EDDISON, WINNIFRED HAZEL

May 5, 1944 - October 11, 2024

Winnifred Hazel Eddison (nee Young) of Noddy Bay, NL passed away in the presence of her loved ones at the Charles Curtis Memorial Hospital on October 11, 2024 at the age of 80 years.

Winnie was born in Quirpon to Thomas and Alfreda ( Nee Roberts) Young, Her mom passed away when she was seven years old and she became a mother figure to her brothers that continued throughout her lifetime. She married Wesley Eddison of Noddy Bay on January 24, 1964 and raised five children together. She worked at the fish plant until she had her first battle with cancer. She fought cancer on three occasions but always remained witty and funny throughout it all. She always maintained that moonshine was the best medicine for any and all  illnesses. She will certainly be remembered by her family for her amazing cooking skills, berry picking, knitting and making quilts. Her quilts are in all corners of the world with a few in bed and breakfast businesses on the Northern Peninsula. 

Winnie leaves to Mourn with a lifetime of wonderful memories, her children: Dwayne ( Shirley), Sheldon ( Tracey), Barry ( Kelly) Jackie and Tanya ( David); Sisters: Florence, Nellie and half sister Barbara; Brothers: Lloyd (Joyce), Eric (Moriah), Norman (Glenda), Algie and  half brother Thomas; Brother in law Francis ( Selma) Hedderson. Grandchildren: Marcel, Stefan; April, Alexander, Dayna, Hayward, Erin, Ethan, Amanda, Aaron and 13 great grandchildren. Winnie will also be greatly missed by a large circle of other relatives and close friends. Too many to name but Matilda Pynn, Graham Burden, Hazel Hedderson, Beryl Pilgrim, Karen Patey. Joy Hedderson ( Both of them) , Carl Hedderson ( Her psychiatrist), 10 well fed chickens and the rest of Aunt Blanche's children are a few. 

Winnie was Predeceased by her parents and husband Wesley. Father in law Walter Eddison and Mother in law Victoria ( nee Roberts) Brother in laws Ambrose ( Elsie) Hedderson, Nimrod Hedderson, Stan ( Nellie) Bishop. James ( Flo) Barron. Sister in laws Johanna (Ernest)Hillier, Blanche( Peter) Hedderson, Mary Ann (Israel) Blake  and Sarah Jane ( Willie) Bishop.

Visitation will take place from the Central United Church at Quirpon Branch  on October 14th 2024 at 6-9pm and October 15, 2024 at 1-3pm and 6 to 9pm.  The funeral will take place on  Wednesday, October 16, 2024 at 2:00 pm with Reverend Arthur Kinsella officiating. Interment to follow at the Quirpon Cemetery.

With great sadness the family of Colin Applin announce his passing at the Charles S. Curtis Memorial Hospital in St. Anthony on the 9th Day of October, 2024 at the age of 62

BUSSEY, JEAN FLORENCE

September 5, 1948 - October 10, 2024

Jean Florence Bussey of St. Lunaire-Griquet passed away at the John M Gray Centre on October 10, 2024 at the age of 76 years.

Jean Leaves to Mourn with a lifetime of memories, her Husband of 57 years: Guy Bussey; her Son: Jake (Darlene), Tony; Sisters: Lucy, Bernetta (Francis); Brother: Rod (Lorriane), Freeman (Flossie), Albert (Lorriane), & Don (Gloria).; Grandchildren: Emma, Jacob, and Benjamin. Jean will also be greatly missed by a large circle of other relatives, close friends and church family.

Jean was Pre-deceased by a Baby Girl; Parents: Albert & Caroline Curlew; Brothers: Melvin, Wilfred (Pearl).

BARRETT, RITA

It is with profound sadness that the family of Rita Barrett announce her peaceful passing at Charles S. Curtis Memorial hospital on the 23rd of September, 2024 at the age of 64.

Rita was born in Roddickton in 1959. After high school, she worked in Deer Lake and Toronto before returning to Newfoundland. She participated in the archaeological dig out along the shore in Crouse, and worked for many years at the Fish Plant in Conche. Her strong work ethic was very evident, always committed to her work, and always strived to do her best. Rita was a woman of great integrity and honesty, and always displayed a willingness to go above and beyond in completing tasks.

Rita was a kind and gentle soul who loved to have a laugh, especially at work and when she played Mrs. Claus at the Conche Christmas Parade. She loved going on adventures in the great outdoors: going on boat rides, fishing, skidooing, hiking, playing darts, and participated as a volunteer in many community and parish activities.

