PILGRIM, JAMES GEORGE

In Loving Memory of James George Pilgrim

July 12, 1949 — November 5, 2024

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of James George Pilgrim, age 75, who

left us on November 5, 2024. James was born on July 12. 1949, in Griquet, Newfoundland, to

George and Mae Pilgrim.

James was united in marriage to the love of his life, Karen Pilgrim ( St. Anthony Bight), on

October 10. 1987. Together, they built a life in Griquet, where they raised their children and

created countless cherished memories.

A proud fisherman, James spent most of his life on the water, and he was known for his

unwavering dedication to his family and community. He was a passionate Toronto Maple Leafs

fan, proudly wearing his Leafs attire. In his free time, James enjoyed playing darts, berry

picking, and trouting. He found peace and purpose in reading his Bible and praising the Lord, a

source of comfort and strength throughout his life.

James was predeceased by his parents, George and Mae Pilgrim; his brothers, Ronald and

Edward; and his sister, Christine.

Left to mourn his loss are his devoted wife, Karen; daughters, Tina. April, and Mallory; sons,

Cory. Edward, and Dillon; grandchildren, Shannah, Daniel, Alexander. Connor, Zoe. Caylee,

and Olyver; and great-grandchildren, Deacon, Kyler, and Chay.

James is also survived by his brothers, Valance and Ernest; his sisters-in-law, Sylvia. Shirley,

and Madonna; his sons-in-law, Alasdair, Bradley, and Morgan; his daughter-in-law. Lynn; as

well as a large circle of friends and extended family.

James’s memory will forever live on in the hearts of those who loved him. May he rest in peace,

embraced by the love and grace of the Lord.

HILLIER, LEWIS

March 11, 1946 - June 22, 2023

Lewis Hillier was born to the late Stanley and Laura Hillier on March 11, 1946. He lived in Griquet. A fisherman in his earlier years, he met the love of his life, Joyce Budden in February 1967 and married in February 1968. Together they raised five children, Wilma, Kirby, Kent, Keon and Wanetta. Lewis worked with a logging company until his retirement.

He was a very hard-working man who loved and cared very much for his family. Two of his favorite hobbies were moose hunting and trout fishing. He will be sadly missed by his wife and children and grandchildren.

Lewis passed on June 22, 2023 at the age of 77 years.

He leaves to mourn his Wife, Joyce; Children: Wilma (Darryl), Kirby, Kent, Keon, Wanette; Grandchildren: Dustin, Britney, Nikki, Jorden, Nathan, Nolan, Tori, Summer, Paris, Makenzie, Kalen, Ciarra; Great-Grandchildren: Landen, Aiden, Grayson, Ellie, Brady, Gabrial, Olivia, Ryn; Siblings: Gerald, Wilfred, Clayton, Elizabeth, Minnie, Garland as well as many extended family and friends.

Lewis is predeceased by his Grandson: River; Parents: Stanley & Laura Hillier; Parents In Law: Leander & Ruby Budden; Brothers: Abe, Tom, Ralph, David; Sisters: Mabel, Marion; and Brother In Law: Lloyd Budden.

Visitation will be held at the Pentecostal Church in Roddickton beginning Sunday June 25th 2023 with a family only visitation in the evening, public visitation on Monday June 26th 2023 followed by the funeral service at 2pm on Tuesday June 27th, 2023.

PATEY, ALLAN

Allan Patey was born in St. Lunaire on July 17, 1936 to Samuel and Beulah Patey.  On Oct 19, 1960 he married the love of his life Florence (née Humby).  They had many years’ together and raised eight children who were the apple of his eye.  He was a dedicated and loving husband of 53 years, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother and friend.  He loved to attend church and prayer meetings until his health wouldn’t allow him anymore.  He was a hard worker and he never saw his family go without anything.  He was a fisherman until the moratorium and also a carpenter.  He helped to build churches in St. Lunaire-Griquet and Red Bay, Labrador, schools, wharfs, a bank and Norstead. He volunteered as head usher, a grave digger, a member of the fishermen’s committee and St. Lunaire Harbour Authority.  Allan enjoyed snowshoe making, going out for evening rides and he loved telling and playing jokes. He loved telling stories and cherished spending time with his family, especially grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  He was a man who would lend a helping hand to anyone in need.  Allan passed peacefully into the presence of his loving heavenly father on February 6th where he was reunited with his loving wife and loving parents and other family members.  

Left with many great and loving memories are his children Wanda (Jim) Eddison, Samuel (Audrey), William (Mary), Carol-Lynn (Tommy) Doran, Peggy-Ann (Morris) Curlew, Larraine (Teena), Valda (Glenn) Peddle, and Cory (Crystal).  Grandchildren Allan (Jocelyn), Evelyn (Brad), Shawn (Sara), Jeremy (Vanessa), Justin (Paislee), Jonathan (Vanessa), Brittany (Michael), Nicholas and Kian.  Great-Grandchildren Alexa, Braydon, Jaxon, Sasha, Griffin, Joey, Saskia, Landon, Alyssa, Jessa, Aleah, and Charlotte.  Sisters Beryl and Minnie, brother Noah, sister in law Joy, and many nieces and nephews and extended family and friends.  He was predeceased by his beloved wife Florence, loving parents Samuel and Beulah, great Granddaughter Kayla, sisters Violet and Ivy, brother Leslie.  Father and mother in law Joseph and Jessie Humby and a number of in-laws.  Funeral service which was held at 2:00 pm on Friday February 11th, with Pastor Bill Harnum officiating.  Interment followed in the church cemetery.  Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Kerry M. SIMMS, STERLING GEORGE

