CAMPBELL, ALVIN

July 1, 1932 - October 4, 2023

It is with heavy hearts, that the Campbell family announce the passing of our beloved father, grandfather, brother and friend. Alvin Warren Campbell, age 91, of Wild Bight, formerly of Cape Norman, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 4th, 2023 at the Charles S. Curtis Memorial Hospital.

Alvin was born on Cape Norman to the late Gertie (Bradbury) and Jacob Campbell.

Alvin worked 35+ years as a Lighthouse Keeper on Cape Norman where him and his wife raised their four boys.

Before trucks and cars, he would provide transportation to the hospital by snowmobile for anyone in need. He also took on the difficult task to recruit teachers to the area and would provide them housing.

He was an entrepreneur providing many services to surrounding communities such as a Yamaha and Dodge dealership, Campbell’s Esso Auto Body Shop and Gas Station and Harbour View Lounge and Take-out that many would argue had the best chicken around.

In his younger days, he enjoyed boat building, carpentry, snowmobile rides to the sawmill, helping out at the garage and bartending where he met lots of fishermen from around the province.

He loved the company of his children and especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Left to mourn are his sons Warren (Faye) Campbell, Randy (Emily) Campbell, Everett (Juanita) Campbell and Craig (Carolyn) Campbell; grandchildren, Tammy (Brad) Hedderson, Shannon (Carey) Pittman, Sonya (Donny) Cull, Jeremy (Tiffiny) Campbell, Monica (Cameron) Campbell, Jessica (Grant) Gaudet; great-grandchildren, Devon, Dana, Tyler, Riley H., Riley P., Annika, Mila, Remi, Reid and Wyatt; brother Lyle; sisters Marjorie and Elsie, sister-in-laws Virginia (Fred) Bursey, Grace Laing and Tamsey Laing.

He was predeceased by his loving wife Jessie; parents Gertie and Jacob Campbell, his mother and father-in-law Jane and Norman Laing; brothers Malcolm, Joseph, Seymour and Everett; brother-in-laws Walter, Curling, Stewart, Lloyd, Stanley; sister-in-law’s Elizabeth, Martha and Evelyn.

Visitation will be open to the public on Friday, October 6th, 2023 from 2-4pm and 7-9pm, followed by a family service at 8:30pm. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, October 7th at 2pm from the funeral home with Rev. Nath Larkin officiating. A graveside service will follow at Cape Norman graveyard.

In loving memory of Dwane Morgan Simms,

It is with heavy hearts that the Simms family announce the passing of Dwane Simms at the age of 62, on September 22nd, 2023 in Roddickton, Newfoundland.

He leaves to mourn his wife, Judy of 31 years, his 3 daughters, Nicole, Terri (Nick), Valarie (Garrett), step son Roger Randell, his granddaughter Jessa, his mother Pearl, his 4 siblings, Viva (Lester), Janice (Archie), Oral (Marlyce) and Brian (Renee) as well as a large circle of cousins, nieces, nephews, extended family and many friends. Dwane was predeceased by his father Arch as well as his sister Paulette.

Dwane’s legacy will live on in the hearts and minds of his family and everyone he interacted with. He will be remembered for his kind spirit, his endless patience, his quiet strength and fierce love for his family. Dwane enjoyed spending time with his family more than anything else. Dwane loved to cook and he took great satisfaction and pride in cooking and providing for others. He also loved the outdoors and he often found peace gazing out at the water or at the night sky.

BAINES, ELIZABETH

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our devoted mom, nan, great nan, mom in law, Sister and friend, Elizabeth Baines of Shoal Cove West, after a short illness. Elizabeth passed peacefully surrounded by her family on Monday September 18, 2023 at the age of 81 years, at Rufus Guinchard Health Centre in Port Saunders.

Mom was an exceptional woman, she loved to be surrounded by her family, sharing her famous Sunday dinner, playing cards, telling stories and having a good laugh. She was a hard worker who spent many years in the fish plant, she also worked very hard for family always making sure we had everything we needed and wanted. Mom also enjoyed many hobbies, she loved crafting, sewing, along with gardening and berry picking. Mom was certainly a woman of many talents and always persevered in every situation, Mom it is your love and strength that will guide us through.

She leaves to mourn with fond and loving memories her children: Perfie (Sib) Jenneaux, Jeanetta (Mark) Donahue, Margaret (Howard) Myers, Andy (Bernice) Baines and Nancy (Keon) Toope; grandchildren: Jari, Jolon (Holly), Kirstie (Jason), Michele (Nate), Ann (Kris), Howard (Deanna), Brandon (Savannah), Nakita (Jonathan), Keon and Luke; great grandchildren: Miley, Joan, Blade, Scarlett, Harper, Adaline, Josie, Desmond, Piper, Archibald, Valerie and Sophia; sisters: Vivian Coombs, Rowena (Cosmo) Beaudoin, Bessie Coombs, and Belinda (Steven) Applin; brothers: Lambert (Iris) Coombs, Israel (Kathleen) Coombs, Honorary Daughter Michelle Hynes and Special niece Laverne Hynes Sister in Law Susan Baines, brother in law Angus Coombs as well as many other relatives and friends.