Rita's grandchildren were the center of her world. She could be found doing anything they asked of her. She often played dinkies and dressed up as various characters on her FaceTime sessions with the boys. She loved visiting them and having them come to her home. When they were around, she danced, played catch, went sliding, and did many more fun activities with them.

Rita will be deeply missed,, always loved, and never forgotten.

Lovingly remembered by and leaving to mourn are the love of her life, Stephen, her loving family: son, Victor (Pamela), her grandchildren: Broderick, Patrick, and Nicholas, her sisters: Ivy Curl (Guy), Wavey Colbourne, her brothers: Garry Colbourne (Violet), Lorne (Lucinda), Austin, Terry (Belinda), Keith (Lisa), many nieces, nephews, cousins, and a large circle of friends.

Predeceased by her parents: Wesley & Ida Colbourne, siblings: Wesley Junior and Alvin Colbourne.

The family would like to thank the Staff at the Charles S Curtis Memorial Hospital in St. Anthony, her ENT doctor in St. John's, Dr. Jamie Tibbo, and her oncologists for their special care and compassion.

Visitation will be held at the Calvary Pentecostal Temple in Roddickton will take place on 28th of September from 11-12pm and a Celebration of Life Service will take place at the same location with Pastor Murdoch Pittman officiating on Saturday, September 28th, at 2:00 pm. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

GENGE, DULCIE

November 24, 1927 - September 24, 2024

Passed peacefully away on Tuesday, September 24, 2024 at the John M. Gray- Patridgeberry Path, Long Term Care Facility in St. Anthony, NL at the age of 96.

Dulcie was born in Deep Cove, NL to Abram and Alice Genge. She was the oldest of a family of 7. She married the love of her life, Ronald Genge on May 8, 1947 in Anchor Point. it was there that they made a life together and raised their family. Her husband passed away at the age of 62, 37 years ago. Dulcie continued to live at home, surrounded by her family whom she watched and admired daily as her family expanded. She loved each and every one unconditionally.

Dulcie lived in her home until the age of 90. She had many hobbies that she enjoyed. She loved sewing, knitting, gardening, cooking- especially cooking Hot Dinners for her crowd and baking “the best homemade bread”, just to name a few.

She moved to the Ivy Durley Place on May 31, 2018 where she enjoyed herself to the fullest and was treated like royalty. On September 25, 2023 she moved to the Patridgeberry Path wing of the John M. Gray where she spent her last and final year. Everything was always “the best” and she was loved by all.

Our Mom was the heart of our family who always put the needs of her family first. She was a friend to all and she loved everyone. A kind, caring and giving person who faced every challenge head on with courage and determination.

She leaves to mourn her Daughters: Linda, Bertha (Doug), Hilda (Eddie); 6 Grandchildren: Kim (Darryl), Lon (Yvette), Rodney (April), Dane (Jadean), Benay (Troy), Andy (Jennifer); 12 Great-grandchildren: Ian (Tori), Boyd (Danielle), Kyle, Owen, Chloe (Dylan), Ryan, Eric, Luke, Lexie, Kate, Kennedy, and Sophie; Youngest brother: Isaac; Sister-in-law: Jessie.

Dulcie is predeceased by her husband: Ronald Genge; Parents: Abram and Alice Genge; Sister: Tena; Brothers: Kirby, Stedman, Roland, Noah; and Son-in-law: Donald Way.

Visitation to take place from St. Matthew’s Anglican Church beginning the afternoon of Thursday, September 26, 2024. The family service will be at 8:00 pm Thursday evening. The funeral will be held on Friday, September 27, 2024 at 11:00 AM with Rev. Canon Vernon Short officiating. Interment to follow in the old Anchor Point Anglican Cemetery.

STEVENS, LENA GAIL

It is with profound sadness that the family of Lena “Gail” Stevens announce her passing on Sept 20, 2024 at Charles Curtis Memorial Hospital at the age of 61. Throughout the last decade she had struggles with her health. She fought a long and hard battle to stay with her family to watch them grow and shower them with love- until the lord called her home.

Gail was married to her true love Tom for 20 years. In her good health when you would see one you would see the other- whether it was fishing, hunting, in the woods and on their evening drives. Throughout the last few years the sickness took over her body but her true love, Tom, was always by her side through sickness and health.

