February 17th, 1930 – July 1st, 2019
Everett married Lucy Compton on January 3, 1952, together they raised 6 children. Everett began working for Ford Elms at the young age of 16. He continued to work with Stephen and Gwen Knudsen after Ford retired. He did maintenance and repairs around the store and other properties, along with loading and unloading fish, truck driving, picking up building supplies in Corner Brook, delivering seal pelts to Dildo. Even driving the snowmobile in the winter taking Police, nurses and doctors to the surrounding communities. He continued to work there until his stroke in 1987. He worked hard to provide for his family. He also liked to build things, from houses to furniture and even a few boats. Even though he worked a lot, he found time for his family, taking the kids ice fishing, trout fishing, boil ups and cooking fishermen's brews over the open fire and even Sunday afternoon drives. Sunday mornings he would go to church, taking the kids with him, while Lucy would stay home and cook dinner. He would take the kids back for Sunday School and when picking them up after, all the kids that could would get in the back of the truck for a ride home, (he had one of the first trucks in the community). After his stroke, with the love and encouragement of his wife, Lucy, he continued to build things, toys, furniture and models for his grandchildren and do some maintenance around the house. He also loved his puzzles, putting together more than a hundred over the last few years. He also like to ride his stationary bike, wearing out two. He was a quiet and patient man who never complained. He will be remembered in love, and missed by his family. Everett leaves to mourn his Wife, Lucy Earle; Sons, Boyce (Judy), Wayne (Marilyn). Todd (Sandra); Daughters, Jean (Renato), Joyce (Len), Coleen (Wade); Brother, Hector (Jean); Brother-in-laws, Harvey (Lizzie), Ralph (Evelyn); Sister-in-laws, Velma Earle, Beatrice Compton; as well as 12 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren and a large circle of other relatives and close friends. Valma Myra Burden was born in St. Lunaire to Jacob and Blanche Bussey on June 11, 1934. She married Graham Burden and together they raised nine children. They were also blessed with nine grandchildren and four great grandchildren. One of Valma's favourite places in St. Lunaire, was in her kitchen preparing meals for the people she loved the most, her family, who were known to eat there daily. She was an early riser who often had her homemade bread baked by breakfast. She loved going for rides with her prince in his chariot and let’s just say that Mary Browns has lost one of its biggest supporters. Her smile had the ability to light up a room and to fill a gathering with warmth. She never sought praise but we could never praise her enough. She will forever be loved, remembered and cherished. If love could have saved her, she never would have died. Valma Leaves to Mourn her Husband, Graham Burden; Daughters, Ann (Garry), Karen (Verick), Kathy (Roger); Sons, Keith (Dianne), George, Neil (Lois), Kirby (Vanessa), Kent (Corry), Kerry (Wendy); Sisters, Yvonne (Mervyn), Joan (Bruce); Brother, Guy (Jean) as well as 9 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren, and a large circle of other relatives and close friends. COLBOURNE, ROBERT GORDON
April 25, 1967 – May 28, 2019
Robert Gordon Colbourne was born April 25, 1967 to Eliza and Winston Colbourne. He was the youngest of three children, with one brother, Whyman and a sister Irene, who gave him the only niece on his side of the family, Christa. At 17 years old he fell in love with Diane Earle. Their only daughter Jillian was born May 29, 1989. Then he married the love of his life on August 2, 1991. Rob and Diane have been each other's best friend since then. He loved spending his spare time at the cabin, fishing and snowmobiling. He enjoyed having a coffee and chats with his family and friends. He was devoted to Diane, and spoiled his daughter Jillian and his grandsons Liam and Jack who were precious to him and "Pop's tag alongs". He always had time for them and couldn't wait to get back from sea to be with them. He was looking forward to the new Grandson as well! He welcomed Andrew his son in law into the family and treated him like his own son. Several years ago Rob got to know God on a personal level and it was evident to everyone the positive change it made in his life. Rob worked hard to provide for his family, unselfishly spending long periods of time at sea. He started fishing with his father when he was a teenager in L’anse Aux Meadows. After he was married, he went to Ontario for three summers Sandblasting and Painting. He then started fishing in many boats on the southern shore. He also fished with some of his uncles on the Calm Sea for 7 years. After that, he fished as a Second Trawl Boss on the Acadienne Gale II for 16 years. Finally, he fished on the Newfoundland Victor for the past year and a half. What kept him going was knowing he had a family at home who loved him and was waiting for him. We bid Rob farewell on this his final voyage and until we meet again May God hold you in the palm of His hand. Robert Leaves to Mourn his Wife, Diane Colbourne; Daughter Jilian (Andrew) Baker; Grandchildren Liam & Jack Baker; Parents Eliza & Winston Colbourne; Grandparents Delilah & Selby Tucker; Sister Irene Simms (Clifford); Niece Christa Simms as well as a large number of other relatives and friends. Visitation was held from the Pentecostal Tabernacle in St. Lunaire-Griquet from where the funeral was held on Monday, June 3, 2019 at 2:00 pm with Pastor Harnum officiating. Interment followed in the New L’Anse Aux Meadows Cemetery. Funeral arrangements entrusted to Kerry M. Fillatre’s Funeral Home, St. Anthony and Roddickton, Lee Nippard Funeral Director.
