BUDGELL, LESTER ROSS

October 5, 1951 - July 17, 2022

Lester Ross Budgell was born in St. Anthony on October 5, 1951 to Fred and Dora Budgell. He was one of ten children that grew up scouring the rocks and ice pans on Fishing Point. In 1975 he met the love of his life, Donna Richards and they celebrated 40 years of marriage on August 4th of last year.

Lester and Donna settled in St. Anthony, where they had 4 loving children. Lester was a teacher and guidance counsellor in St. Anthony for many years until retiring in 2004, touching the lives of many students along the way.

Lester was a true gentleman with a kind, generous spirit who lived to help others and exhibited a deep love for God and Family. He was a fixture in the Salvation Army church and significantly contributed to the St. Anthony Corps as a band member, worship team leader and frequent vocalist. He enjoyed cooking, snowmobiling, boil-ups, music, hockey and especially spending time in his fishing boat or the salmon river.

Under the caring hands of the staff at Curtis Memorial Hospital and after a lengthily, courageous battle with declining health and family by his side, Lester peacefully passed away on July 17, 2022.

Lester loved to entertain, and especially loved visits with his children, grandchildren and friends. Lester will always be remembered with deep love and affection by his soul mate, Donna and their 4 children Justin (Joanne), Timothy (Stephanie), Chrisoula (Jordan), David (Caitlyn), as well as 7 grandchildren Reed, Rohen, Brie, Emilia, Brian, Mya, and Joseph.

The Budgell family gratefully acknowledges all individuals who offered medical, spiritual, emotional and physical comfort during Lester’s period of illness, especially medical professionals at Curtis Memorial Hospital and the Health Science Center in St. Johns.

Visitation to take place from the Salvation Army Citadel in St. Anthony beginning 7-9 on Tuesday, July 19, 2022 and continuing on Wednesday from 2-4 pm and 7-8 pm to be followed at 8:00 pm by a private family service. The funeral will take place on Thursday, July 21, 2022 at 2:00 pm with Major Stokes officiating. Interment to follow. BONNELL, NORMAN

August 14, 1945 – July 12, 2022

It is with great sadness that the family of the late Norman Bonnell of Forresters Point, announce his passing at the age of 76 years. He leaves to mourn with fond and precious memories, his loving and devoted wife Vera; nephew/son Carey (Sheri) Bonnell stepdaughter Renotta (Neil) Mahar; Grandchildren; Ryan & Jayme Bonnell and William Mahar; his siblings: Mamie, Millie (Abraham), Francis (Lionel), Gladys, Ivy, Lorenzo (Louise) as well as a large circle of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was predeceased by his parents: James and Elizabeth Bonnell; father in law William Wells and mother in law Lydia Wells; brother in-laws Alphonsus O’Neil, George Coombs & James Gibbons. Norman had a deep love for his family and friends and always enjoyed fishing, hunting and trapping as well as a good game of cards. Friends may attend the family service at St. Mary’s Church in Black Duck Cove on Saturday July 16th at 8 PM. The funeral service will be held on Sunday July 17th at 2 PM at St. Mary’s Church with Rev. Coates officiating. Interment to follow. All expressions of sympathy and flowers are graciously accepted.

BREEN, CHARLES JOSEPH

January 29th, 1938 - July 8th, 2022

It is with heavy hearts and deep sadness we announce the passing of a loving husband, father, brother, uncle, and friend. Charles passed away Friday July 8th, 2022 at the John M. Gray Centre in St. Anthony at the age of 84.

Charlie was born in Canada Harbour to John and Gertrude Breen. He was remembered for played his accordion at school but most will remember him as the accountant at John Reeves Ltd. and a local business owner. He loved to stay busy, always working on some type of project, and in his spare time he would return home to Canada Harbour where he felt most at peace. His love of the ocean was only surpassed by his love for animals.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife Dorothy, Children Chris (Tracy) & Doreen (Jesse), Brothers Aiden (Ann), Edgar (Olive), Gordon (Margaret), Melvin (Susanne), Patrick (Blanche) as well as a large number of other relatives, nieces, nephews, and friends.

