LYONS, JAMES

It is with great sadness that the family of the late James Scott Lyons announce his passing on June 26, 2024, at the age of 44. Left to mourn with fond and loving memories are his wife Heidi, his children Madisyn and Caleb; mother Sharlene Martin; father and step-mother David & Therese Lyons; mother and father in law Wilson & Marjorie Budden; His sister Jennifer(Matt); stepbrother Jamie(Jennifer); stepsister Jennifer(Darrell); brother in law Christopher(Judy). His nephew Joe; nieces Erica, Kaleigh, Julia, Abbegayle, Amelia & Kaitlyn.  He will be sadly missed by his energetic and loving pet Champ! James was a strong man, demonstrated by his perseverance and faith throughout his illness. He loved his family immeasurably, his faith in God and the Edmonton Oilers.  He served in the RCAF as an air traffic controller and after 21 1/2 years of service, he moved to Gander, NL with his family to start a new career with NAV CANADA. He will be missed by all who knew him.

A public visitation will be held at Calvary Pentecostal Church in Roddickton, NL on July 5 between 2 and 4 PM and 7 and 9 PM.

Funeral service for James will be held at 2 pm on Saturday, July 6th, 2024, at Calvary Pentecostal Church, Roddickton, NL. Burial will follow at the Calvary Pentecostal Cemetery.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the wonderful staff at Health Sciences Center who cared for James during his time there. Sincere thanks go out to all those who offered prayers, support and hospitality during this difficult time.

COOMBS, HOWARD

1941-2023

We are saddened to announce the passing of Howard at the John M Gray home on July 4 at the age of 82.

He lived in Plum Point all his life and worked at a garage and as a school bus driver. He was a backhoe operator and dug many water lines on this coast.

He leaves to mourn his wife Joyce, daughters Angela, Jocelyn and Lottie, sons Foch and Sandy, their spouses, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

He is predeceased by mother Una and son Alan, in-laws Garland and Caroline Samson.

Visitation to take place from the Church of the Advent in Plum Point beginning the evening of Thursday, July 6, 2023 and will continue on Friday, July 7, 2023 with the family service to take place at 8:00 pm. The funeral will be held at 10:30 AM on Saturday, July 8, 2023 with Rev. Coates officiating. Interment to follow.

GIBBONS, RICK

In remembering Rick Gibbons, we say our goodbyes with great sadness. Rick Gibbons, 53, of Plum Point passed away peacefully in St. Clare‘s Mercy Hospital, St. John’s on Thursday July 28, 2022. He was surrounded by many of his loving family and friends. Rick was born on April 30th, 1969 in Flowers Cove, he was the son of Noel Gibbons and Jane Pittman. Rick spent his life running the family business with his brother, Gary Gibbons. He began working at Young’s Home Hardware and later took over as co-manager. Rick worked andran the store for his whole life, with his highschool sweetheart, Roxanne, by his side through it all. Rick had a passion for music and cooking and was known for his love of animals, especially his pet dogs. Left to mourn peacefully by his loving wife Roxanne Gibbons of 21 years, his two daughters, Hailey Gibbons and Vanessa Gibbons, his brother Gary Gibbons (Rupa), his mother, Jane Pittman, his father Noel Gibbons (Sophia), his step-sisters, Betty Genge (Todd), Allison Chambers, his step-brother, Michael Pittman (Tina), his in-laws, Joanne Sinnicks (Arthur), Lorna Sinnicks (Paul), Jake Sinnicks (Linda), his nieces, Alexis Genge, Emily Pittman, Kaitlyn Genge, Hope Gibbons and Jacey, nephews, Dylan Sinnicks, Brandon Sinnicks, Dillon Gibbons, Ryan Sinnicks, Matthew Gould, Evan Pittman and Nicholas Gould, as well as his many cousins and friends. He was predeceased by his grandmother and grandfather Gibbons (Norman and MaryJane), and grandmother and grandfather Young (Wallace and Elizabeth) and his stepfather Jim Pittman. The family service will be held at the Plum Point Church on Wednesday, August 3, 2022 at 7:00pm. The funeral will be held on Thursday August 4, 2022 at 11:00am. The Gibbons family will be there to welcome all friends and relatives.

GENGE, STEWARD

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Steward Genge who passed away July 30,2022 at his family residence in Anchor Point surrounded by his loving and devoted family at the age of 76 years.
Steward leaves to mourn with fond and precious memories, his wife of 55 years Dorcas, his daughter Easta (Dan), his son Rick (Crystal) his pride and joy his grandchildren,
Malcolm (Caylee), Ricki and Lauren as well as a large circle of relatives and friends.

WHITEWAY, EDWARD

July 23 1951 – July 28 2022 

It is with great sadness that the family of the late Edward Whiteway Sr. of St. Julien’s/Main Brook announce his passing at the age of 71 years. He leaves to mourn with fond and precious memories his loving partner Bonnie Burton, Stepdaughter Ashley (Sarah), Siblings Lillian (Ed), Anne (Wayne), Gordon (Laverne), Rose (Kevin), Ken (Regina), Daphne (Dwayne), Sharon (Roy), Cora (Jeff), Jason (Krista), sister-in law Jackie as well as a large circle of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.  

He was predeceased by his parents Maude and John, brother Kevin and sisters Phyllis and Joan. 

