SAUNDERS, RITA MAY (Nee Earle)

Celebrating the life of Rita May (Earle)(Hussey) Saunders.

September 11th, 1932 - February 17, 2025.

Aged 92 years.

Rita was born to parents William and Alice Earle of St. Lunaire- Griquet. She was one of 11 children born to them. Rita married Sidney Hussey of St. Lunaire on the 7th day of January, 1949. Together they brought 14 precious children into the world.

Rita is survived by her children; Pansy (Clyde), Roy (Lucy), Verna (Rod), Blanche (Al), Bruce, Lynn (Winston), Ruby, Michelle (Brad), and Tanya (Danny), Rochelle (Daughter/Granddaughter); 22 grandchildren; 31 great grandchildren; 3 great-great grandchildren, sister Marsha (Lew); Son-in-laws: Austin and Albert; and brothers in law Noah and Morgan. (As well as a large circle of family and friends).

She was predeceased by sons; Tony and David, Daughters; Ann, Joy and Lillian, First husband; Sidney, and second husband; Eric.

During her 92 years she devoted many years to raising her children, whom she loved dearly. She worked for a number of years at Fishery Products International. She was also a devoted member of the United Church- Her faith in God was unwavering. She cherished her relationships with friends and family alike. Her home was a place where all were welcomed. She was a wonderful cook, baker, and homemaker. Her personality was jovial, kind, caring, compassionate and loving. She never met a stranger and she always made time to get to know everyone she met. Whether you knew her a lifetime or only a short while, she had a way of making you comfortable in her presence.

To the world she was one person, but, to her family, she was the world.

Rest in peace precious mother.

Visitation will be held on Friday February 21st at the Central United Church at Quirpon Branch from 2-4pm and 7-9pm, The funeral service will be held at 2pm on Saturday February 22nd followed by burial at the Old United Cemetery in St. Lunaire-Griquet

SAUNDERS, ERIC

September 10, 1929 - January 15, 2025

It is with broken hearts that the family of Mr. Eric Saunders announce his passing on January 15, 2025 at the Charles S. Curtis Memorial Hospital in St. Anthony at the age of 95 years.

Eric Saunders was born to William and Isabelle Saunders on September 10, 1929 in St. Lunaire and was youngest of seven children. He spent his early years fishing with his brothers and later worked in Goose Bay in the lumber woods.

For many years he had a Bombardier snowmobile and frequently brought friends and neighbours to the hospital as well as in the bay to cut wood. His nephews and nieces fondly remember piling in on weekends for campfire trips.

He was a quiet man with gentle humour and dearly loved his extended family and all children but especially Rochelle.

He leaves to mourn his wife Rita of 39 years as well as a wide circle of family and friends.

Visitation will take place from the Calvary Pentecostal Tabernacle in St. Lunaire-Griquet, NL on Thursday, January 16, 2024 from 2-4pm and 7-9 pm. The funeral service will take place at 2:00 pm on Friday, January 17, 2024 with Pastors Geoff and Charity Butler officiating. Interment to follow.

May 25, 1955 - September 15, 2024

CULL-SAUNDERS, DOROTHY MAUDE (nee Gillard)

August 2, 1930 - March 29, 2022

Passed peacefully away on March 29, 2022 surrounded by family at Charles S. Curtis Memorial Hospital at the age of 91 years.

Maude was a lady who loved life and church. She surrounded herself with family, friends, and strangers alike. She was well known for her little sayings and quotes by all who had the privilege to know her.

She leaves to mourn with fond and loving memories, Children, Freeman (Glenda), Larry (Bessie), Wesley (Charlene), Ada (Donald) Weir, Morris (Josephine), Cindy (Hughie) Crewe, Winnie (David) Power; Grandson, raised as her own, Richard (Tina); Stepson, Stanley (Donna) Simms; Son-in-law, Frank MacWhirter; Sister-in-law, Verna Gillard, 21 Grandchildren, 16 Great-grandchildren, 1 Great-great-grandchild as well as a large circle of extended family and friends.

Maude was predeceased by her husband, Lester Cull (1982); Second Husband, John Saunders; Daughter, Bessie MacWhirter; Daughter-in-law, Myrtle Cull; Parents, Frederick and Bessie Gillard; Brothers, Baxter and Frederick Gillard Jr.; and Sisters, Pearl Keefe, Stella Compton, and Lucy Tetford.

