It is with great sadness that the family of Mrs. Catherine (Kitty) Parrill announce her passing on the 29th day of March 2023 at the John M. Gray Center In St. Anthony NL. Kitty is Forever Loved and Remembered by her Children: Bert (Dale) & Arlene (Elmer), Grandchildren: Robin (Chuck) & Dana (Adam) Great-Grandchildren: Hunter, Leah, & Noah Brothers: Clyde (June), Don (Cicely), & Harold Sisters-In-Law: Esther, Hazel, Mary, & Eliza Brothers-In-Law: Douglas, & Ivany as well as a large circle of Nieces, Nephews, Extended Family Members, & Friends. Visitation was held at the St. Andrew’s Anglican church in Lower Cove form March 31st through to the funeral service at 11am on Saturday April 1st with Rev. Vernon Short officiating. HUGHES, GIDEON

It is with great sadness that the family of Gideon Hughes announce his passing on the 20th day of March, 2023 at the Charles S. Curtis Memorial Hospital in St. Anthony in his 73rd year. Left to mourn his passing with heavy hearts are his wife Emily, God Son Kent, Danielle, Jaden and Logan ; his brothers Wilson, Lloyd (Maisie), Stewart (Yvonne), Wayne, Lewis (Delilah), Marvin (Patsy) ; His Sisters Daisy and Rosie ; his in-laws Lawrence (Jean), Eric, Sadie, Norman (Helen), Gorvin (Sarah), Garland (Priscilla), Selby (Lorraine), Wade, Brian (Wanda), Roland, Peter and Velma. Gideon was predeceased by his parents Cecil and Celia, his sister Elvia and in-laws Enos, Harvey, Yvonne, Father in law Selby and Mother in law Mary, Currie, Cassie, Rosie, Winnie, Osbourne, Henry, Whyman, Robert and May.
Visitation will be held at the St. Andrews Anglican Church in Lower Cove beginning Wednesday (March 22nd) evening and continuing through to the family service at 8pm on Thursday (March 23rd) with the funeral service being held at 11am on Friday March 24th with Rev. HUGHES, CALVIN

August 3, 1947 - February 24, 2023

It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Calvin Hughes on February 24th, 2023 after a short battle with cancer at James Patton Memorial Hospital in Gander surrounded by his loving family.

Calvin was born to Henry and Isabella Hughes in Green Island Brook on August 3, 1947. He married the love of his life, Donna Applin on December 28, 1971. He was a devoted dad to 4 children; Sherman, Rocky, Tammy, and Eliza whom he loved deeply to the very end.

Calvin lived in Green Island Brook until 1996 when he moved to Goose Bay where he met some of the most special friends and coworkers that he deeply cared for. It is while he was in Goose Bay that the pride and joy of his life, Shikara was born. Shikara was certainly “Pop’s girl” who could do no wrong. Right to the very end she held her pops hand.

Left to mourn with loving memories, his wife of 51 years, Donna; Children: Sherman (Kaye), Rocky (Kim), Tammy (Scott), Eliza (Shane), and Shikara (Kyle); Grandchildren: Jamie Leigh, Julia, Irelyn, Jadea, Tucker, Paul, Jack, Jayden, and Chloe; Siblings: Nathanial, Viola (Albert), Wilfred (Elaine), Wilga (Amy), Ronald (Millie), Millie (Chesley), Eileen (Donald), Lorraine (Selby), Harvey (Julie), Vina (Jimmy), and Maisie (Lloyd). He will be greatly missed by a large circle of nieces, nephews and friends

Calvin is predeceased by his Parents, Henry and Isabella Hughes; Sister, Rosie Parrill; Special brother-in-law, Ronald Campbell; in-laws, William (Bill) and Eliza Applin.

Visitation to take place from St. Andrew’s Anglican Church in Lower Cove beginning the evening of Sunday, February 26th, 2023. Visitation will continue Monday February 27, 2023 with the family service taking place Monday evening. The funeral service will take place on Tuesday, February 28, 2023 at 2:00 pm with Rev. Vernon Short officiating. Interment to follow in Green Island Brook.

MITCHELMORE, ALMA (NEE GOULD)

December 14, 1934 - December 22, 2021

Passed away peacefully on December 22, 2021 at The Agnes Pratt Home in St. John’s, NL at the age of eighty-seven (87).

Alma was born in Bear Cove, NL on December 14, 1934, the daughter of Stephen and Effie Gould. She raised her family in Green Island Cove, NL. She was a religious person, a proud family woman, a great homemaker, and a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was kind and affectionate to everyone.

Alma will always be remembered by her daughter Yvonne (Frank); sons Bob (Fern), Garfield (Pam), Rick, Albert (Cathy); grandchildren: Louise, Christa, and David (Yvonne); Paul, Adam, and Kelly (Bob); Brad (Garfield); Ryan, Kyle, and Lucas (Albert); great-grandchildren Haley (Louise), Blake and Callie (Christa), Emma (David), Eve (Paul), Molly and Mary (Adam); sisters Bridgette Gould (late Isaac), Marie Mitchelmore (George), Mary Dredge (late Curtis), Jane Genge (Abraham); brothers Clyde Gould (Ethel), Austin Gould (Ivy).

