HUMBY, ELI GEORGE

December 2, 1931 - February 13, 2022

Eli George Humby, known as George Humby, was born on December 2nd, 1931, in St. Lunaire - Griquet, to Edward and Jessie Humby. They moved to Roddickton in the early 1950’s, so his father could work in the woods for a lumber company. At a young age he started working in the woods for Bowater Pulp and Paper as a wood cutter. After working in the woods for about 10 years he started a small general store for the area. He then ventured to Goose Bay with his good friend Earl Pilgrim to work on the military base driving forklift. His desire was to move back to Roddickton so after a few years they moved back, and he started Imperial oil which he operated for 34 years.

While still running the oil business he started his own lumber business “Northern Lumber Company” where he employed 419 men from the area. In 1985 he started a general store in town known as E.G Humby and Sons. This store sadly burned after only 5 years in business, but they relocated to a new location which they ran until 1997. He was always concerned about local jobs and went to great lengths to create jobs in the local area. In retirement he was always around to help his three sons out in any way he could. He enjoyed spending time with his family and good chats with his friends at the coffee shop. In 1960 he married Alma Lillian Harris and they had three sons, Paul, Peter & Perrin. They were also blessed with eight (8) grandchildren and six (6) great-grandchildren. George’s greatest pleasure was to give to others as God blessed him. George blessed many people that only God knew about.

He leaves to mourn, his Wife, Alma Lillian (Harris); Children, Paul (Elaine), Peter (Irena), Perrin (Renee); Grandchildren, Kenneth (Shea), Kandace (Jason Schroeder), Daniel, Maria, George, David, Cody and Connor; Great Grandchildren, Jackson, Lincoln, Katie, Lillie, Mia, Ivey; Siblings, Emma (Cluney), Alfred Leonard (Hazel). George also leaves to mourn a large circle of family and friends.

He is predeceased by his Parents; Edward (Sr) & Jessie (Adams) Humby; Brothers, Edward (Jr), Herbert, Maxwell; Sisters, Susie (Hancock), Ella (Gill), Olive (Rose), Bernetta (Canning).

Public visitation will be held at the Pentecostal Church in Roddickton form 6-9 pm on Wednesday, February 16th, followed by the funeral service at 2:00 pm on February 17th 2022 with Pastor Paddock officiating. Interment to follow. Funeral arrangements entrusted to Kerry M. Fillatre Funeral Home, St. Anthony and Roddickton, Lee Nippard, Funeral Director.

HUNT, DAVID LEONARD

Dave was born to Barbara and Laco Hunt on July 19, 1943 in Brighton, England. After the war, the family settled in Canada where his father took a job with the Federal Government. As a result of this, Dave spent several years in Canada’s Arctic when he was young. Maybe it was his time there that gave him love of the north as he was passionate about Labrador. After college, Dave took a job with the Hudson’s Bay Company spending time in the company’s northern posts in Newfoundland and Labrador, Ontario, and Quebec. His desire to live in Labrador and his wish to start his own business made him eventually leave the Hudson’s Bay Company and he began his career as an entrepreneur in Goose Bay. His business included a furniture store, a television and cable business, and an office supply store. Dave was also very active with the Rotary Club and the Labrador North Chamber of Commerce, serving a term as President. He was a great advocate for Labrador and took every opportunity to promote and connect businesses in Central Labrador to other Northern regions through conferences and trade shows. In the late 1970’s Dave met his life’s partner, Bella Hodge and her family became his family. Dave was so proud to be called “Pop” by the grandchildren; they were his pride and joy. He will be forever missed by all who knew and loved him.  He leaves to mourn his partner Bella Hodge; Step-Children Dana (Donna), Lyndon (Mary), Stephanie Jill (Monty), Stanley John, and Gina Belle (Adrian); Grandchildren Elizabeth, Ian, Conor, Ciara, Anakin, Brady, and Jennifer; Great-Grandchild Journey; Brother Peter (Joyce); Cousin Benita and Don Marshall (Queensland, Australia) as well as a large circle of extended family and friends. He was predeceased by his parents Laco and Barbara Hunt. The funeral took place from the St. Anthony United Church on September 15. 2016 with Rev. Dinesh Gomes and Rev. Katie Flynn officiating. Funeral arrangements entrusted to Kerry M. Fillatre’s Funeral Homes, St. Anthony and Roddickton, Lee Nippard Funeral Director. On September 23, 2016 an additional memorial service will take place in Goose Bay from 2-4 pm from the Anglican Church. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to St. Mary’s Anglican Church, St. Anthony or the St. Anthony United Church.