Charles is resting at Faith Pentecostal Church in Englee. Visitation to take place on Monday, July 11, 2022 from 2-4 pm & 7-9 pm. Funeral service to be held Tuesday July 12th @ 2:00 pm with Pastor Paddock officiating. Interment to follow at Englee Pentecostal Cemetery.

REARDON, BRENDON

It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts we announce the passing of Brendon Reardon on June 27, 2022.

Brendon moved away from the GNP at a young age and pursued a career in computer programming and computer technology. He spent the last 25 plus years living in Topsail, CBS but Brendon always called the community of Goose Cove home. He returned home at every opportunity. He enjoyed the simple life that Goose Cove had to offer. He’d spend his time fishing, hunting, boating, cooking up meals, singing and playing guitar , and always made an overnight trip to Ireland Bight .

Brendon was highly intelligent with an inquisitive mind, a lover of learning and knowledge. He enjoyed reading, researching, and keeping up on the news and world events .

Brendon's greatest accomplishment and joy in life was his daughter Olivia. Unfortunately, his role as Dad here on earth was cut too short, we’ll find comfort knowing they are reunited and enjoying all Daddy-Daughter things together again.

Left to mourn with fond memories are siblings; Dan (Jose), Elmore, Ralph (Philomena), Carl (Wanda), Eileen (Alyster), Sheila; Special Niece, Vanessa Ricks and lifelong friend, Todd Powell as well as a large circle of family and friends .

Brendon is Pre-deceased by parents Ambrose and Hilda Reardon, Daughter Olivia Genevieve , Brothers Sylvester and Gord, step brother Edward Reardon and sister-in-law Rosalind, and niece Candice Lewis.

Funeral Mass will be held at the Church of The Immaculate Conception in Goose Cove NL, With Father George Officiating, Burial will follow the service at the Roman Catholic Cemetery in Goose Cove.

SMITH, THOMAS

August 7, 1935 - June 26, 2022

Thomas Smith passed peacefully away at Charles S. Curtis Memorial Hospital, St. Anthony at the age of 86 years old, on June 26, 2022, with his family at his side.

He was born in St. Anthony on August 7, 1935, the son of John and Drucella Smith of Raleigh. Thomas married the love of his life, Hilda (nee Taylor) on February 14, 1955. Together they had five children Joyce, Pansy, Terry, Shirley and Peggy.

Thomas spent a number of years working as a equipment operator with Stanley Hodge in St. Anthony. In 1969 he went to work with NL Hydro as a plant operator, 11 years later continued as a fisherman for his remaining career. He lived a good healthy retirement, enjoying moose hunting, tending to his garden, visits from his grandchildren and many trips salmon fishing in Main Brook with very special friends.

He leaves to mourn with fond and loving memories, his loving wife Hilda, daughters Joyce, Pansy, Peggy, Shirley (Jeff), and son Terry (Linda), brothers Willis, Barton (Virtue), sister Viola (Abiel), 12 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren, 1 great great grandchildren and many extended family and friends.

He is predeceased by his parents, John and Drucella, brothers Jack (Anna), Felix (Joanna), Jerry (Jane), Noah (Laura), sister Elizabeth (Caleb), sister in law Nellie and son in law Gilbert.

APPLIN, ELIZABETH JANE (Nee Woodward)

October 18, 1940 - June 24, 2022

Jane was born in Boat Harbour to Elder and Muriel Woodward. She was raised there until she went to St. Anthony to work at the hospital. On May 8, 1962 she married Gordon Applin. They lived in St. Anthony for a number of years before moving back to St. Barbe. She and Gordon had two children Dennis and Sheila. Jane was an active woman who loved knitting and enjoyed card games, berry picking, gardening and camping. She and Gord enjoyed working in their garden as well as spending time in their camper. On Friday Jane passed peacefully away.

