She was a devoted wife and mother. She loved cooking (and nobody made better bread, rice soup, carrot cake, or turkey dinner than our mom). She also enjoyed knitting, cross stitching, fishing, going to the cabin and search-a-word puzzles. Most of all she enjoyed her daily bible reading. In addition to being a homemaker, she operated a small retail business out of her home for many years.

CANNING, ERIC RUDOLPH

Eric Rudolph Cannning was born to Obediah and Leah Canning of Englee on August 28, 1931, the third of eight children. On July 12, 1951 he married the love of his life, Gladys May Parsons, and together they raised eleven children.

He lived a very active life. At the age of ten, he started working at a sawmill for Saunders and Howell. At age fourteen he went to work in the lumber woods, where he was employed until 1978; at which time he became the janitor at Evely Collegiate in Roddickton. He was employed there until he retired at age 65.

He enjoyed cutting wood, fishing, rabbit catching, berry picking and moose hunting with the boys. He always enjoyed his daily rides with mom, until his health declined – but not his memory. Dad was a lovely singer and button accordion player, and he always played the accordion for his family. He was a friend to everyone he met, and there was always a meal of trout available for anyone who
wanted them.

He will always be dearly loved and missed by all of us.

See you soon!

HUMBY, ELI GEORGE

Eli George Humby, known as George Humby, was born on December 2nd, 1931, in St. Lunaire - Griquet, to Edward and Jessie Humby. They moved to Roddickton in the early 1950’s, so his father could work in the woods for a lumber company. At a young age he started working in the woods for Bowater Pulp and Paper as a wood cutter. After working in the woods for about 10 years he started a small general store for the area. He then ventured to Goose Bay with his good friend Earl Pilgrim to work on the military base driving forklift. While still running the oil business he started his own lumber business “Northern Lumber Company” where he employed 419 men from the area. In 1985 he started a general store in town known as E.G Humby and Sons. This store sadly burned after only 5 years in business, but they relocated to a new location which they ran until 1997. He was always concerned about local jobs and went to great lengths to create jobs in the local area. In retirement he was always around to help his three sons out in any way he could. He enjoyed spending time with his family and good chats with his friends at the coffee shop. In 1960 he married Alma Lillian Harris and they had three sons, Paul, Peter & Perrin. They were also blessed with eight (8) grandchildren and six (6) great-grandchildren. George’s greatest pleasure was to give to others as God blessed him. George blessed many people that only God knew about.
