HOPKINS, MELINDA CATHY

August 22, 1968 - January 1, 2019

Heaven gained a precious angel when Melinda Cathy Hopkins (nee Randell) of Englee passed away in the comfort of her home in January 1, 2019 after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Melinda was very well known in the community and surrounding are having her own hair salon for over 20 years. Her family was her whole world and she put them above all else. She met the love of her life Kevin in June 1987 only to marry him a short time later on May 21, 1988, together they built a loving home and family with whom she deeply cherished. Left here to mourn is husband of 30 years Kevin; daughter Aimee; son Aaron; Parents Norman and Mae Randell; sister Juanita(Roy); brothers Ricky (Havaliene) and David(Daphne); Parents-in-law Scott and Shirley Hopkins; sisters-in-law Bonnie (Derrick) and Kathy (Perry), as well as a large circle of extended family and friends. Special thanks to Bonnie Decker and Rhonda Hicks at the Chemo unit in St. Anthony for all their care and support over the last 4 years. Visitation will be held from Salvation Army Church in Englee beginning the evening of Thursday, January 3, 2018 and will continue until the funeral on Saturday, January 5th, 2019 at 2:00 pm with Major Simms officiating. FILLIER, REGINALD HARVEY

Passed peacefully away at the John M. Gray Centre on the 12th day of February 2018. Mr. Reginald H. Fillier of Englee was in his 88th year. He leaves to mourn with cherished and loving memories; Sons David (Mary); Jim (Monica); Garry (Karen); Daughters Shirley (Bill) Humby; Hilda (Shane) Pilgrim; Evelyn (Della Demoss); Thirteen Grandchildren, Nine Great Grandchildren; Brother Alvin (Shirley) Fillier - as well as a large circle of relatives and friends. He was predeceased his Wife Lucy; parents Aubrey and Patience Fillier; sisters Ida (Bill) Ivany, Gladys (Joe) Pollicara, Daisy (John) Newman; Brothers Sandy (Alexander) Fillier (Dulcie), Clancy Fillier (Ethel). Visitation took place from the Salvation Army Church in Englee on the 14th day of February followed through until the funeral service which took place at 2:00 pm on the 16th day of February 2018. BURTON, ROY NATHANIEL

Roy N. Burton of Englee, a well respected and loved member of the community passed away at Curtis Memorial Hospital at the age of 73. He is survived by his wife Ivy, Daughter Bonnie (Terry), Son Bob (Wanda), Son Boyd, Son Trevor (Alicia). Grandchildren Brandon, Adam, Andrew, Shania, Cody, Mackenzie, Stephan Burton and Ryder. Great grandchildren Kaden and Bree. Brother Wilson, Lewis, Lorne. Sisters Joyce, Elsie, Verley, Bonetta, Alice, Marilyn. He is predeceased by his parents Hayward and Priscilla (Paddock). Visitation will be held at Englee Salvation Army church from 2 to 4 pm (public) 7 - 9 pm (family only) on Tuesday 10 Oct 17. Funeral service is under direction of Salvation Army ministers Bruce and Judy Giles to be held on Wednesday 11 Oct 17 @ 2 pm followed with burial at Salvation ArmyCemetery. A reception celebrating his life will be held at the Salvation Army church following the burial for family and extended family. Donations can be made to the charity of your choice. FILLIER - HOPKINS, MELVINA GLADYS JUILA

Passed peacefully away on Tuesday, June 6th 2017 at Curtis Memorial Hospital in St. Anthony, NL at 73 years of age.

She is predeceased by Husbands Stanley Fillier and Roy Hopkins, Parents Chesley and Flossie Cassell, Brother’s Harrison and David Cassell.

Left to mourn her passing with fond and loving memories are her Children; Marlene (Wayne), Derrick (Bonnie), Jackie (Dennis), Debbie (Dean), Pauline (Joshua), and Connie (Jason), eleven Grand Children, four Great Grand Children, two Sisters, two Brother’s, Nieces, Nephews, and a large circle of Family and Friends.

