Mary Jane (Strangemore) Burt was born in Ireland Bight, on June 26, 1924, one of the eight children born to Esau and Dorcas (Powell) Strangemore. She was raised in Ireland Bight, moving to St. Anthony in 1948. Here she met her life companion William (Bill) Burt. They were married on January 16, 1952 .The two of them began their life career with the International Grenfell Association and Grenfell Regional Health Services. Mary Jane and Bill were an inseparable team who spent 16 years as the caretakers of Grenfell House, before moving on to careers within the hospital. Mary Jane was an active, hardworking woman who always had time for a bit of fun and a laugh and she was well known for speaking her mind She and Bill did not have any children of their own but were surrogate parents to their many nieces and nephews. She was passionately devoted to her work with the Grenfell Association and her family . She was a good friend to all who came to know her, enjoyed company, a cup of tea and a story or two. Her health began to fail in the last number of months and she passed peacefully away on December 15th . She is survived by two brothers, Job (Elizabeth) and Norman (Myra), her loved nieces and nephews as well as sisters-in law Ethel, Dora, Florence (Paul), Vera and Violet and her special niece Gail Hancock (Phil), as well as many, many close and dear friends. She was predeceased by her husband Bill, parents Esau and Dorcas, sisters Blanche and Lucinda and brothers Ralph, Jeremiah and Clifford. She will be sadly missed. Funeral service to take place from the St. Anthony United Church on Friday, December 17, 2021 at 10:00 am with Rev. John McGonigle officiating. Interment to follow. BURT, ROY JAMES
Passed away at Charles S. Curtis Memorial Hospital in St. Anthony on January 4, 2016 at the age of 56 years. Roy James Burt was born in St. Anthony on May 22nd, 1960 to the proud parents of Cecil and Dora Burt and graduated Harriott Curtis Collegiate in 1978. On June 17th, 1989 Roy married the love of his life, Joyce Seaward and on June 5th, 1998 they were blessed with the birth of their beautiful daughter Leanne Jessica and in 2009 Roy’s devoted four legged puppy Elbee joined their family. Roy was a devoted husband, amazing father, loving son, brother and a true friend to all who knew him. Roy worked for a number of years with Fishery Products and in 2010 he completed a Heavy Equipment Operator course and was employed as a Distributor with Professional Business Solutions/ Browning Harvey. Roy enjoyed the great outdoors and would always participate in such things as snowmobiling, fishing and hunting. Roy’s greatest love was hockey and he became a valuable player while attending school and later joined a senior league. Roy is predeceased by his parents Dora and Cecil Burt. He will be sadly missed by his family, wife Joyce, daughter Leanne, loyal companion Elbee, Mother in Law Nita, Brothers-Albert (Jo), Gary (Irene), Gus (Cora), Ern, Benson (Daphne) Sister Dorothy (Dennis), Brothers in law-Selwyn (Ivy) Charles (Gaye), Carl (Selma), Guy ( Karen), Sisters in law Marilyn, Eva (Riley) 22 nieces and nephews, Aunt Linda Tucker(Roy) Uncle Henry Kelloway (Gladys) cousins and a large circle of friends. Visitation was held at the Salvation Army Church in St. Anthony from where the funeral took place on January 7, 2016 at 2:00 pm with Captain Brown officiating. Interment followed. BURT, CECIL FRANCIS
Cecil Francis Burt was born in St. Anthony on October 9, 1930 to Winnifred and James Burt. He has one son (Roy) and helped raise 6 step children. Left with their memories are Son Roy (Joyce), Granddaughter Leanne, 6 step-children – Albert (Jo), Gary (Irene), Dorothy (Dennis), Gus (Cora), Ern, Benson (Daphne), Effie McLean & family as well as a large circle of other relatives & friends. He is predeceased by his first wife Dora (Simms) Burt and his second wife Dorothy (Hancock) Burt, his parents, Brother Reuben Burt and Sisters Minnie and Mary-Ann. Visitation was held at the funeral home in St. Anthony after which the funeral service was held on Monday December 28th, 2015 at 2:00pm with Major Denzel Baggs officiating. Interment followed at the church cemetery. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Kerry M. Fillatre’s Funeral Homes, St. Anthony and Roddickton, Lee Nippard Funeral Director.

Passed away peacefully at the Charles S. Curtis Memorial Hospital on the 30th of January 2015, Mrs. Blanche Effie Burt of St. Anthony in her 93rd year. Blanche leaves to mourn her loss; her daughter Marilyn, grandchildren Christopher and Heidi, Special nephew/niece Roland and Effie, Special Niece/ Husband Gloria and Doug, Special nephew/ Wife Vince and Jessie, Brother in law Cecil Burt, special friends Evelyn Walker and Vera Colbourne. She is predeceased by her Husband Reuben, Son in law Tony, Parents William and Susan Coates, brothers Nathaniel Coates, John Thomas Coates, William Coates, Gorden Coates, Thomas Coates and Philip Coates, Sisters Alice Mitchelmore, Rebecca Diamond, Lorie Parrill, Margaret Coates, Mary Elizabeth Caines, Eliza McLean, Sarah Jane Gibbons and Amy McLean, In laws James and Winnifred Burt, Sister in laws Minnie Compton and Mary Ann Patey. Visitation was held at the Funeral home in St. Anthony, after which the Funeral Service took place at the Salvation army Church in St. Anthony at 2:00pm on Wednesday February 4th, 2014 with Major Dinzel Baggs Officiating.
