SLADE, CHESTER ROY

November 12, 1944 - May 1, 2023

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Chester Roy Slade on May 1, 2023 at Charles S. Curtis Memorial Hospital, surrounded by family. Chester was born in St. Anthony on November 12, 1944, where he grew up. Chester was a nature lover and enjoyed the outdoors, picking berries, fishing, hiking, biking and skiing. He also enjoyed woodworking and carpentry work.

Leaving to mourn: his wife, Elsie, of 23 years: Son, Joshua, Step daughters: Tiffany McLean (Danny) and Deirdre Chambers (Elliot Ferguson). Siblings: Marjorie Patey (Eric), Keith, Christina Pynn (lan) and Juanita Beaufield (Guy), In-Laws; Ollie Coates, Lelvie Parrill (Joe), Dian Prowse, (Terenee), Fanny Hoddinott (Derek), Seymour Coates (Cora), Elizabeth Toope (Clyde), June Coates, Ernest Cull (Millicent) and Oswald Dyson (Joyce); Grandchildren: Samuel, Lucas. Kate and Grace; many loving Nieces & Nephews, Great Nieces & Nephews; Aunts, Uncles, Cousins & Friends, especially Pearce Patey and Tom Hancock, who have always been there for him.

Chester is pre-deceased by his parents: Joseph and Rita Slade, brother, Ronald, and sisters, Greta Cull and Rosie Dyson; Mother & Father in Law, Lawrence & Martha Elizabeth Coates, and brother in law, Gideon Coates.

Many thanks to the staff of Curtis Memorial Hospital & the Health Science Center, who went above and beyond to make sure his stay was as comfortable as possible and were a huge support to the family.

Visitation to take place from Kerry M. Fillatre Funeral Home in St. Anthony on Thursday, April 4, 2023 from 11 am-12 pm, 2-4 pm and 7-8 pm with the family service taking place from 8-9 pm. The funeral service will take place from the United Church in St. Anthony on May 5, 2023 at 2:00 pm with Minnie Morris and Carol Roberts officiating. Interment to follow.

SLADE, ALFRED FRANK

May 13, 1930 - July 17, 2022

Frank was born on May 13, 1930 at Lushes Bight, Notre Dame Bay to John and Laura Slade. At the age of 4 Frank moved with his family to St. Anthony where he grew up. At an early age Frank started working on the Grenfell Mission and then later fishing on several different boats. He also had several jobs in his younger years at Goose Bay, Toronto and North Carolina.

While in North Carolina he almost got drafted into the US Army to fight in the Korean War. He had to decide between going in the US Army or returning to Canada, which he decided to return to Canada. On returning to Canada he met up with his buddy Don Penney in Toronto who was in the Canadian Army and he enlisted in the Canadian Army for the Korean War. Frank was a sergeant and paratrooper in the War. After the War Frank stayed in the military for a short time before being honourably discharged.

He worked for a short time in Toronto as a police officer before returning to Newfoundland and Labrador. Frank married Clara Patey on October 3, 1961 at Happy Valley/Goose Bay. He worked as an heavy equipment operator in Schefferville and Sagelak before returning to St. Anthony where he worked with Lundrigan’s on the roads being built on the Northern Peninsula. He then worked as the wharfinger at the government wharf in St. Anthony for many years before working as a commissioner at the airport until he retired.

In his younger years Frank loved hunting, fishing and out in boat. He was Lieutenant of the Canadian Rangers in St. Anthony for many years. He also loved animals especially his cats. Frank was a dedicated military man and this was evident to all who had a chance to talk to him.

Frank passed away on July 17, 2022 at the John M Gray Center at the age of 92 years.

He is survived by his Brother, Norman (Dorothy); Sisters, Maude (Jim) Delaney, Jessie (Bruce) Rye, Joyce Cull; Brothers in Law, Louden (Druscilla) Patey, Hedley (Marina) Patey, Ron (Pam) Patey, Ralph (Sally) Patey; Sisters in Law, Mary Slade, Kitty Slade, Victoria Marshall; Nephew, Jeffrey (Janette) Slade; Niece, Phyllis (Neil) Ireland; Close Friends Mary and William Patey as well as many other family members and friends.

He is predeceased by his Wife, Clara; Parents, John and Laura Slade; Brothers, Cyril Slade, Raymond Slade, Eric Slade; Sister, Marg Rickett; Brother in Law, Ron Cull, Robert Rickett; Sister in Law, Ellen Slade.

The family would like to thank the staffs of Shirley’s Haven Personal Care Home, Charles Curtis Hospital and John M Gray Centre for providing care and comfort over the past 4 years.