Public visitation will take place on Friday and Saturday, June 9th and 10th from 2-5PM and 7-9PM at Salvation Army Citadel in Englee, NL.

Funeral service will take place on Sunday, June 11th 2PM at the Salvation Army Church in Englee and the internment will take place at the Salvation Army cemetery in Englee. funeral arangments are entrusted to Kerry M. COMPTON, ALLAN HENRY

Passed away on December 5, 2016 at Charles S. Curtis Memorial Hospital with his family by his side at the age of 87 years. Allan was born on March 25, 1929 to the late Augustus and Maggie (Tucker) Compton. On March 25, 1953, he married Olive Hopkins, together they had seven children; Joan, Robert (Deceased), Yvonne, Bernice, Jean, Clyde, and Lesa as well as their special granddaughter Connie. Allan worked in his younger days in the woods from cutting wood to cook’s helper. In his later years he worked with the Department of Transportation, grading roads and plowing snow until retiring in 1989. He was very well known in all the community, as well as Roddickton and surrounding areas. He leaves to mourn his Wife Olive of 63 years, daughters Joan (Tony), Yvonne (Rudy), Bernice (Edmond), Jean (Harold), Lesa (Fergie), Connie (Jeff), Son Clyde (Deloris), eleven grandchildren, ten greatgrandchildren, three sisters, two brothers, daughter-in-law Sharon Compton, his special homecare worker “Sunbeam”, seven brothers-in-law and a sister-in-law along with many nieces, nephews, and friends. No one was a stranger to “Fadder.” He was predeceased by his son Robert. - “Rock Of Ages, Cleft For Me, Let me hide myself in thee” Visitation was held at the Salvation Army Church in Englee from where the funeral service was held at 2:00 pm on December 8, 2016 with Major Collins officiating. RANDELL, CECIL

Passed away peacefully at Curtis Memorial Hospital in St. Anthony on October 22, 2016 at the age of 83 years. Cecil was born to Joshua and Sophia Randell on December 17, 1932 in Williamsport, NL. He married Ida Randell on November 10, 1952 and they had five children; Barbara, Garry, Wayne, Jerry, and Barry. Keith was born to Barbara and Cecil, and Ida raised him as their own. Cecil and Ida resettled their family from Williamsport in 1969. They moved to Bide Arm for two years and then to Englee in 1971, where they built their home and raised their family. Cecil was a man who could put his hand to any job, a proper jack of all trades. There was no job that he would not take on. He was a home builder and also a boat builder. Over the years he worked on the whale plant, a whale boat, he sawed logs and even spent two years as a teacher. However, fishing was his calling. He leaves to mourn his Wife Ida, Daughter Barbara, Sons Garry (Brenda), Wayne (Marlene), Jerry, Barry (Kathy), Keith (Nadine) as well as six grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, as well as a large circle of family and friends. Cecil was predeceased by his parents, three brothers and one sister. He was the last of his family. Cecil slipped peacefully away into the presence of the Lord on October 22 at the St. Anthony Hospital. He will be sadly missed by all his family and friends. Visitation was held at the Salvation Army Church in Englee from where the funeral service was held on Wednesday, October 26, 2016 with Major Collins officiating. Interment followed. SIMMS, FANNIE

Passed away peacefully at Curtis Memorial Hospital in St. Anthony at the age of 87 years. Fannie Simms was born on March 14. 1929 to William and Annie Hancock of Roddickton. On December 14, 1944 she was married to Frederick Simms of Woodstock, NL and blessed with seven children. Fannie was a hard worked and for a number of years worked at the local fish plant. She was also a faithful member of LOBA for many years. Fannie was widowed at an early age (45) but continued to carry out her regular duties of running a home and raising a family alone. She leaves to mourn with fond and loving memories, her children Joy (Pleman) Weir, Grant (Margaret), Wilfred (Wavey), David (Judy), Shirley (Hedley) Randell, and Guy (Donna). She also leaves seventeen grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great grandchildren; Sisters Hazel Brenton, Irene Jacobs, Rowena Hopkins and a large circle of family and friends. She was predeceased by her husband Frederick Simms and son George. Visitation was held at the Salvation Army Church in Englee from where the funeral service was held on October 19th, 2016 with Major Maurice Collins officiating. Interment followed. COMPTON, JOHN THOMAS

