DECKER, IRIS

September 3, 1940 - July 21, 2020

Iris Marina Decker Born September 3, 1940 in Red Bay Labrador, resident of Ship Cove Newfoundland, passed away July 21, 2020 at the home of her daughter in Middle Sackville, Nova Scotia, predeceased by her Father and Mother Thomas and Fronia Pike of Red Bay Labrador. Survived by her husband Ross Decker and four children, Ron Decker (Darlene) Middleton NS, Penny Decker, Sacramento California, Kevin Decker, Dartmouth, NS and Jean Decker Samson (Cameron) Middle Sackville, NS 5 grandchildren, Kimberly, Angela, Alex, Dylan and Jake, 1 great-grandchild Danicka. As well as her Brothers: Heber Pike, (Donna), Bert Pike (Mallie), Bill Pike (Linda), Dave Pike (Joan), Ross Pike (Maisie), Kevin Pike (Elaine), and Wayne Pike (Janet) and her sisters Sophia Bessey (Jim), Ruth Poole (Wallace), and Emily Hall (Darryl) and numerous nieces and nephews. Iris was a well known and much loved lady in her community, And she loved Ship Cove with her whole heart. She showed her dedication to the town and its people over the years through her efforts, which were focused and also far reaching. She wanted to see the community cleaned up and preserved for all to enjoy for generations to come. She worked with the government to get improved roads, walking trails, benches, picnic tables and signs. She worked along side the recreation committee to clean up the beaches, and got work for summer students to preserve the history of Ship Cove. From her 35 years as a teacher to later years on the Labrador Grenfell Board she served tirelessly to improve the lot of the people she considered her friends and family. The children she taught were special to her and she never forgot one name. Iris also served her God throughout her life, teaching Sunday school, leading the United Church women, serving on the manse committee to get a permanent minister for the area. She made many friends with the clergy and was always pleased to have them share a meal after Sunday service. Through the years she wore many hats, wrote letters for people, prepared their taxes, tended to the sick as they needed it, but she was most proud to be a mother and grandmother, taking time to travel and visit her children as they scattered around the world, displaying their pictures and praising their accomplishments whenever she had a willing ear. She was a devoted wife of nearly 60 years and Ross and Iris spent very little time apart. She was a force to be reckoned with, a light to her family , friends and community. DECKER, VIOLET GENEVIEVE (nee Patey)

December 31, 1920 - November 24, 2019

Violet Genevieve (Patey) Decker was born in St. Anthony on December 31, 1920. She was an adventurous, fun loving person who always enjoyed a good laugh. Violet graduated from the Grenfell Amalgamated School and went on to get her teaching license at Memorial University College. She began her teaching career in 1942 in St. Anthony Bight, from there she taught in Brooklyn, Bonavista Bay, the Grenfell School in St. Anthony and in Ship Cove where she met her husband and married in 1950. When they moved back to St. Anthony she had several jobs and finished her working career as a switchboard operator at Curtis Memorial Hospital. She loved to travel and often spoke of her trips to Florida, Europe and within Canada. She especially reminisced about her train trip across Canada and also loved practicing her French in St. Pierre. She enjoyed spending time in her garden and knitting beautiful afghan blankets. In later years, when she wasn’t at her cabin in Ship Cove, she could be seen walking from her house to her parents’ for a visit with them and her sister Mary. Violet loved being a part of the 50+ Club and continued to enjoy the social scene at Shirley’s Haven especially the card games and the musical entertainment. She kept up to date on current news and world events and would discuss it with anyone who was interested. She leaves to mourn her brother Dennis (Dorothy) Patey; her nieces Sharon Spurrell, Kathy (Colin) Morris, Janice (Paul) Kattenbusch; nephews Glenn Patey, Dion (Darlene) Patey, Danny (Stacey) Patey, Darren (Tina) Patey; great nieces Danielle, Shawna, Lauren, Brooke and Natasha; great nephews Christopher, Nicholas, Jordan, Cayden and Logan; one Great-great nephew Patrick. Violet is predeceased by her husband, Gilbert Decker; her parents Leslie and Amelia (Ash) Patey; her sister Mary Belle Patey; her sister and brother in law Rosalie & Eric Spurrell; her brother and sister in law Edmund (Ted) & Gladys Patey. Visitation to take place from Kerry M. FIllatre’s Funeral Home in St. Anthony on Tuesday 26, 2019 from 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm. The funeral will take place on November 27, 2019 at 2:00 pm from the St. Anthony United Church with Rev. DECKER, NEVA IVY