Left to mourn is her husband Tom; Sons: Ronnie Glenn (Amanda), Scott Stevens (Lorna); Daughter: Sherry Pilgrim (Tyson); Granddaughter: Sierra and Karen (Ge); Grandsons: Scott (Mackenzie), Tyrone (Jalyse), Devon (Shandi); and great-granddaughter Avery; Brother: Everton Patey; Sisters: Alma Hillier (Bryan), Leona Patey (Roy), Carolann Patey (Rob), Sandra Patey (Eric), Betty Patey (Overton); Special Niece: Joanne Strangemore (Sam); Special Nephews: Gabe and Parker; Homecare worker: Cathy Tucker; Lifelong friend: Marilyn Walker (who stood by her side during her last few days) and Richard Richards for all his visits and laughs. She also leaves to mourn a large circle of nieces, nephews, in laws, family and friends.

Gail is predeceased by her parents: Elizabeth and Thomas Patey & Sybil and Lloyd Patey; Brother: Kirby and Sisters: Rhonda and Pearl.

The family would like to thank the staff in the Dialysis, Intensive care and Palliative Care unit at Charles Curtis Memorial hospital who took such great care of her over the last few years.

Visitation will take place from the Salvation Army Citadel in St. Anthony on Sunday, September 22, 2024 and Monday, September 23, 2024 from 2-4pm and 7-9pm. The funeral service will be held on Tuesday, September 24, 2024 at 2:00 PM with Major Stokes and Major Dart-Stokes officiating. Cremation will follow with inurnment to be announced at a later date.

PATEY, FRANCIS

With great sadness, the family of Francis Patey announce his passing on September 18, 2024, at Charles S. Curtis Memorial Hospital. In his 88th year, Francis passed peacefully with family by his side after a battle with dementia.

Francis leaves to mourn his wife of 59 years Agnes (nee Bartlett), son Chris (Beverly), daughter Joanne (Ghislain), former daughter in law Denise Patey (nee Simms), former son in law Todd Robertson and his cherished granddaughters Melissa and Jessica Patey, both of St. John's, and Madison Robertson of Kingston, Ontario.

Francis was predeceased by his parents Pte. Noah Patey of Hare Bay and his mother Meta (nee Pilgrim) of St. Anthony Bight, as well as brothers Wilfred, Charlie, Norman (Elsie), Stewart (Ida), Lloyd (Marie) and sister Jessie.

Francis’ working career began with a stint teaching in Hopedale. Over the years, he worked with Government services in both Nain and Hopedale, as well as with various construction companies. He eventually settled into a nearly 20-year career as a Commissionaire, initially at the” old” St. Anthony airport before becoming the first commissionaire at the” new” St. Anthony airport. He developed a love of aircraft (but did not love flying in them) and the aviation world, and had great respect for the talented pilots that flew them and the Air Traffic Controllers who guided them. A full airport also meant a captive audience as he was sure to find someone to strike up a conversation and share some stories. He also served with the Canadian Rangers from1978 to 2002.

Over the years, he enjoyed simple pleasures such as dart night at the Legion, coaching the Aces, setting a few snares in the winter and bamboo fishing in the summer. He tried his hand at making home brew which inevitably resulted in exploding bottles at random times during the day and night. Later in life, he used his creative talents to carve and create dioramas depicting traditional Newfoundland life. He could often be found helping Agnes in her garden. But of all the things he enjoyed and accomplished, it was his three granddaughters that brought him the most joy.

Francis will most likely be remembered as a historian with an incredible memory for local facts, events and people. As a natural storyteller, most conversations began with “do you remember when” before he’d launch into a story of local significance. He was involved with the creation of St. Anthony’s first newspaper, The Polaris News, and went on to become a regular contributor to its successor, The Northern Pen.

After retirement, he dedicated his time to preserving and recording local historical events and went on to publish several books. He was especially proud of the scrapbook he created chronicling the late 1970’s seal hunt protests and the day when Greenpeace came to town. This scrapbook was sought out by the academic world and made its way through numerous universities across Canada and into the United States as well as at the Rooms.

While Francis enjoyed his trips to St. John's and Ontario, he was truly at home in the neighbourhood where he was raised on the east side of St. Anthony. He was a local fixture on Lamage Point and enjoyed chatting with his neighbour buddies and watching boats from his vantage point overlooking St. Anthony harbour.

In his final weeks at Charles S. Curtis, Francis asked Agnes how old he was; she replied 88. He looked around for a moment, thought about it, and said with his familiar little grin...” that's not too bad”. Indeed, not too bad at all! He was well respected and will be sorely missed.

Cremation has already taken place, a family service will be held on (To Be Announced) with a burial at a later date.

PATEY, JOYCE MARIE

November 30, 1934 - September 17, 2024

Joyce was born in St. Lunaire on November 30, 1934, to the Late William and Alice (Compton) Earle. But that is only the beginning of her story.

On November 13, 1952, when she was 18 years old, she married the love of her life, Noah Patey. He was her confidant, support, encourager, and strength, right to the end.