John loved to fish and spending time with his family. Especially his son, daughter and grandchildren. His family was his life. During his life, John was a fisherman and worked many years at the Salt Fish Store. He also framed homes. John was also a member of the Orange Lodge, Pillar of the community and a member of the Salvation Army Englee Corps Men’s Fellowship. Mr. John Thomas Compton of Englee passed away at the Lion’s Manor Nursing Home in Portugal Cove, NL on the 17th day of September 2016 at the age of 74 years. HE leaves to mourn with fond and loving memoires his Daughter Kim (Christopher) Martel of Sudbury, ON; Son Jamie(Sherry) of Paradise, NL; Grandchildren Samantha(Sudbury), Sabrina(Sudbury), Brandon(King’s Point), Rebecca(Springdale), Kyle(Paradise); Great Grandchildren Carter, Drayden, Roman of Sudbury, ON; Mia, and Cooper of King’s Point, Brothers Seymore(Miriam) of Englee; Roland(Englee); Francis(Stella) of Englee; Lloyd(Englee); Dave(Kathy) of Cape Brenton; George(Cheryl) of Cape Brenton; and Allan(Angela) of Englee; Sisters Evelyn Harklewood(Dayton, Ohio); Mable(Joe) Callahan of St. John’s; and Mary(Frank) Spence of Nova Scotia as well as a large circle of relatives and friends. HE was predeceased by his parents Archibald and Minnie Compton. Visitation was held at the Salvation Army Citadel In Englee from which the funeral service was held at 2:00pm on the 21st day of September 2016 with Pastor Maurice Collins officiating. CANNING, MARGUERITE DELFINE

Passed away on August 28, 2016 at Charles Curtis Memorial Hospital at the age of 84 years. Marguerite was born on August 29, 1932 to the late Jonas and Tamer Hopkins. On April 25, 1952 she married the love of her life, Lesley Canning. Together they had one son, Woodrow. Marguerite worked at the fish plant for many years but her greatest passion was her love for people. She lived her life as a true servant of God. She would put everyone’s concerns and needs above her own. Many cards were sent and thousands of telephone calls made to people who were sick. Heaven has won another angel! She leaves to mourn her husband Lesley, son Woodrow (Susan), four Grandchildren, and ten Great-grandchildren, Four Sisters, and Three Brothers; along with a large number of family and friends. She is predeceased by her parents, three brothers, and three sisters. Visitation was held at the Salvation Army Church in Englee from where the funeral took place on Thursday, September 1st, 2016 at 2:00pm with Lts. Randy and Cathy Shears officiating. RANDELL, NORMAN

Passed away on July 14, 2016 at the John M Gray Center in St. Anthony at the age of 83 years. Norman was born on October 7, 1932 to the late Matthew & Bertha Randell of Whooping Harbour. He married the love of his life, Matilda Compton of Englee on November 15th, 1955. Together they raised 7 children, Wanda, Gideon (Judy), Ambrose, Vay (Christine), David (Sharon), Nelson (Deceased) and Osborne (Roxanne). Norman began his working career as a fisherman. He did this for many years and during the winter months he was employed by Bowaters and other companies as a cook. He spent several years cooking on the coastal boats and the whaling plant in Williamsport.  Norman leaves to mourn 6 children, 14 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, 1 half-sister Edith Newman (Wilfred), 1 son in law Kevin and daughter in law Gloria and a large number of close family and friends. He is predeceased by his wife, his son, his parents, 2 brothers and 2 half-brothers. Visitation was held at the Salvation Army Church in Englee from where the funeral was held on Monday, July 18, 2016 with Majors Ross and Brenda Bungay officiating. Interment followed in the Old Salvation Army Cemetery in Englee. In Lieu of flowers donation may be made to the family for distribution among local youth groups.
