SLADE, ALFRED FRANK

May 13, 1930 - July 17, 2022

Frank was born on May 13, 1930 at Lushes Bight, Notre Dame Bay to John and Laura Slade. At the age of 4 Frank moved with his family to St. Anthony where he grew up. At an early age Frank started working on the Grenfell Mission and then later fishing on several different boats. He also had several jobs in his younger years at Goose Bay, Toronto and North Carolina.

While in North Carolina he almost got drafted into the US Army to fight in the Korean War. He had to decide between going in the US Army or returning to Canada, which he decided to return to Canada. On returning to Canada he met up with his buddy Don Penney in Toronto who was in the Canadian Army and he enlisted in the Canadian Army for the Korean War. Frank was a sergeant and paratrooper in the War. After the War Frank stayed in the military for a short time before being honourably discharged.

He worked for a short time in Toronto as a police officer before returning to Newfoundland and Labrador. Frank married Clara Patey on October 3, 1961 at Happy Valley/Goose Bay. He worked as an heavy equipment operator in Schefferville and Sagelak before returning to St. Anthony where he worked with Lundrigan’s on the roads being built on the Northern Peninsula. He then worked as the wharfinger at the government wharf in St. Anthony for many years before working as a commissioner at the airport until he retired.

In his younger years Frank loved hunting, fishing and out in boat. He was Lieutenant of the Canadian Rangers in St. Anthony for many years. He also loved animals especially his cats. Frank was a dedicated military man and this was evident to all who had a chance to talk to him.

Frank passed away on July 17, 2022 at the John M Gray Center at the age of 92 years.

He is survived by his Brother, Norman (Dorothy); Sisters, Maude (Jim) Delaney, Jessie (Bruce) Rye, Joyce Cull; Brothers in Law, Louden (Druscilla) Patey, Hedley (Marina) Patey, Ron (Pam) Patey, Ralph (Sally) Patey; Sisters in Law, Mary Slade, Kitty Slade, Victoria Marshall; Nephew, Jeffrey (Janette) Slade; Niece, Phyllis (Neil) Ireland; Close Friends Mary and William Patey as well as many other family members and friends.

He is predeceased by his Wife, Clara; Parents, John and Laura Slade; Brothers, Cyril Slade, Raymond Slade, Eric Slade; Sister, Marg Rickett; Brother in Law, Ron Cull, Robert Rickett; Sister in Law, Ellen Slade.

The family would like to thank the staffs of Shirley’s Haven Personal Care Home, Charles Curtis Hospital and John M Gray Centre for providing care and comfort over the past 4 years.

Public visitation to be held at Kerry M Fillatre Funeral Home in St. Anthony from 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm on Wednesday, July 20, 2022 and from 2-4 pm and 7-8 pm on Thursday, July 21, 2022. A private family visitation will take place on Thursday at 8:00 pm. The funeral service will be held from the St. Anthony United Church at 2:00 pm on Friday, July 22, 2022. Interment to follow.