In the years that followed, ten children were born to them - Roy (Annie), Selma (Newell), Verick (Karen), Dean (Wavey), Frank (Sharon), Lloyd (Brenda), Roger (Kathy), Rowena (Wade), Glenda (Scott), the baby of the family, Charlie (Denise), and her special niece, Lori. She loved their spouses as much as them, but especially the grandchildren they gave her - 17 of them in total - Kenny, Jamie, Charlene, Angie, Gregory, Mandy, Ryan, Stephanie, Samantha, Damian, Candace, Janelle, Nichole, Courtney, Jeffrey, Jessica, and Caleb, plus two step-granddaughters, Melissa and Jessica. In the years to follow, great-grandchildren were born, and it is possible she loved them most of all - Lucas, Daniel, Rebecca, Paige, Mason, Jake, Kylie, Judah, Maxx, Benjamin, Rachel, and Ross. For almost 72 years, Joyce and Noah’s was a story of love, patience, generosity, and commitment, a legacy and example that will not soon be forgotten.

Joyce loved berry picking, especially partridge berries and bake apples, and was known to scrape over the “mish” before the berries were even ripe. You could always count on her to catch the biggest fish, or to get a trout or smelt when no one else could manage to get a bite. She’s was a constant companion to “Noar”, whether it was a trip to the woods, Main Brook for trouting, berry picking across the bay, or just for a ride in the latest vehicle. And how can we forget the molasses buns, fresh bread, chocolate chips cookies, and candies that were always found in plenty.

She was also known a

s the canteen lady for years, operating the school cafeteria at A. Garrigus Pentecostal School, until she retired. It was there many students, and sometimes a teacher, had their debts forgiven, and everyone knew the smile of “Aunt Joyce.”

But most importantly, Joyce was a woman of great, unshakeable faith. Life was sometimes a challenge. But you could always find her at home drawing a Promise from the Promise Box, or reading her Bible, and she was always eager to pray for her family and assure them everything was going to be okay. She was a faithful supporter of her church and her pastors, and taught Sunday school and led the preschool class at VBS for many years, along with her sister in law, Mary. If there was ever a woman of God, Joyce Patey was just that.

She was predeceased by her parents, her in-laws Samuel and Beulah Patey, Siblings Charles (Sis) Augustus (Mae) Agnes (Ambrose) Martha (Tom), Pastor Harvey Earle (Lavinia), her special brother, Frank; brothers in law Sidney Hussey and Gordon Pilgrim; and a precious granddaughter (Charlene). She leaves to mourn her husband, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, sisters Marshall (Lewis), Rita (Eric), and a large number of family and friends.

Her Homegoing Service will be conducted at the church, on Thursday, September 19, 2024 at 2:00pm, by Pastors Geoffrey and Charity Butler, and her grandson, Pastor Gregory Patey.

MYERS, GERARD JOSEPH

Gerard Joseph Myers, 63, of Bird Cove, NL, passed away on September 4, 2024 in Bird Cove.

Gerard was born in Bird Cove to Uriah & Alice Myers on July 6, 1961. He went to high school at St. Augustine’s Central High and graduated in 1980. He went on to earn a degree at the College of Trades and Technology in 1981. He enjoyed many hobbies including rebuilding his corvette, playing darts, carpentry, and most of all his music. Gerard was a very avid musician and composed and wrote his own music. He played many instruments including an acoustic and electric guitar, piano, harmonica and so forth.

Gerard is survived by his siblings: Catherine (Stan), Jean (Jimmy), Hughie (Sheila), Mike (Irene). Bernice (Stewart), Geraldine (Moses), Philomena (Larry), Leon (Darlene),and David, nieces and nephews: Chad (Chantal, Cole, Caylee), Joan (Simon, Brandon (Michelle, Dominic, Octavia, Avery) TJ), Scott (Devina), Marilyn (Toby, Braydon), Della (Murray, Natalie, Alexis, Aleah), Lionel (Denita), Tracy (Alyssa, Ashley), Andre (Nathan, Michael, Milan), Lisa (Bernie, Sasha, Patrick, Somea, Pierson), Quentin (Amanda, Kobi, Jayla), Travis (Betty, Daniel, Matthew, Benjamin), Gino, Robyn(Adam, Aliya, Caden), and Allan (Kayla, Mason, Marcus).

He is preceded in death by his father, Uriah Myers, mother, Alice Myers, sister, Joanna Myers, brother, Patrick Myers, brother-in-law, Mike Pittman, sister-in-law, Annette Myers, and nephews, Mario and Damian Mahar.
