MAY, RICHARD SIDNEY MORGAN

December 11, 1967 - April 22, 2023

It is with great sadness that the family of Richard Sidney Morgan May announce his passing at his home in Bird Cove on Saturday, April 22, 2023 at the age of 55 years. Richard was born in Roddickton, NL on December 11, 1967. 

He graduated from Evely Collegiate High, after a short stint in the Canadian Arm Forces (ROTP) he went on to Memorial University where he graduated with a B. Commerce (Accounting) Degree. He worked with Doane Raymond, Maurice Simmonds Services, Doyle Fisheries and lastly and for most of his career, Nortip Development Corporation. For a period of time he served as mayor of Bird Cove and was involved in various committees and ventures that promoted the economy and culture of the Great Northern Peninsula, which he dearly loved. 

Richard loved spending time with family and friends, especially his nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. They will always remember him saying “tickle, tickle” as he tickled them. Richard enjoyed reading, fishing, hunting, boating and was a loyal Montreal Canadians hockey fan, because it was his father’s team. He was a kind, devoted and loving son, brother, uncle and friend. His generosity had no limit. He gave above and beyond what would be expected by any one person.  

Left to mourn with fond and loving memories is his loving mother, Ursula, siblings Pauline Bartlett (Maurice) St. Anthony, NL; Paul May (Betty) Humber Valley Resort, NL;  Lynn Hunt (Randy) Port au Port, NL;  Eugene May (Madonna) Pasadena, NL; and Todd May (Cindy) St. Thomas, ON. Nieces and nephews Tennelle (Noland); Michael (Alishia); Charmayne (David); Laura (Andrew); Beverley (Joshua); Jennifer (Darren); Randall (Keshia); Andrew (Kayci) Hannah; also Jessica; Matt (Melissa) and Erin (Brandon). Grandnieces and grandnephews; Ross James, Emma, Claire, Roman, Audrey, Eli, Ivy, Ezra; Caleb, Averie, Xavier, Xomara, & Ben.

He was predeceased by his father Carl May; grandparents, Morgan and Lucy May and George and Ena Hopkins; grandnephew Ryan Blake and by other extended family members. Also loved by Beverley Ereaut and many other family and friends.

A private visitation will be held at the Apostolic faith church in roddickton Saturday morning followed by the public funeral at 2pm.

HANCOCK, FREDERICK CLYDE

July 18, 1931 - November 7, 2022

Fred Clyde Hancock was born on July 18th, 1931, the first child of 15 born to Gideon and Grace Hancock. Born into that family were brothers: Willis, Stanley, Frank, Ford, Don, Dennis, Kirby and Bradley. Sisters Winnie, Yvonne, Lillian, Nancy, Ruby, Jean and Barbara. He married the love of his life, Marie Decker, on June 22, 1953, and lived in Roddickton and raised 6 children: Sandra, Debbie, Mark (Morris), Greg, David & Gayle.

He gave his heart to the Lord in 1958 and from then on, he devoted his life to the Lord and his church family. He spent many years assisting as Pastor. Fred worked with the Department of Highways most of his life and retired at the age of 57. Him and Marie enjoyed his retirement years. They built a cabin at Coles Pond and spent many memorable years there until he felt it was too much to maintain. After he sold his home, he moved to the Apostolic Faith cottage which they really enjoyed. His church family was very important to him.

His wife Marie was called to her heavenly home on February 16, 2022. He became very lonely after her passing and his daily wish and prayer was to join her at her heavenly home. He died peacefully surrounded by family on November 7, 2022.

Visitation is being held at the Apostolic Faith Church in Roddickton on Tuesday November 8th for family form 2pm to 4pm and public form 7pm to 9pm, Wednesday for family form 2pm to 4pm and public form 7pm to 9pm. The Celebration of Life Service will be held at form the Church at 2pm on Thursday November 10, 2022 with Pastor Michael Ivnay officiating, burial will follow in the church cemetery.

HANCOCK, MARIE BETTY

June 22, 1934 - February 16, 2022

Betty, Marie Hancock was born on June 22nd, 1934 to Thomas and Elsie Decker of Roddickton, NL. Also born into that family were her five sisters: Shirley, Maunda, Sybil, Joyce, and Beverly also three brothers Gordon, Donald and Ricky.

Marie started teaching at the age of eighteen years. She then met and married the love of her life, Fred Hancock on June 22, 1953. She taught school until she started her family and then took on her most important role, being a mother to her six children: Sandra, Debbie, Mark, Greg, David & Gayle.

