LAWRENCE, JOSEPH HORATIO

Born in Port Aux Basques on the 14th of March in 1927 to parents Joseph James and Julia Ann,  Joseph lived a full life with many accomplishments and pastimes, including the Newfoundland Rangers, Bowaters (as a Postmaster), U.S. Air force (as a Supply Officer), Canadian Marconi, School Superintendant, and Hospital Administrator, activates in the Lions Club, Athletic Club, Mason Lodge, town Mayor and Air Cadets. Joseph passed away into peace on the 6th of May, 2014 at the Charles S. Curtis Memorial Hospital in St. Anthony with his family by his side in his 87th year. Left to mourn are his loving Wife of 65 years Eva Sulley, his 2 sons Orville and Dennis, 5 Grandchildren Matthew Joseph, Ryan Everett, Reginald Joseph, Olivia Marie, Julia Sarah Anne, Sisters in Law Zelda Hillier, Gloria Marshall and Emily Sully. Close family, Don and Linda Loder, Lee Hillier and Shirley Farrell, Brother Fred Lawrence and Sisters Shirley Yard and Clarinda Lawrence. Joseph was predeceased by his parents Joseph James, Mother Julia Ann, Brothers Reginald and Jim, as well as sisters Classie, Violet, Tulia and Lillian. Visitation was held at The Funeral Home in St. Anthony, Followed by the Funeral Service at the St. Anthony United Church with Rev. John McGonigle officiating. Burial followed the service at the Fishing Point Cemetery in St. Anthony. Funeral Arrangements Were entrusted to Kerry M. COLES, WALLACE

Wallace Coles was born on March 10, 1920 in Sandy Cove to Archibald & Eliza Coles.

He was a war veteran who served in World War II for 3 years and 8 months. He showed great pride for his country. After returning from the war, he married the love of his life, Marie on her 17th birthday in Flower's Cove. They had 12 children, 4 of whom died at a very early age.

Five years ago, he lost his oldest son, Lambert, and the love of his life, Marie. With the remaining 7 children they helped to lighten the load of his burden. He was taken care of by his daughters until going to the Ivy Durley Place 1 year ago. He was quite contented and really enjoyed living at the Ivy Durley in the time that he spent there.

He was a very special war veteran in our area. Every year he celebrated Remembrance Day Service at CRMA School in Flower's Cove. He would dress in his uniform all adored with his hat, medallions and of course his poppy. He told stories to the students and staff about his journey to the war.

He also attended the Remembrance Day breakfast in his own community of Sandy Cove every year which began to honor him and other war veterans for what they did for our country.

He was a very hard working man. He spent his summers fishing and the winters working in lumber camps. He also enjoyed going to parties with family and friends. He loved to hear music, dancing and sharing stories of the past.

He lived a long and happy 94 years of his life until he peacefully passed away at Charles  S. Curtis Memorial Hospital at St. Anthony on May 5, 2014. His family and friends have been blessed to have such a wonderful man in their lives for so long. It comforts everyone to know that he is with his family in eternal life.

He leaves to mourn with fond and loving memories his 4 sons; Calvin (Edith), Coy (Vernita), Gorvin (Debbie), Clayte (Wendy); 3 daughters; Lavenia, Patsy (Levi), Darlene (Wood); daughter-in-law; Sheila; 15 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren; sisters; Alma Diamond and Selina White; and sister-in-law; Rita Coles.

He was predeceased by his parents (Archibald and Eliza Coles), wife (Marie), brothers (George, Roland, Lush and Elias), sister (Alice Genge), son Lambert & Son-in -law; Clyde White

Visitation took place at St. Thomas Anglican Church in Sandy Cove, the funeral service followed at 11:00 am on May 8, 2014 with Rev. Marlene Harvey and Joyce White officiating. Burial Took Place at the Anglican cemetery at Savage Cove. Funeral Arrangements where entrusted to Kerry M. Fillatres Funeral home, St. Anthony and Roddickton. Rest in Peace. Lest We Forget. 