was born in Miles Cove, NL to Stephen and Rhoda (Short) Normore on September 28, 1941. She had one sister and four brothers. She met Samuel Decker while he was teaching in the area and they were married on September 29th, 1960. Neva was the proud mother of three sons: Moody, George, and Stephen. Neva and Samuel were also blessed with four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; whom they loved dearly. Neva followed her husband, Samuel, to his hometown of L’Anse aux Meadows; but they spent many years living in Ontario and Corner Brook before returning to L’Anse aux Meadows. They later moved to St. Lunaire-Griquet where they lived out the remainder of their lives together. Neva was a homemaker at heart but spent most of her working life at the Fisheries Products Plant in St. Anthony. She had a love of quilting and gifted her family with her homemade expressions of love. Neve was predeceased by her husband, Samuel, on October 20, 2017. They were committed to the faith, loved God, and regularly attended the Pentecostal Church in St. Lunaire-Griquet. She leaves to mourn her Sons, Moody (Sue-Ann), George (Yvonne), Stephen (Wanda); Grandchildren, Bobby, April, Stephanie, Vanessa; Great-grandchildren, Lucas, Leah, Skylar; Brothers, Cyril (Avis), Lloyd (Flora); Sister, Joy (Cecil), as well as a large circle of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and close friends. Neva was predeceased by her husband, Samuel Wilfred Decker; Father, Stephen Normore; Mother, Rhoda (Short) Normore; Brothers, Eric, and Lesie. Visitation was held from the Pentecostal Faith Tabernacle in St. Lunaire-Griquet from where the funeral service was held on Wednesday, May 2nd, 2018 at 2:00 with Pastor Baker officiating. DECKER, IVY MARIE

It is with great sadness that the family of Ivy Marie Decker announce her passing on Friday, March 23, 2018 at Curtis Memorial Hospital in St. Anthony at the age of 83 years. Born in Cook’s Harbour on July 13th, 1934. She leaves to mourn with precious memories, her loving family: Her sons, Glenn (Glenda) Pittman, Barry (Sharon) Decker, Trevor (Kim) Decker; Daughters Evelyn (Dennis) Keats, Wanda (Brian) Hughes, Dorcas (Doug) Pelton; Her grandchildren Glenn (Arlene), Shelley , Chris (Vina), Barry (Tracey), Tara and Allie; Great grandchildren Cody and Max; Her Sister Gladys Warren; Her brothers Everton Pittman and Aaron (Winnie) Pittman. Ivy also leaves behind a special friend Louise Short and a wide circle of family and friends. She is pre-deceased by her husband, Maxwell Aaron Decker. Visitation begins on Saturday March 24th at St. Matthews Church Cook’s Harbour. Family service to be held on Monday March 26th at 7 pm. A celebration of Ivy’s life will take place at St. Matthew’s Church Cook’s Harbour Tuesday March 27th at 11:00 am. Flowers are welcome, and donations in memory of Ivy can be made to St. Matthew’s Anglican Church Cook’s Harbour.

DECKER, CHRISTOPHER ROBERT

                Christopher Robert Decker was born in St. Anthony, N.L on November 17, 1941 to Alan and Leah (Simms) Decker.

                He was raised in Roddickton, N.L, along with his brothers, Eli and Melvin, surrounded by numerous family and friends.

                After finishing Grade 11 in Roddickton, Chris left home at 17 to complete his Grade 12 at Prince Of Whales College in St. John’s, N.L. After Grade 12 he went on to Memorial University to complete an Arts degree before heading to Pine Hill University in Nova Scotia. At Pine Hill he graduated with A Masters of Divinity.

                He met Patricia Roberts in 1965 and married June 27, 1967. They went on to have two children, Lynn and John.

                Chris wore many career hats over the years. United Church Minister to Boat Building. Owned Logging companies to clothing stores. However, his passion was politics. After being involved in Municipal politics for many years, he made the move to Provincial politics. In 1984 he was elected as a Liberal member to serve what was then, The Straits, White Bay North. After a lengthy career serving his great district and province as MHA, and Minister in several portfolios, he retired from the Public Sector in 1999 to lead a more private life.

After a very brief retirement he began working again as a consultant and Author in which he wrote and published three novels.

Of all the careers and titles he has held, his favorite was Grandfather. He lived to spent time with his four grandchildren, Alexandra, Bradley, Christopher and Eddie, and his favorite quote was; “If I knew grandchildren were so much fun, I would have had them first.”

                Chris, along with his wife Pat spent their retirement years between Roddickton, Little Bay Islands and Florida, where he was always surrounded by family and friends, and enjoyed life to the fullest.

                After battling Cancer for over three years he passed away peacefully early Saturday morning, August 8th, 2015. He was predeceased by his parents, Alan and Leah, his brother Eli, and his parents in law, Joe and Daisy Roberts.

The family will be holding a “Celebration of Life” Service at 2 pm, Wednesday, August 12th, 2015 at John Wesley United Church with a burial of his ashes at a later date.
