Thomas Simms was born to Effie (Reid) and Reuben Simms of St. Anthony Bight on July 17, 1944. Tom lived in St. Anthony Bight until he went to Moncton, New Brunswick to take training as a pilot. After completing his training he worked in gander, as well as Goose Bay, returning to St. Anthony in 1976 to work with Grenfell Regional Health Services. He worked there until he retired in 2009. In 1967 Tom married Peggy Budgell of St. Anthony and together they raised two children, Tommy and Tammy. Tom was a kind man and a great friend to all. He enjoyed nature, his gardens, and tinkering with all kinds of engines and could get anything that wasn’t working to work. Tom was a man of great faith and was always faithful to his church. After battling cancer for several years, Tom passed away peacefully on Monday evening, January 13th, 2020 at the age of 75. He leaves to mourn, his wife of nearly 53 years, Peggy; Son, Tom (Sherry); Daughter, Tammy (Dave), as well as his two granddaughters, Amanda and Ashley; Two great-grandsons, Jorden and Jackson. He also leaves to mourn his sister, Bernice (Roy); Brother, Roy (Irene); Sister-in-law, Marie; four brothers-in-law, three sisters-in-law, as well as a large circle of extended family and friends. Tom was predeceased by his parents, Reuben and Effie Simms as well as his brother Bruce. Visitation to take place from Kerry M. Fillatre’s Funeral Home in St. Anthony on Wednesday, January 15, 2020 from 3-4 pm and 7-9 pm as well as Thursday, January 16, 2020 from 2-4 pm and 7-8 pm with the family service taking place at 8:00 pm. The funeral will be held from the St. Anthony United Church at 2:00 pm on Friday, January 17, 2020 with Rev. John McGonigle officiating. Interment to follow in the St. Anthony Bight Community Cemetery. Funeral arrangements entrusted to Kerry M. Fillatre’s Funeral Home, St. Anthony and Roddickton, Alicia Patey, Funeral Director.
