BEST, CALVERT WILLIE

December 28, 1952 – November 22, 2019

Passed away November 22, 2019 from the Health Science Centre in St. Johns at the age of 66. Cal was born in St. Anthony, NL situated at the tip of the Great Norther Peninsula to Robert and Evangeline Best on December 28, 1952. He spent years exploring the breathtaking landscape that is so familiar to him… walking the shorelines, tramping through bogs and climbing over cliffs. It is this and the culture and heritage of the province that was a source of his inspiration. His carvings were glimpses of what he saw in the past and what he saw around him at that moment. The fact that he had years seeing animals and birds in their natural environment allowed him not only to show their form, but to capture movement as well. Cal’s exquisitely carved images done primarily in moose and caribou antler capture the rich heritage, unique culture, and natural beauty of the region. Cal will be forever loved and remembered by his Wife, Family, and Friends.