The visitation is taking place at St. Margaret of Scotland Anglican Church in Reef’s Harbour on Wednesday evening, Thursday and Friday (sept. 20,21 and 22) with the family service being held at 7 pm on Thursday night, followed by the funeral service at 4pm on Friday the 22nd of September with Rev. SHEARS, BENJAMIN

November 16, 1939—September 16, 2023

It is with profound sadness that the family of Benjamin Shears, ESQ 🤣 (Ben) announce his passing. He passed away surrounded by family at the John M. Gray Center for seniors in St. Anthony on Saturday, September 16, 2023. Ben fought a long and courageous battle with Alzheimer’s dementia. He leaves to mourn his loving and devoted wife, Beatrice, of 60 years (nee Nicolle), his children Michele (Wade) and Michael (Nadine) and his cherished grandchildren Katie (Patrick), Andrew (Bre), Sarah (Wayne), Joshua (Samantha) and Avery. He was blessed with one great-grandchild, Eleena Hope. He is survived by his beautiful sister Maxine, sisters-in-laws Mildred and Betty and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

Ben was predeceased by his parents Richard and Olive Shears, his infant sister Olive, his mother and father-in-law Victoria and James Nicolle, sisters Evelyn, Leila, Georgina and Sharon, brothers Rick, Rod, Austin and sisters and brothers-in-law Thelma, Myra, Max, Bob, Lloyd, Gordon, Klaus.

Ben grew up in Hawkes Bay, but often referred to “home” as St. David’s where he was born. He married the love of his life, Beatrice Nicolle, on August 31,1963. Together they raised two children; Michele and Michael. He ran his own auto body shop for years until he sold it and worked as a school bus driver until his retirement in 2004.

Ben loved the great outdoors and spent time fishing, snowmobiling, berry picking, getting firewood and doing odd jobs around the house for Beatrice or one of his children. He enjoyed close friendships with some who have gone before him; Fred, Kev, Floyd, Melv and Robert. Mack, Ray, Ross, Ron, Ken, Tom, and Ches he mentioned you often; you were important to him. Even in the grips of Alzheimer’s he often said your names.

Ben loved company, a good yarn, an argument or time spent doing things he loved with his favorite people.

In 2016, as the disease progressed, he and Beatrice moved to St. Anthony to be closer to family. In 2019 the heart wrenching decision was made to move him to the John M. Gray Center for seniors. It was there that he lived out the rest of his days with the love of his life visiting every day or every second day as health and strength permitted.

His family would like to extend heartfelt gratitude and thanks to the front line staff nursing staff at the John M.Gray Center. Staff went above and beyond to respect his personhood, his dignity and all his care needs during his four (4) years at the center. His last days and hours were surrounded by caring and dedicated staff; special thanks to Hayley, Patsy, Georgina, Terri, Alfreda, Trish, Nekita, Valerie and Shanda. Your professionalism and kindness made a difficult situation bearable.

A memorial service will take place at St. Mary’s Anglican church in St. Anthony on Tuesday Sept 19 2023 at 4:00 pm with Rev. Arthur Kinsella officiating. The church will be open at 1:00 pm for viewing, Cremation will follow and the funeral service will be announced at a later date.

WHITE, STANLEY

October 15, 1953 – September 10, 2023

It is with heavy hearts the family of the late Stanley White announces his passing on Sunday, September 10, 2023 at Charles Curtis Memorial Hospital at the age of 69 years. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife Mona; very special and precious daughter Janet; Sisters: Joyce (Gaydon), Clara (Robert); Brother: Donald (Agnes); In-laws: Sue, Eva (Garfield), Eliza, Sarah, Barbara (Harris); and many nieces and nephews who loved him dearly.

He was predeceased by his father: Stewart; mother: Maria Jane; Sister: Elizabeth (Charlie); brother: Clifford; in-laws: Miriam, Roland, Dora (Henry), Margaret (Nelson), Alma (Gerald), Edmund, Kirby, Roland (Ivy).

Mona and Janet are so grateful for the care and support the Dialysis Unit has given to both dad and daughter. A Special thank you to Dr. Mina, Tonya, Brooke, the intensive care unit, and the nursing staff on the ward.

Stan loved the outdoors, hunting and fishing were very much top of his list. He was very happy with his many recreational toys – of course joy-riding was his speciality. Stan was a social butterfly, loved lots of company and was always the life of the party with his great singing voice.

Funeral Service will take place on Saturday, September 16, 2023 at 2:00, St. Thomas’ Church, Sandy Cove with Rev. Vernon Short officiating. Followed by internment of ashes in the Anglican Cemetery in Savage Cove.

SEAWARD, NITA (Nee Strangemore)

November 1 1945 - September 12 2023

It is with heavy hearts that the family of the late Nita Seaward announce her passing on September 12th, 2023 at Curtis Memorial Hospital in St. Anthony, at the age of 77 years.