Public visitation to be held at Kerry M Fillatre Funeral Home in St. Anthony from 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm on Wednesday, July 20, 2022 and from 2-4 pm and 7-8 pm on Thursday, July 21, 2022. A private family visitation will take place on Thursday at 8:00 pm. The funeral service will be held from the St. Anthony United Church at 2:00 pm on Friday, July 22, 2022. Interment to follow. WALKER, EVELYN EDITH (nee Slade)

It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts, that our family announces the passing of Evelyn Walker on May 26, 2022, at the age of 93. At her passing she was surrounded by the love of her family and friends.

Evelyn was born in St. Anthony, NL in 1928, where she met and married Joe and lived most of her life. She worked tirelessly to obtain her medical librarian certificate and through her many years at the Grenfell Hospital she rose to be the medical records librarian, retiring in 1989.

At her passing Mom had many roles, Mother, Grandmother, Great Grandmother, Great Great Grandmother, Aunt, Sister and Friend. She was at her happiest when surrounded by her family and friends. When we would get together mom loved baking breads and pies, cooking all of our childhood favorites and playing a raucous game of “Bang”. Mom enjoyed knitting and many of us were fortunate enough to enjoy the warmth of her gunner mitts, wool socks, toques, chair booties and afghans.

Evelyn is survived by daughters Jean (Jim), Joan (Bill), Dona (Wilson), Linda (Bill), her daughter in law Marilyn, her sister Millicent and her very dear friend Rachel and her family. She is also survived by numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren and recently, her first great great grandchild, all of whom she loved and adored.

She was predeceased by her husband Joe, son Tony and 3 grandchildren, Andrea, Adam and David

Cremation has taken place. A service to celebrate Evelyn’s life will be held at a to be determined date in at Kerry M. Fillatre’s Funeral Home in St. Anthony NL as per her request where she will be laid to rest with those that passed before her.

In lieu of flowers etransfer donations can be made to the Grenfell Foundation at foundation.south@lghealth.ca. The money received will be used to purchase much needed equipment for the hospital.

SLADE, MAISIE MIRIAM

July 22, 1936 – April 15, 2020

It is with deep and profound sadness that the family of the late Maisie Slade of St. Anthony announce her sudden, but peaceful passing at the Charles S. Curtis Memorial Hospital at St. Anthony on April 15, 2020 at the age of 83. Left with a lifetime of precious and lasting memories are her children: Donna Hiscock (Robert), Terry Slade (Caren), Lorne Slade (Carol Ann); four grandchildren: Alison, Heather, Tara, and Jason; seven greatgrandchildren: Ethan, Aaron, Kai, John, Roman, Dominick, and Caroline; sisters-in-law, Pamela Sheppard (John) and Eileen Penney; special friends, Millicent Fowler, Stella Fowler, Hazel Colbourne and a wide circle of friends. She was predeceased by her husband Frederick, 2005, and daughter Judy, 2010; parents Willis and Edna Penney, her sister Adelaide, and her three brothers, Fred, Loomis and Steve. Due to COVID-19 Government Regulations, there will be no service at this time, with private interment on Friday, April, 17 at the United Church cemetery at St. Anthony. As expressions of sympathy, donations in her memory may be made to a charity of one’s choice.

SLADE, CLARA

Passed away January 15th, 2018 from the Charles S. Curtis Memorial Hospital in St. Anthony at the age of 82 years. Clara Slade was born on May 19, 1935 to William and Emma Patey of Pateyville. Clara grew up in Pateyville and later she began to work. She worked at a number of jobs beginning as the assistant cook at the Grenfell House. On October 3, 1961 she married Frank Slade in Happy Valley,and they recently celebrated 57 years of marriage. During those years she worked with Frank fishing as well as on the dock which Frank managed. Clara was a pleasant woman with a variety of interests. She was a member of the UCW, as well as a member of the Legion for more than 29 years. She loved her gardens and flowers as well as her cats.In younger years she accompanied Frank fishing, hunting and travelling. She enjoyed singing and card games as well as being with people. In the last few years she had a number of health problems which limited her activities, but which did not affect her smile. Clara passed peacefully away on January 15th. She is survived by her husband Frank, brothers Louden (Druscilla), Hedley (Marina) Ron (Pam), Ralph (Sally) and sister Victoria. She is also survived by her brothers in law Cyril, Eric (Ellen, deceased),and Norman (Dorothy) and sisters in law Jessie (Bruce), Maude (Jim), Mary Slade and Joyce (Ron), niece Phyllis (Neil) and nephew Jeffrey (Jeanette) and care giver Mary Patey as well as many other family members and friends. Visitation was held from Kerry M. Fillatre's Funeral Home in St. Anthony until the funeral on Friday, January 18th, 2018 at 2:00 pm from the St. Anthony United Church with Rev. John officiating.