PENNEY, DOUGLAS EDGAR

Douglas Edgar Penney was born in Great Brehat on May 12, 1928, one of seven brothers and sisters. The son of a fisherman, he fished with his brother Joseph for many years before working with the IGA, where he retired at the age of 55 years. He loved his family and friends and held a special place in his heart for his grandchildren and his great grandchildren. Doug loved the outdoors and spent many hours on the ponds and rivers and moose hunting. Those who had the privilege of meeting him no doubt experienced his quick wit and humour. Doug was never one to be stuck for a comment or a joke. He spent his last two years at Shirley’s Haven PCH, where he enjoyed many fun filled hours with friends, old and new. He passed peacefully away early in the morning on May 5th at the Charles S Curtis Memorial Hospital in St. Anthony. Doug is survived by his children Marion (Roland), Melva(Albert) and Edward (Sharon). He is also survived by his grandchildren Kevin (Margaret), Rick (Lisa), Penny (John), Jason (Darlene), Nadina, Stephanie (Jordan) and Shaun. Also by his great grandchildren, Megan, Katelyn, Hannah, Grant, Aaron and Jack. He also leaves to mourn his sister Violet, and a large number of nephews and nieces as well as a special friend, Lucy Pilgrim. He was predeceased by his loving wife of 52 years, Naomi, his parents Edgar and Annie, brothers Joseph and Kenneth, and sisters Susie, Mildred and Maisie. He will be sadly missed. Visitation was held at the funeral home in St. Anthony, the funeral followed in the United Church in St. Anthony at 2:00pm on the 8th of May with Rev. John McGonigle officiating. TAYLOR, NELLIE BEATRICE

Nellie was born on September 10, 1930 in Raleigh as the eldest child of Lewis and Grace Evans. on November 16th, 1949 she married Cecil Taylor and together they had 10 Children. she was blessed to have 17 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. on the 5th of may, 2014 Nellie Passed away into peace at the Charles S. Curtis Memorial Hospital in St. Anthony, at the age of 83. Left to mourn are her Children Robert (Dorothy), Joan Welsh (Ron), Ralph (Lillian), Faye Pittman (Edgar), Victor, Velma Pynn (Randy), Rick (Donna), Helen Greene (Keith), Kevin (Wavey), Cheryl Randell (Glen), grand children Pam (Perry), Dennis, Sherry (Jake), Carla (Bart), Deborah (Todd), Shannon (Sarah), Justin (Jennifer), Byron, Tiah, Stephanie (Randy), Victoria, Tyrone (Natasha), Micheal (Sherry), Christopher (Keitha), Megan (Adam), Crystal (Dave), and Gregory (Jade).  Great Grandchildren Justin, Jordan, Kayla, Korbin, Abby, Aiden, Braydon, Allyson, Kaitlin, Jakob, Georgia, Makayla, Ryder, Bronwyn, Lincoln, Cassandra and Greyson. she also leaves to mourn her siblings William, Alfred (Frances), Gilbert (Joyce), Leonora, Violet, Debbie, and Faye (Cecil), sister in law Mamie Taylor. Nellie lived to see the passing of her husband Cecil, Mother and father Grace and Lewis, son Robert, son in law Edgar, Grandchildren Robert and Tracey, Sister in law Keziah, brother in laws ford and karl. the visitation was held at the United Church in Raleigh, from which the funeral service was held at 2:00pm on the 7th of May with Rev. Charles L. Pendleton officiating. Cremation followed the service with burial at the old untied cemetery in Raleigh at a later date. Funeral Arrangements were entrusted to Kerry M. LAWLESS, ISIDORE

Passed Away at the Charles S. Curtis Memorial Hospital on May 1st, 2014, Mr. Isidore Lawless of Flowers Cove, in his 65th year. Isidore leaves to Mourn; His Wife Elsie, Children Melissa (Andre), Gwennola (Erik), Ada (Henry) and Tamsin, his siblings Dave (Late Vieta), Ignatius (Sheila), Mark (Betty), Gack (Lavenia), William (Colleen), Fulton (Peggy), Sisters Mary (Gerald) and Beatrice (Alonzo), Grand Children Dalya, Nathan, Mavoureen and Kellan, Step children Zena (Freddy) and Barry (Selena), Step Grand children Dalton, Jagger, Braeden, Cierra, Echo, skye and Kailey. the visitation was held at The Lady Of Snow Catholic Church in Flowers Cove, From Whcih the Funeral Mass Was Held At 11am on Monday May 5th with Father Gabriel Selvanachan officiating. RICHARDS, KEZIAH