In addition to raising a family she operated a small grocery store. Upon retiring from her store, she went to work with her good friend Grace Brophy at her store.

Her Church family was very important to her. She gave her heart to the Lord in 1958. From then on she devoted her life to the Lord and her church family. She was faithful to attend Church, Sunday school, Youth meetings, Ladies group and any other Church functions.

On February 16, 2022, she was called away to receive her Heavenly reward.

Passed away January 3, 2019 at the Charles S. Curtis Memorial Hospital in St. Anthony at the age of 62. MAY, CARL

September 14, 1937 - December 4, 2018

It is with great sadness that the family of Carl May announce his passing at Western Memorial Regional Hospital on Tuesday morning, December 4, 2018 at the age of 81 years. Carl was born in Point Rosie, Fortune Bay, NL on September 14, 1937.  He met Ursula Hopkins from Roddickton in St. John’s and they were married at Botwood, NL on November 11, 1960.  Carl loved spending time with family and friends.  He enjoyed camping, fishing, hunting, snowmobiling, berry picking, boating and was a loyal Montreal Canadiens fan.  He was a kind, devoted and loving husband, father, brother, uncle, grandfather, great grandfather and friend.  Left to mourn with fond and loving memories is his loving wife, Ursula of 58 years, children Pauline Bartlett (Maurice) St. Anthony, NL; Paul May (Betty) Humber Valley Resort, NL; Lynn Hunt (Randy) Port au Port, NL; Eugene May (Madonna) Pasadena, NL; Richard May Bird Cove, NL; and Todd May (Cindy) St. Thomas, ON.  Grandchildren Tennelle (Noland); Michael; Charmayne (David); Laura (Andrew); Beverley; Jennifer (Darren); Randall (Keshia); Andrew; Hannah; Matt and Erin.  Great Grandchildren; Ross James; Emma; Claire and Roman; his brother Sidney May (Lynn), New Minas, NS and sister Joyce Snow (Tony) Wing’s Point, NL.  Predeceased by his parents, Morgan and Lucy May; his sister Emily; his brothers Winston, Morgan, Eugene and Harvey; and great grandson Ryan. Passed away October 21, 2018 at White Bay Central Health Centre in Roddickton at the age of 87 years. She leaves to mourn with fond and loving memories her Son, Raymond (Valda) Hancock; Daughters, Joan (Lloyd) Pilgrim, Mona (Tobias) Patey; Sisters, Beatrice Wilcox, Maureen Hancock; 5 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren, 1 great-greatgrandchild, and a large circle of other relatives and friends. Isabella was predeceased by her husband, Edward Hopkins, and her Parents, Reuben and Harriet Hopkins. KENNEDY, JOHN

Passed away August 7th, 2018 at the age of 89 years. John Kennedy was born in Flowers Cove, NL on February 25th, 1929. John was the son of Uncle Mike (Nicholas) and Mary Ann Kennedy (Young). John (Jack as he was lovingly known) was placed in the Grenfell Orphanage in St. Anthony at the age of 7 years old where he was raised and educated until he was 17 years of age. Upon leaving the Orphanage he travelled by dog sled team to Main Brook where he was employed by Bowaters as a Cookee initially but was later hired as a lumberjack. He moved to Roddickton where he continued his career as a woodsman. Uncle Mike, John’s father was residing in Roddickton at that time and was operating a general store. Shortly after moving to Roddickton he met the love of his life Meta Cassell. They were married February 28th, 1952. He set up his own business John Kennedy & Sons for which he was the owner & operator for 30 years. Together with his loving wife they raised a family of 8 children.  After closing his business John & Meta moved to Ontario where he worked in the logging industry for ten years. Upon retiring they moved back to Roddickton where they lived a very contented, loving and happy life together until the morning of August 7th, 2018. John loved and served the Lord for the majority of his life. He had an ear for music and sang and played the violin as part of the Apostolic Faith Mission in Roddickton for many years. He had a heart for others and everyone he met was a friend. He opened his home and his heart to everyone. He judged no one and lived only to serve others. When you saw him, he would greet you with his smile and a wave of his hand. John was a brilliant man with an avid love of reading. He was a hard-working man who loved his family dearly. John passed peacefully away into the presence of the Lord with his wife and some members of his large family by his side. He leaves to mourn his loving wife Meta and 7 of their children. 24 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild.  He leaves behind a legacy of music, faith, love and hope. He is predeceased by his parents, his daughter Marjorie and great-grandson Nicholas. Passed away at the White Bay Health Centre in Roddickton on July 25, 2016 at the age of 73 years. Passed away on June 30, 2016 at the age of 70 years.
