DECKER, VIOLET GENEVIEVE (nee Patey)

December 31, 1920 - November 24, 2019

Violet Genevieve (Patey) Decker was born in St. Anthony on December 31, 1920. She was an adventurous, fun loving person who always enjoyed a good laugh. Violet graduated from the Grenfell Amalgamated School and went on to get her teaching license at Memorial University College. She began her teaching career in 1942 in St. Anthony Bight, from there she taught in Brooklyn, Bonavista Bay, the Grenfell School in St. Anthony and in Ship Cove where she met her husband and married in 1950. When they moved back to St. Anthony she had several jobs and finished her working career as a switchboard operator at Curtis Memorial Hospital. She loved to travel and often spoke of her trips to Florida, Europe and within Canada. She especially reminisced about her train trip across Canada and also loved practicing her French in St. Pierre. She enjoyed spending time in her garden and knitting beautiful afghan blankets. In later years, when she wasn’t at her cabin in Ship Cove, she could be seen walking from her house to her parents’ for a visit with them and her sister Mary. Violet loved being a part of the 50+ Club and continued to enjoy the social scene at Shirley’s Haven especially the card games and the musical entertainment. She kept up to date on current news and world events and would discuss it with anyone who was interested. She leaves to mourn her brother Dennis (Dorothy) Patey; her nieces Sharon Spurrell, Kathy (Colin) Morris, Janice (Paul) Kattenbusch; nephews Glenn Patey, Dion (Darlene) Patey, Danny (Stacey) Patey, Darren (Tina) Patey; great nieces Danielle, Shawna, Lauren, Brooke and Natasha; great nephews Christopher, Nicholas, Jordan, Cayden and Logan; one Great-great nephew Patrick. Violet is predeceased by her husband, Gilbert Decker; her parents Leslie and Amelia (Ash) Patey; her sister Mary Belle Patey; her sister and brother in law Rosalie & Eric Spurrell; her brother and sister in law Edmund (Ted) & Gladys Patey. Visitation to take place from Kerry M.
