ELLIOTT, WILFORD THOMAS

Passed away on January 7, 2016 at 77 years of age. Wilfred Thomas Elliott was born on April 4, 1926 on Current Island to Absalom and Florence Elliott.  He, and his sister, Dora, were raised by their Dad, with the help of family, as their Mom had passed away when he was but 4 years old. He married Gladys Rachel Elliott on April 12, 1952 and they had 3 sons, Neil (Marie), Roy and Wayne (Bride). They had an old fashioned marriage, built on true respect, dedication, support and love for each other.  He was delighted to have 6 grandchildren, Christopher (Krista), Michelle (Greg), Allison, Kurt, Stephen and Adam and 3 Great-Granddaughters, Sophie, Kate and Isla. His early years were spent in Lock’s Cove until the community was resettled, at which time the move to St. Anthony became their home until Gladys passed away in 2013 at which time he chose to live the last 2 plus years of his life in CBS.  Wilfred and Gladys opened their home to everyone, whether it was for a cup of tea or a place to lay their head for the night.  He was both a ‘gentleman’ and a very ‘gentle man’, was respectful of others and others respected him.  He had a warm and generous spirit, a very private man, a strong individual, a loving person not only to his family but to his many friends and relatives, an adoring husband, a fair and strong father, a loving grandfather to his 6 grandchildren and a shining star to his great grandchildren.  He was a very wise man in the ways of the world and generously shared his thoughts and opinions on any subject. He was a loyal friend, a leader as ‘skipper’ to the crew he worked alongside of, devout to his religion, and steadfast in his principals. His love of the ocean was not only evident in the career he chose at sea for 52 years, but also in his retirement when he surprised everyone by falling in love with salmon fishing.  He was a very hard working man who passed his dedication to his work and family on to his own three sons.  He was very proud of his ‘boys’ and they very proud of him. There was no such word in his vocabulary as it can’t be done and working from sun up (sometimes before sun up) to sun down was just a normal part of his life.  Hard work was his motto and family was his treasure.  Dad, you can now Rest in Peace- your day’s work is done. The Memorial Service took place on Thursday, May 12, 2016 at St. Mary's Anglican Church in St. Anthony with Rev. Dianne Smith officiating. Interment to follow at a later date. Funeral Arrangements entrusted to Kerry M. Fillatre's Funeral Home, St. Anthony and Roddickton, Lee Nippard Funeral Director.