Jane is survived by her husband of 60 years Gordon as well as her children Dennis (Mary Ann), and Sheila (Bob), also her grandchildren Shannon (Angela), Kerry (Lisa) and Mateo (Charlotte).and great-grand children Ella and Evan. She is also survived by her sisters Eleanor, Gladys, Ethel, and brother George.

She is predeceased by her parents Elder and Muriel, brothers Nelson and Harrison, and sisters Bessie, and Evangeline. She will be sadly missed.

Visitation to take place from the United Church in Pidgeon Cove beginning the evening of Sunday, June 26, 2022 and will continue until the funeral on Wednesday, June 29, 2022 at 2:00pm with Rev, John McGonigle officiating. Interment to follow.

PILGRIM, VELMA BERNICE (Nee Tucker)

October 25, 1944 - June 8, 2022

Today we honor the life of our dear wife, mother and grandmother. She was a truly amazing woman whom we loved and cherished.

Bernice was born in Ship Cove on October 25, 1944, the oldest child of Annie and William Tucker. She lived with her parents and two younger sisters until she was 16 and then left to work with the Grenfell Mission and attend school in St. Anthony.

While working in St. Anthony she met her life-long partner and future husband, Guy, The two were inseparable and did almost everything together. They were married in 1966 and had on child together.

Bernice loved her flowers and was often seen outside attending her flower beds or in the greenhouse. She also very much enjoyed going to the cabin, berry picking, knitting, and spending quality time with family and friends.

She dedicated her life to her family and making sure they were supported in whatever they did and that they never felt anything other than loved.

Left to always remember and mourn are husband, Guy; Daughter, Trudy; Son-in-law, Keith; Grandchildren, Bradley and Jenna; Sisters, Sandra, Mamie and a circle of extended family and friends.

After her passing, cremation took place in St. Johns. A funeral service took place from the St. Anthony Bight United Church on Tuesday, June 28, 2022 at 11:00 am with Rev. John McGonigle officiating. GENGE, MABEL

January 1, 1932 - June 24, 2022

Passed away June 24, 2022 at her home in Deadman’s Cove at the age of 90 years.

Mabel is forever loved and remembered by her Daughters, Joy (Michael) Byrde, Una Genge; Son, Jock (Dale) Genge; Grandchildren, Danielle and Christopher; Great-grandchildren, Karlee, Hannah, Isaac and Alyssa; Sister-in-law, Olive Samson; Brother-in-law, Cyril Shepard, as well as a large circle of nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

Mabel is predeceased by her Husband, Rendell; Son, Floyd; Parents, John and Edna Chambers; Brother, Curtis; Sisters, Mary, Olga, Ethel, Minnie, Bertha, and Marion; Mother and Father In-Laws, Charles and Eva Genge as well as many brothers and sister in-laws and other family members.

Visitation was held from St. Matthews Anglican Church in Anchor Point from where the service took place on June 28, 2022 at 2:00 pm with Rev. Short officiating. Interment followed. KEATS, EDWARD RALPH

Edward Ralph (Ricky) Keats

Ralph (Ricky) Keats passed peacefully away at the John M. Gray Centre, St. Anthony, on June 17, 2022, with his family, at his side.

He was born in St. Anthony on July 2, 1932, the son of Samuel and Emma Keats. Ralph married Mabel Moores from Red Bay, Labrador on January 16, 1963. They had three children, Sharon, Shawn, and Terry.

Ralph worked with the Department of Highways as a heavy equipment operator for twenty-five years. He enjoyed the outdoors -- gardening, fishing, hunting, berry picking…

He leaves to mourn his wife, Mabel, sons Shawn (Madonna) and Terry, grandson, Mark, and sister Gertie.

He was predeceased by his daughter, Sharon, parents Samuel and Emma Keats, brothers Baxter, Joseph, and Raymond, and sister Edna.