Keziah Richards (Nee Saunders) was born Nov. 12, 1924, in Cook's Harbour, NL to George and Diane (Allingham) Saunders. She Was the Third oldest of Six sisters at the age of 12, her mother died. she left Cook's Harbour to live with Clem and Rebecca Richards in St. Carol's, on February 24th 1942, she married Frederick Richards and together they raised five Children and one Grand Child. on April 30th, 2014, Keziah Passed away at the Charles S. Curtis Memorial Hospital on The 30th of April, 2014, she leaves to mourn her husband of 72 years, Frederick, Sons Roy (Chris), Gordon (Margaret), Daughters Shirley (Willis), Faye (Hedley), Judy (Harrison), 17 grand children, 27 great grandchildren and 3 great great grandchildren. her sister Elizabeth Dorcas, Half Brothers Fred (Elsie), San (Eliza), Roy (Priscilla), Melvin (Carol), Edgar (Sheila), Half Sisters Joyce, Velma (Morris), and a large number of relatives and friends.  she was predeceased by her parents George and Diane Saunders, Sisters Bessie, Helen, Rebecca and Vera, Half Brother Havner, and her step mother Clara. Visitation was held at St. Paul's Anglican Church in St. Carols, From Which The Funeral Service was held at 2:30pm on Sunday May 4th 4, 2014 with Rev. Mark Wilkoff officiating. TOOPE, GEORGE

Passes away Suddenly in Pond Cove on the 28th of April, 2014, Mr. George Toope, in his 63rd year. Left behind with heavy hearts are Sybil, Mack (Shirley), Vicki (Cleon), Shannon (Krystle), Brandon (Jenine), Josh, Jorja, Jaxon they will keep him in their hearts forever. though he was a young man, George lived to see the passing of his parents Oliver and Deborah Toope. Visitation was held at the The Church of The Advent in Plum Point, from which the funeral service took place at 2:00pm on Saturday, May 3rd, with rev. PATEY, VIDA MAE

Vida was born in Little Brehat on February 28, 1928 to William and Beatrice Budgell. In 1948 she married Reuben Patey, the love of her life. They moved to St. Anthony in 1956 where they raised their three children while owning and operating their own business. She was an active member of the UCW and the Legion Ladies Auxiliary. Her passions were her family, berry picking, and Little Brehat. She passed peacefully away on April 29, 2014. She is survived by her children Keith (Dora), Gloria (Reg) and Laurie (Rosarii), her grandchildren Darryl (Kim, Erin & Kurtis), Shane (Nicole, Haley & Tayler), Jennifer (Dean, Joanna & Liam), Christopher (Holly & Liam), and Crystal. She is also survived by sister in-laws Vera, Florence and Phyllis, a large extended family of nieces and nephews and a wide circle of friends. She was predeceased by parents William and Beatrice Budgell, husband Reuben in 2006, infant grandson Reginald, five brothers and two sisters.Visitation Took Place At the funeral home in St. Anthony, Followed By the funeral service at the St. Anthony United on May 1st at 2:00pm with Rev. PATEY, STEWART ALBERT

Passed away Peacefully at the John M. Gray Center in St. Anthony in his 87th year, Mr. Stewart Patey. Stewart was born to Meta and Noah Patey of St. Anthony. He was employed as a stationary engineer in St. Anthony and Labrador City, from where he retired in 1990 and moved back to St. Anthony. Stewart was predeceased by his parents, son Wilfred, brothers Charles, Wilfred, Lloyd & Norman and sister Jessie. Left with their memories are wife Ida, son Charles (Kitty), Daughter Eileen (Ralph); grandchildren David, Melissa & Jonathan; great-grandchildren Benjamin, Jack & Ella; brother Francis (Agnes), as well as other extended family. Visitation took place at the funeral home in St. Anthony, Followed By the Funeral Service at 2:00pm on Thursday May 1st, at the Salvation Army Church in St. Anthony with Major Baggs Officiating, Cremation followed the Service with Burial at a Later Date.  Funeral Arrangements where entrusted to Kerry M. POWELL, HEDLEY SAMUEL

Passed away peacefully at the John M. Gray Center in St. Anthony NL. On April 25th, Mr. Hedley S. Powell of Goose Cove in his 83rd year. Hedley leaves to mourn; his wife of 59 years, Mary Ellen Powell, his children Majrie (Wilf), Norm, Phyllis, Judy, Patricia (John),  Olive (Chris), Marina (Mike), Roxanne (Darrell) and Derrick (Bonnie), as well as his siblings Beulah  Parsons, Lydia Roberts, Sadie Parsons, and Don Powell. Grand children Shelly, Christopher, Audrey Sara, Jordan, Denata, Jesse, Alysha, Alexandra, Anika, Adam, Patrick, Andrew, DJ, Johanna, Emily and Samuel, Great Grandchildren Caleb, Clinton, Jesse, Jorja And Oliver. Visitation took place at the Funeral Home in St. Anthony, followed by the funeral service at the Immaculate Conception Church in Goose Cove at 2:00pm on April The 28th with Father Anthony Officiating.