Big Ed, as he was mainly known, enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He especially enjoyed visits from Ashley and Sarah. He had a big heart and would give the shirt off his back. His great sense of humor drew people to him. He loved to make people laugh and could cook up a delicious hot Sunday dinner.

it is with deepest sadness that the family of the late Virtue Parrill of Pines Cove announce her passing on July 18th, 2021 at the strait of Belle Isle Health Center in Flowers Cove, NL at the age of 78 years. She will be sadly missed by her children Clayton and Cedric (Cara); Grandchildren Cody, Dallas (Haley), Christian (Jessica), Cadie; Great Grandchildren Jake and Tommy; Siblings Nicholas, Olive, Chris (Shirley), Thamsie (Wallace), Hughie (Marie), Fred (Melvina), Maggie (Edmund), Patsy (Windsor), Barry (Ruby) and Susie (Scott), as well as her nieces, Nephews, extended family, Friends and her “Special Mothers” at the Ivy Durley place. Virtue was predeceased by her husband George Parrill, her parents Uriah and Mary Elizabeth Hughes, her sisters; Nancy, Velma, Dorothy and Olga, brother in law David Noseworthy and Sister in law Marjorie Hughes.

The family would like to send special thanks to the staff at the Ivy Durley Place and to her sisters Maggie Hughes, Patsy Hughes and Susie Macey for their tremendous kindness and exceptional care of mom when we couldn’t be home.

Visitation will be held at the St. Andrews Parish in Lover Cove on Tuesday July 20th between 8 and 10pm and Wednesday, July 21st between 10am and 12 noon followed by her celebration of life at 2pm with Revered Deacon Vernon Short Officiating. Passed away into peace on the 3rd of July, 2021 at the Charles S. Curtis Memorial Hospital in St. Anthony NL. PILGRIM, IVAN MAXWELL WAYNE

it is with great sadness that the family of the late Ivan Pilgrim announce his passing on September 8th, 2020, at the Carbonear General Hospital at the age of 65 years old with his family at his side. Ivan’s funeral will take place at the Salvation Army Church on July 20, 2021 at 2pm. Burial will follow in the St. Anthony Bight Cemetery. Left to mourn his passing are his Beloved Wife Yvonne White, Children; Mike (Kendell) Pilgrim, Tammy Earle (Bryce Coombs) and Jamie Pilgrim, Grandchildren; Colby Coombs, Amber Dyson and Kaiden Czopko. his siblings; Eugene Pilgrim, Kye Pilgrim, Karen Pilgrim, Glenda Pilgrim, Wendy Pilgrim, June Pilgrim, Betty Pilgrim, Gladys Pilgrim and Tobias Pilgrim. Ivan was predeceased by his parents Johnathan and Anne Pilgrim and his sister Goldie Pilgrim.

RANDELL, MANUEL THOMAS

Manuel Thomas Randell was the son of Christopher and Jenneth Randell. He was born at Hooping Harbour on December 1st, 1952. the family resettled to Bide Arm in 1969. After resettlement during his young years, Manuel Moved to St. John’s where he worked at a metal fabrication shop. in 1974 Manuel became a dad for the first time when his daughter Beverley Lane was born Beverley lives in fort MacMurray and could not be here today due to Covid-19 Restrictions. in 1978 Manuel moved back to Bide Arm, sometime after he went fishing on the Ronald and Doreen, with well known local fisherman Mr. Herbert Pittman, it was around this time that Manuel Started dating Gloria Randell of Englee. During their 39 years together, Manuel and Gloria Raised a family of one daughter Robyn Randell and one son Lucas Randell. when his employment with Mr. Pittman ended, Manuel partnered with Eddie and Terry Randell to build their own boat. they fished together for some time and Manuel left the fishing industry with the start of the Cod moratorium in 1992.

in 2000 he began working as a welder at Marine Service Center in Englee, he continued in the employment of Mr. Hubert Randell until he became ill in June of 2019 while working at the Wabash airport.

Manuel’s health continued to deteriorate and on July 3rd of 2020 he was admitted to Charles S. Curtis Memorial hospital at St. Anthony. he passed peacefully away at 12:30 am on Saturday July 11th, 2020 surrounded by his family.

the visitation and funeral service for Manuel was held at the Apostolic Faith Church in Bide Arm on July 13th, 2020 with pastor Howard Canning officiating, burial followed in the community cemetery. EDISON, MARTHA ALICE

Martha Alice (Tucker) Edison was born to Thomas and Eliza of Ship Cove, NL on Dec. 13, 1926. Alice married the love of her life Jacob Edison of Hay Cove on Sept. 28th, 1948, where together they raised their family. Allie, As she was affectionately called by Jake, loved her children and grandchildren and they both Enjoyed visits form them all. When Jake passed away in 1992 she moved to Griquet and lived with her daughters until moving into Shirley’s haven in 2013. Alice enjoyed the simple pleasure in life, she cherished every gift someone gave her. She loved going for rides in car and looked forward to her Sunday car rides with her son John. Her favourite pass time was knitting, she would knit a baby sweater for anyone she knew that was having a baby. She loved her nighttime lunch of cheesies and the occasional lunch at Herb’s. Alice always had a smile and never had a bad word to say about anyone. Alice leaves to mourn with cherished memories her daughters Inice (Francis), Gloria (Albert), Deborah (Duncan), Daisy, Dora (Bob), Son Ramsey, Daughter in law Bessie, 14 Grandchildren and 17 Great grandchildren as well as Sister, Delilah. Alice was predeceased by her father Thomas, mother Eliza, husband Jacob and son John. The memorial service was held at Kerry M. Fillatres Funeral Home in St. Anthony NL with Rev. John McGonigle Officiating, Burial followed the Service at the Community Cemetery in L’anse Aux Meadows. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Kerry M.