Nita is survived by her daughter, Joyce and her precious granddaughter, Leanne (Shay); Her siblings: Selwyn (Ivy), Charl (Gaye), Carl (Selma), Guy, Marilyn Walker, and Eva (Riley) Applin; Nieces and Nephews: Jodie, Nicole, Tammy, Luanne, Shelley, Todd, Marla, Colby, Christopher, Heidi and Gavin. She also leaves behind 15 Great-nieces/nephews, as well as a special Aunt Lillian (Hayward) Elliott, and her dearest and closest friend Ivy Taylor.

Nita is predeceased by parents Naomi and Hayward Strangemore; Son-in-law: Roy Burt and Brother-in-law: Tony Walker.

Nita will be remembered for her love for her family and her kindness to everyone.

REID, ELAMORE FRANCIS

May 13, 1949 - August 25, 2023

Elamore Francis Reid passed on August 25, 2023 at the Curtis Memorial Hospital in St. Anthony, at the age of 74 years.

Elamore is the son of the late Esther (Reid) Compton, and step father Noah Compton. He leaves to mourn his stepfather, Noah; two siblings: Kevin Welcher and Vivian Compton as well as many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. 

There will be a memorial service held at the Apostolic church in Roddickton to be announced at a later date.

SHEPPARD, HEPSEY

Hepsey was born August 6,1940 to Jacob & Sarah Fanny Cunard of Brig Bay. She married Heber Sheppard and made a home in Brig Bay and raised a family. She was known and loved by many. She passed peacefully on Sept 11, 2023 at Curtis Memorial Hospital St. Anthony at the age of 83 with loving family by her side.

 She leaves to Mourn, her son: Myles (Cindy); daughter: Paula (Wade); a very special niece: Tannis (Stedman Jr.); grandchildren: Scott, Jake, Calletta, Bobby, Brittany; as well as a great-grandchildren Genah, Jason, Kain, Kaleigh, ; Siblings: Eli, Eric (Ann) & Terry; and a large extended family who loved her dearly.

Hepsey is predeceased by her husband: Heber; son: Bob (Alma); grandson: Jeff; Siblings: Grant (Elsie) MaryAnn (Eric) Wallace (Rita) Hubert, Matilda, Issac, Elizabeth (Donald); as well as many other in-laws.

The family would like to send a special thank-you to the staff of the Curtis Hospital in St. Anthony for their wonderful and compassionate care, we deeply appreciate all that you have done.

TWYNE, BLANCHE (Nee Moores)

December 2, 1948 - August 26, 2023

Blanche Was born on December 2, 1948 in Forteau, Labrador to the parents of the late Thomas and Martha Moores.

After completing high school, she moved to Grandfalls where she obtained her certificate as an LPN. After nursing in several outport villages in Labrador, she moved to St Anthony in 1970, it was there where she met George Twyne the love of her life.

She was then blessed with two beautiful children Colinda and Lenny, whom she loved unconditionally. Blanche devoted her life to her career, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, and to many many more. To them she was their loving aunt B.

Her respect for nature was passed along to all through countless adventures. Her smile, her laugh, her love for life will continue on forever with her countless surviving family, friends and those whose lives she touched .

Blanche leaves to mourn with a lifetime of memories, Her children: Colinda (Warren), Lenny (Lorie); Her grandchildren: Rikkie, David, Rikita; and her darling great grandchildren: Peyton and Drayden; Brother: Richmond'; Sister: Thelma (Hubert), as well as a large circle of nieces and nephews, extended family and friends.

She was pre deceased by her late husband: George Twyne; her parents: Martha and Thomas Moores; her brother: Harry Moores; Her parents in law Herbert and Cinderella Twyne; her sister in laws: Judy Moores, Alma Francis Twyne, Elsie Moores; Brothers in law: Barry Newell, Robert Small, Stafford Cooper, Alonzo Twyne, as well as many other extended family and friends.

A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, September 5, 2023 at 2:00 PM from the Bethel Pentecostal Church in St. Anthony with Pastor Jeff Elliott officiating. Interment to follow in the United Cemetery.

WAY, IVY

February 28, 1955 - August 27, 2023

Ivy passed away August 27, 2023 at the age of 68 years.

She was a hardworking woman who loved her family dearly. She is loved and missed beyond measure.

Ivy leaves to mourn with a lifetime of memories, her husband of 42 years, Stewart Way; Daughter: Tana Way; Grandson/Son: Jaden Way; Grandsons: Jagger Coles, Jaxon Coles; Brother: Kirby (Marion); Sister: Phoebe (the late Baxter Hughes), as well as a large circle of extended family and friends.

She is predeceased by her Son: Darryl Way; Parents: George and Una Coates; Brothers: Ross, Stan, and Winston; Sister: Hazareth.

Visitation to take place from St. Andrew’s Anglican Church in Lower Cove beginning the afternoon of Friday, September 1, 2023, with the family service to take place at 7:30 PM. The Funeral service will be held at 10:00 AM on Saturday, August 2, 2023 with Rev. Vernon Short officiating. Interment to follow.