PATEY, EDMUND (TED) WARREN LESLIE
January 18, 1926 - May 30, 2019
Edmund (Ted) Patey was born in St. Anthony on January 18, 1926, to Leslie and Amelia (Ash) Patey. Ted married the love of his life, Gladys Tucker in 1950. Together, they built a home and raised three children, Glenn, Kathy and Janice. Their home was always open to the neighbourhood children, many of whom have returned to visit over the years. The latest children to bring joy to his life were his five grandchildren and one great grandchild. He looked forward to their visits and they all cherished every moment they spent together.
As a young boy growing up in Northern Newfoundland Ted loved and embraced winter. He often spoke with pride of his dog teams, his days spent on skis, the boil-ups with friends at Bartlett’s Steady, his many trips to Long Pond and the much anticipated Sports Day on the harbour. He especially loved kicking football (soccer) on the harbour ice or in the fields near the hospital. In later years, he enjoyed his summer vacations around Atlantic Canada camping and exploring with family and friends. His cabins at Long Pond and Pistolet Bay brought him together with friends and provided much joy and relaxation. He loved to plant his vegetable gardens and watch them grow over the summer.
He always said that he lived through many eras of transportation from dog teams and boats to snowmobiles, cars and airplanes. Once he was introduced to motorized transportation, he developed a new passion which led to a career as engineer of the hospital ship ‘Maraval’. He always said “Before roads, the sea was our highway”. He spent many summers travelling the Labrador Coast and Northern Newfoundland with doctors and nurses who provided medical assistance. He said that he even learned to take and develop x-rays on the Maraval. Ted often recounted one eventful trip when the Maraval encountered a hurricane near Saglek Bay. In order to save the vessel, he and another crewman rowed ashore in 18 ft waves to attach a line. This event was documented by a photojournalist who was on board and the story was published in Life Magazine issued September 19, 1949. Another venture he talked about was when he was asked by Dr Curtis to travel to Boston to bring the new hospital boat, Albert T Gould, back to St. Anthony. He was the only Canadian on board.
He carried his love of engines to shore, where he was Mechanic and later the Vehicle Operations Manager at the Grenfell Mission garage. He serviced every type of engine including St. Anthony’s first fire engine, a 1929 Model A truck. He remained in this position until 1991, when he retired after 48 years with the International Grenfell Association/GRHS.
Ted still found time for recreation and was one of the founding members of the St. Anthony Athletic Club. The club established and maintained the first outdoor rink and was instrumental in the building of the St. Anthony Olympia. Ted spent countless hours maintaining the water pumps and generators at the arena. He was described as a valuable asset and great contributor and in 2005 was inducted into the St. Anthony Recreational Hall of Fame as a Builder.
He was a real historian and had an amazing ability to recollect with accuracy any event that he encountered throughout his life. He has been interviewed by several authors and has provided essential information for them to complete their writings about Northern Newfoundland and Labrador. Listening to him tell stories of his lifelong adventures will be sadly missed by family, friends and all that knew him.
He is survived by his children Glenn, Kathy (Colin Morris), Janice (Paul Kattenbusch); grandchildren Danielle (Joshua Cole), Shawna Morris (Albert Rand), Lauren, Brooke and Nicholas Kattenbusch; great grandchild Patrick Cole; sister Violet Decker; brother Dennis Patey (Dorothy); niece, Sharon Spurrell; nephews, Dion, Danny and Darren Patey.
He is predeceased by his wife of 61 years, Gladys, his sisters Mary Belle Patey and Rosalie Spurrell.
Visitation to be held from Kerry M. Fillatre’s Funeral Home in St. Anthony on Saturday, June 1, 2019 from 3-4 pm and 7-9 pm and on Sunday, June 2, 2019 from 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm. The funeral will be held on Monday, June 3, 2019 at 2:00 pm from the United Church in St. Anthony with Rev. Gus Pendleton officiating. Interment to follow. Donations of flowers graciously accepted as well as donations to the Alzheimer’s Society in loving memory of Mr. Patey’s late wife, Gladys.