SAUNDERS, LORETTA MAE

Born to Fred and Gladys Burden, in Griquet on October 26th, 1930. Passed away July 28th, 2018 at the Charles S. Curtis Memorial Hospital in St. Anthony at the age of 87 years. Loretta married George Saunders on December 1st, 1948 and together they raised five children; Madge, Ruby, Jim, Glorine, and Annie. Her family meant the world to her and her grandchildren where the light of her life. She love the outdoors and enjoyed gardening, berry picking, and watching the bird and the squirrels coming to the feeder. She was a skilled knitter and contributed to the Women’s Missionaries knitted goods outreach program. She and her husband George were faithful members of the Calvary Pentecostal congregation in St. Lunaire-Griquet. She was predeceased by her husband George and Daughter Ruby. She will be missed by those who mourn her passing and are left with cherished memories. She leaves to mourn with fond and loving memoires her Son Jim (Sylvia); Daughters Madge Decker, Glorine Saunders, Annie Patey (Roy); Son-in-law Bruce Parsons; Eight Grandchildren; Nine Great-grandchildren; Brother Winston Burden (Vida); Sisters Madge Pynn (Joe), Minnie Roham, Sylvia Pilgrim (Ron), Annie Hillier, Flossie Curlew (Freeman); Brother-in-law Eric Saunders (Rita) as well as a large circle of extended family and friends. SAUNDERS, CENITH

On November 17, 1924, Cenith Richards was born to Cyril and Mary Richards. On July 1st, 1947 she married Norman Saunders and together they raised seven children and one grandchild. She also had two children from a previous marriage. She was a faithful soldier of The Salvation Army for more than seventy years which she dearly loved and was quite active until her health failed. Mrs. Cenith Saunders of St. Anthony passed peacefully away at the John M. Gray Center on the 10th day of June 2017, Mrs. Cenith Saunders was in her 92nd year. She leaves to mourn sadly missed and loving memoires her family Sylvia(Tommy), Louis(Betty), Marie(John), Lloyd(Elizabeth), Betty(Boyd), Calvin(Ellen), Edith(Winston), Olga(Larry), Paul(Sharon, Michelle(Dan), a number of Grandchildren, great Grandchildren, and Great Great Grandchildren, one sister Viola Patey including a large circle of relatives and friends. She was predeceased by her Husband Norman, Brothers and Sisters, Grandson, Nephews and Nieces. Visitation was held at the funeral home in St. Anthony followed by the funeral service which took place on Tuesday June 13th, 2017 at the Salvation Army Church in St. Anthony at 2:00pm with Captain Brown officiating. SAUNDERS, NORMAN GARFIELD

Passed away at the John M Gray Centre in St. Anthony on December 19, 2016 at the age of 90 years. Norman Garfield Saunders was born on June 5, 1926 to Fred and Mary Saunders. On July 1, 1947 he married Cenith Richards and together they raised seven children and one grandchild. Norman worked for the Grenfell Association for forty-one years. He was a faithful soldier of the Salvation Army for more than seventy years and attended the church regularly until two months before his passing. He will be missed and lovingly remembered by his wife Cenith and family; Marie (John), Lloyd (Elizabeth), Betty (Boyd), Calvin (Ellen), Edith (Winston); Olga (Larry), Paul (Sharon), Michele (Dan); step children Sylvia (Tommy) and Louis (Betty). He was also blessed to have an extended family of half-brothers and sisters (Budgells) of Campbelton; two half-sisters Pearl Pilgrim and Mabel Canning of Deer Lake. A number of grandchildren, greatgrandchildren, and great-greatgrandchildren, as well as a large circle of friends. Norman was predeceased by his Father, Mother, his half sisters and brothers. Visitation was held at Kerry M. Fillatre’s Funeral Home in St. Anthony until the funeral service on December 23, 2016 at 2:00 pm which was held from the St. Anthony Salvation Army Church with Captain Brown officiating. SAUNDERS, OLIVE

April 16th, 1920 ~ April 24th, 2014

 

Olive was born on April 16th, 1920 as the eldest child of William and Gladys (Hancock) Allingham in Cooks Harbor. She married Fredrick Joseph Saunders of St. Lunaire on September 2, 1940. As a result of their marriage, they were blessed with the birth of four daughters and five sons. They also raised two granddaughters. Olive’s hands were always busy, making clothes for her children, making skin boots (In the early days!), knitting, hooking rugs, making quilts, and baking. Her bread and pies were the very best! She also spent many hours in the fishing stage with her husband during the 30 summers they spent at Indian Tickle on the Labrador coast. Later in life Olive married Francis Sampson of River of Ponds aknd Selby Loder of St. Lunaire-Griquet. She was loved and cherished by all and will be missed dearly. Olive passed away on April 24th, 2014 at the Charles s. Curtis memorial hospital in her 94th year. Brother in law Eric (Rita) Saunders, Sister in law Loretta Saunders, AS well as 35 Grandchildren, 70 Great grandchildren, 9 great great grandchildren as well as a large circle of nieces and nephews and other relatives and close friends.  The visitation was held at the Pentecostal Church in St. Lunaire- Griquet, from which the funeral service was held on Sunday April 27th with Pastor Wayne Baker officiating, burial followed in the Church Cemetery.
