Eli George Humby, known as George Humby, was born on December 2nd, 1931, in St. Lunaire - Griquet, to Edward and Jessie Humby. They moved to Roddickton in the early 1950’s, so his father could work in the woods for a lumber company. At a young age he started working in the woods for Bowater Pulp and Paper as a wood cutter. After working in the woods for about 10 years he started a small general store for the area. He then ventured to Goose Bay with his good friend Earl Pilgrim to work on the military base driving forklift. His desire was to move back to Roddickton so after a few years they moved back, and he started Imperial oil which he operated for 34 years.

While still running the oil business he started his own lumber business “Northern Lumber Company” where he employed 419 men from the area. In 1985 he started a general store in town known as E.G Humby and Sons. This store sadly burned after only 5 years in business, but they relocated to a new location which they ran until 1997. He was always concerned about local jobs and went to great lengths to create jobs in the local area. In retirement he was always around to help his three sons out in any way he could. He enjoyed spending time with his family and good chats with his friends at the coffee shop. In 1960 he married Alma Lillian Harris and they had three sons, Paul, Peter & Perrin. They were also blessed with eight (8) grandchildren and six (6) great-grandchildren. George’s greatest pleasure was to give to others as God blessed him.
