn, and Dale, Brother Stafford. She was predeceased by her Mother (Ada), Father (Isaiah) and Brother (Winston). The Funeral service will be held on Friday December 1st, 2017 at 2:00pm from the Raleigh United Church with Rev. Gus Pendleton officiating. Inurnment will take place after the service at the church cemetery. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Kerry M.