Passed away at the Charles S. Curtis Memorial Hospital in St. Anthony on the 6th of May, 2015, Mr. Sterling George Simms of St. Anthony in his 77th year. Sterling leaves to mourn his wife Shirley Simms, his sons Terry (Donna), Morgan (Verla), daughter Sybil (Glenn), Grandchildren Christa (Darryl), Jason (Angelina), Kristopher and Shannon, Great grandchildren Karli and Kaeden. As well as his brother Watson (Betty), Sisters Mariam Lane (Rex), Barbara Barton (Vincent), Patsy Penney (Leon) and long-time family friend Lorne Slade.  Sterling was predeceased by his parents William and Bessie, Brother Wellington Sister Carol Good, Nephew Kevin Hillier and Niece Shenna Barton. Visitation was held at the funeral home in St. Anthony and continued at the Pentecostal Church, from which the funeral service took place at 2:00pm on the 10th of May 2015 with Pastor Jeff Bessey officiating, burial followed the service at the church cemetery. PATEY, PHYLLIS BLANCHE

Phyllis was born to Josiah and Winnifred Kearley of Sop’s Arm, NL. She married Archibald Patey of little Brehat on July 18th, 1945. They raised ten children happily together in St. Anthony. Phyllis loved to cook, bake, knit, and especially sing and spend time with her grandchildren. Phyllis passed away in to perfect peace with her family around her at the John M. Gray Center in St. Anthony on the 4th of September, 2014 at the age of 87 years. Left with a lifetime of loving memories are her sons Rex (Leah), Don (Masie), Terry (Karen), Randy (Mary), Glenn (Gail), Kirby (Glennis) her Daughters Thelma (Lew), Judy (Ernie), Daughter in law Millicent, 25 Grandchildren and 26 Great- Grandchildren, she will be forever loved and sadly missed by all her knew her. Phyllis lived to see the passing of her Husband Archibald Patey, her sons Dennis Patey and Darren Patey and her granddaughter Treena Patey.  Visitation was held at the Pentecostal Church in St. Anthony, from which the funeral service took place at 2:00pm on Saturday September 6th with Pastor Jeff Bessey officiating. Burial followed in the St. Anthony Pentecostal Cemetery. Funeral Arrangements were entrusted to Kerry M. Fillatres Funeral Home, St. Anthony NL, Siobhan Mauger Funeral Director. 

PILGRIM, STANLEY

Passed away at the John M. Gray Center on the 13th of March 2014, in his 75th year, Mr. Stanley Pilgrim of Main Brook. Stanley leaves to mourn his spouse Shirley, his daughters Alice (Glenn), Conni9e(Rodger), Belinda (Gilles), grand children Gregory (Tracey), Shawn, Ryan, Gillian, Amy. his brothers Leander (Isabella), Herman (Gladys), Mervin (Wavey), Melvin (Karen), sisters Alice (Kenneth), Drucella (Douglas), Stella (Dennis), Elsie (Alwyn), Cassie (Tom), Belinda (Brian), Triffie (Edward). Stanley lived to see the passing of his father Benjamin, mother Bessie and Daughter Bonnie.the visitation was held at the Bethel Pentecostal Church in Main brook, form which the funeral service was held on the 17th of march with pastor Reginald Skinner Officiating, burial followed in the Church cemetery in main brook. funeral arangments where entrusted to Kerry M. WEIR, GARLAND WILSON

Passed away into peaceful rest at St. Clare’s Mercy Hospital in St. Johns on the 14th of October2013 after a struggle with illness, Mr. Garland Wilson Weir of Roddickton in his 67th year. Garland leaves behind with a lifetime of loving memories his wife of 37 years Patricia, his son David (Annie-Mae), Daughter Helga (Scott Parsons), grandson Jordan Weir, Granddaughter Amber Weir, Four sisters and One Brother. The Visitation was held at the Calvary Pentecostal Temple in Roddickton, from which the funeral service took place at 2:00pm on the Saturday October 19, 2013 with pastor G. B. Pinksen officiating. BESSEY, GRETA DELORES

Passed peacefully away at the John M. Gray Center on the 5th day of September 2013. Mrs. Greta Bessey of Ship Cove was in her 91st year. She leaves to mourn her sons Roland and Ernest, Daughters Joyce, Hazel(Garland), and Elaine (Gary), her beloved Grandchildren Tony, Debbie, Shawn, Melva, Perry, Tiffany, Kim Decker, Sheldon, Kimberly, and Sheri,  and Six Great Grand-children, Brother Samuel  (Neva)Decker as well as a large circle of family and friends. She was predeceased by her husband Reginald Bessey,  her parents George and May, granddaughter Sheri Smith, Brothers Kalman and Lloyd, sisters Gladys, Vera, and Madge. Visitation was held at the Pentecostal church in Ship cove, from which the funeral service was held at 2:00pm on the 7th of September 2013 with pastor Tony Roberts Officiating. ELLSWORTH, DENIKA "ANGLE"

Taken from this life at the young age of 26, Ms. Denika “Angle” Ellsworth of Englee, at the Health Science Center in St. John’s on the 13th of July 2013.