Alma is predeceased by her husband Garfield, her son David, parents Stephen and Effie Gould, sisters Gloria Gould, Georgina Genge (late Daniel), Ivy Gould (Cyril).

A special thank-you goes out to the wonderful staff and security at The Agnes Pratt Home. Their compassionate care and consideration were greatly appreciated and will not be forgotten.

Private visitation to take place from St. Andrews Anglican Church in Lower Cove on Tuesday, December 28, 2021 from 2-4pm and 7-9 pm. it is with deepest sadness that the family of the late Virtue Parrill of Pines Cove announce her passing on July 18th, 2021 at the strait of Belle Isle Health Center in Flowers Cove, NL at the age of 78 years. She will be sadly missed by her children Clayton and Cedric (Cara); Grandchildren Cody, Dallas (Haley), Christian (Jessica), Cadie; Great Grandchildren Jake and Tommy; Siblings Nicholas, Olive, Chris (Shirley), Thamsie (Wallace), Hughie (Marie), Fred (Melvina), Maggie (Edmund), Patsy (Windsor), Barry (Ruby) and Susie (Scott), as well as her nieces, Nephews, extended family, Friends and her “Special Mothers” at the Ivy Durley place. Virtue was predeceased by her husband George Parrill, her parents Uriah and Mary Elizabeth Hughes, her sisters; Nancy, Velma, Dorothy and Olga, brother in law David Noseworthy and Sister in law Marjorie Hughes.

The family would like to send special thanks to the staff at the Ivy Durley Place and to her sisters Maggie Hughes, Patsy Hughes and Susie Macey for their tremendous kindness and exceptional care of mom when we couldn’t be home.

Visitation will be held at the St. Andrews Parish in Lover Cove on Tuesday July 20th between 8 and 10pm and Wednesday, July 21st between 10am and 12 noon followed by her celebration of life at 2pm with Revered Deacon Vernon Short Officiating. Passed away into peace on the 19th day of January, 2021 Mrs. Marjorie Hughes of Green Island Brook, in her 81st year. by her side as she passed was her loving husband of 52 years Nicholas Hughes, also left to mourn her passing are Daughter/Niece Nancy (Hank), granddaughters Chloe and Sara, Sister Hazel (Late Walter Williams), Dulcie (Late William Applin), Beulah (Bruce Coates), Her Brothers Stewart (Juanita), Wallace (Thamsie), Wilson (Violet). Brother in laws Christopher (Shirley), Hughie (Marie), Fred (Melvina), Barry (Ruby), Sisters in Law Virtue (Late George Parrill), Olive (The late David Noseworthy), Thamsie (Wallace Parrill), Maggie (Edmund Hughes), Patsy (Winsor Hughes), and Susie (Scott Macey). Marjorie was predeceased by her parents Albert and Laura Parrill, mother and father in law Uriah and Mary Elizabeth Hughes, brothers Gordon , Cecil and John and sisters Evelyn and Olga. The Memorial Service and visitation took place at the St. Andrews Anglican Church in Lower Cove on Friday January 22, 2021 With Rev. Deacon Vernon Short Officiating. Burial followed the service in the Green Island Brook Anglican Cemetery. Funeral arrangements were provided by Kerry M. Fillatres Funeral Home, St. Anthony and Roddickton, Lee Nippard Funeral Director.

The Family would like to especially thank the Nurses and the Staff at The Charles S. Curtis Memorial Hospital for treatment, care and concern shown to them during the tough times leading up to Marjorie’s Passing, your kindness will not be forgotten.

SMITH, SCOTT

SMITH  SCOTT  -  At his residence in St Andrews, peacefully passed away, in the presence of his family, close friends and special grand-cat, Theodore Roosevelt. Scott Smith, husband of Marie (Beaufield) Smith, was born in St. Anthony NL, the son of the late John & Anna (Dawe) Smith. Scott worked as the Director of Human Resources with Grenfell Regional Health Services in St Anthony until he retired in 2005. Upon retiring he bought a house in St Andrews, and he divided his time between NL and NB, allowing him to spend equal time with his girls. Surviving in addition to his wife, Marie, are his three daughters Lee Smith-Powell (Frank) of St. Andrews, NB, Lynn Rumbolt (Shawn) of St. Anthony, NL, and Krista Armstrong (Mike Goodyear) of Calgary, AB; three granddaughters; Hannah Rumbolt, Emma Rumbolt, and Erika Powell, step father, John Shenk  of Lancaster, Penn, U.S.A., many relatives and friends. Scott was blessed to have had his brother in law, Guy Beaufield, and sister in law, Juanita Beaufield, whom he referred to as an angel, move in and help care for him over the past four months. Their love and devotion allowed Scott to remain at home during his illness. Scott was predeceased by his brother, Perry Johnson, and his biological mother, Dorothy Shenk. Thank you to Archdeacon John Matheson, for the many prayers and words of comfort and thank you to Theresa McLeod, RN, for the exceptional care, kindness and compassion. By Scott’s request cremation will take place. There will be no service at this time. His family will take him to his place of rest to be buried with his parents, John and Anna, in the Anglican Church Cemetery in Raleigh, NL, this summer.
