Passed away November 18, 2023 at the Charles S. Curtis Memorial Hospital in St. Anthony with his loving wife, Hazel by his side at 85 years of age.

Henry leaves to mourn his wife, Hazel (Nee Woodward); his children: Cyril (Jackie), Cora (Greg), Collette (Trent), Carrie (Barry), Clifford (Lisa), Claude (Tammy); Daughter-in-law: Gloria; Grandchildren: Tara, Nikki, Tyler, Shandi, Shawna, Kyla, Neko, Lily, and Valentino; Great-grandchildren: Clyde, Ella, Chase, Samuel, Carleigh, Quinn, Jonas, Jakaila, Jagger, and Harvey; Sister: Moram Diamond, as well as other extended family and friends.

He is predeceased by his son: Clyde; parents: Samuel and Leah Brown; brothers: Leonard, Edward, Harvey; and Sisters: Lucy Brown and Rita Pynn.

Visitation will take place from St. Matthew’s Anglican Church in Cooks Harbour beginning the afternoon of Monday, November 20, 2023. The family service will take place Monday evening at 7:00 pm. The funeral will take place at 2:00pm on Tuesday, November 21, 2023 with Rev. Arthur Kinsella officiating. Interment to follow.

BAINES, GEORGE

January 28, 1959 - November 20, 2023

After a short, courageous battle with cancer, it is with profound sadness and broken hearts that we the family of George Baines share the sad new of his passing on November 20, 2023 at the age of 64. George passed in the comfort of his own home, surrounded by his loving family and friends as he had wished for.

George was born January 28, 1959 to Noah and Dorcas Baines of Reefs Harbour. George enjoyed spending time at the cabin and camping all around NL in is motorhome as well as spending time out in boat and fishing (which he did all his life). He enjoyed time with family and friends.

George will be forever remembered and sadly missed by his loving partner, Darlene; his son: Mitch; Stepsons: David (Brittney), Joshua; Granddaughter: Lindsay; Sisters: Effie (Baxter), Joy (Steve), Leah (Jeff); Brothers: Hubert (Lucy), Cyril (Theresa), John, Bob; Mother-in-law: Pauline Eddison; Brothers-in-law: Kenneth and Darrell Eddison; a large number of nieces, nephews, and a large circle of extended family and friends.

George was predeceased by his parents: Noah and Dorcas Baines; Sisters: Vonnie and Jill; and Brothers: Pierce, Noah, and Ivan.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Mina and all the Doctors, Nurses, and Staff of Labrador-Grenfell Health, Dr. Holmes, Dr. Ahmad, and Tracey House NP.

POWELL, MARY ELLEN

January 7, 1937- November 18, 2023

Passed peacefully away at the John M. Gray Center on November 18, 2023 surrounded by her loving family.

Mary was born January 7, 1937 to Johanna and Peter Dempsey in Grandois, NL. She moved to Goose Cove at a young age. It was there she met and married the love of her life, Hedley Powell. They were married on November 10, 1954 and together raised 9 children. Mary was a devoted, loving mother who always put her family above everything and ensured they never wanted for anything.

She leaves to mourn with broken hearts her children: Marie, Norm, Phyllis, Judy (Clyde), Patricia (John), Olive (Chris), Marina (Mike), Roxanne (Darrell), and Derek (Bonnie); Grandchildren: Shelley (Melissa), Audrey, Sarah (Dirk), Jorden, Denata (Shaun), Jesse, Alysha (Dean), Alex, Anika (Dan), Adam (Deana), Patrick (Alicia), Andrew (Alison), DJ (Rebecca), Johanna (John), Emily, and Sam; Great-grandchildren: Tyler, Caleb, Calleigh, Emilia, Riley, Clinton, Jesse, Jorja, Oliver, Owen, Jacob, Jensen, Lexa, Avery, Emery, and Meredith; Sister: Alice; Brother: Peter as well as many extended family.

She was predeceased by her parents: Johanna and Peter; husband: Hedley; son-in-law: Wilf; grandson: Christopher; great-granddaughter: Willow; sister: Mary; and brothers: Vergus and Gary.

Her family would like to extend a sincere thank-you to the staff of the John M Gray Center for caring for her in her final years. A special thank-you to Virg Gibbons for helping make a very difficult time more bearable. All your kindness and care will never be forgotten.

Visitation will take place from Kerry M. Fillatre Funeral Home in St. Anthony on Sunday, November 19, 2023 from 2-4 pm and 7-8:30 pm to be followed by family prayer from 8:30-9 pm. The funeral service will take place on Monday, November 20, 2023 from the Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church in Goose Cove at 11:00 am with Fr. George officiating. Cremation will follow with a burial service to be announced at a later date.

REARDON, DONALD ALBERT

December 31, 1952 - October 31, 2023

Donald Albert Reardon passed away peacefully at the Health Sciences Centre in St. John’s on October 31, 2023 in his 70th year.

Don was a hard worker who fished for all his life from a very young age. He loved the simple things; his family, music, his gardens, his cat DW, and his beautiful home of Sou West. He was dearly loved and will be missed for eternity.

He leaves to mourn, his wife, Bridget; Daughter: Victoria (Tim); Sons: Colin (Ayala), Cory (Alex), Randy (Melanie); Grandchildren: Dawn, Dillyn, Dominick, Daniel, Jenna, Chloe, Alexis, Michael, Jeremy; Great-grandchild: Damien; Siblings: Jack (Emma), Cassie (Ross), Bridget, Nell, Linda (Craig) and his brother and best buddy- Wins; as well as a large circle of nieces, nephews, family and friends.

He is predeceased by his parents: Maurice and Jenette Reardon; Sisters: Caroline, Diane, and Anastasia; and Brother: Cyril.

Visitation will take place from Our Lady Star of the Sea Roman Catholic Church in Croque on Saturday, November 4 and Sunday, November 5, 2023. A Rosary and Remembrance will be held at the Church on Sunday, November 5 at 7:00 pm with the funeral service to take place on Monday, November 6, 2023 at 11:00 am with Fr. George officiating. June 27, 1935 - November 3, 2023

Passed away peacefully at the Charles S Curtis Memorial Hospital surrounded by loving family on November 3, 2023 at the age of 88.

She leaves to mourn, her children: Donald (Neta), Freeman (Florence), Patsy (David), Leona (Richard), Scott (Debbie), and Pam (Brad); Brothers: Fred (Louise), Edward; as well as many Grandchildren, Great-grandchildren and a large circle of other extended family and friends.

Adelaide is predeceased by her Husband: Benjamin Richards; Daughter: Jean Patey; Sister: Rhoda; Grandsons: Dana and Brian; Sister-in-law: Margaret; and Brother-in-law: Malcolm.

HUMBY, LESTER

February 16, 1950 - October 29, 2023

Lester Humby was born in St. Lunaire on February 16th, 1950 to Joseph and Jessie Humby. On September 24th, 1976 he married the love of his life, Judy Blake. They had many great years together and raised 3 children who he loved dearly.

He was known to be a hard worker by all who knew him. Lester was a fisherman, he built boats and did carpentry all throughout his life. He was also a concrete finisher in later years. Lester enjoyed hunting moose and seal, fishing, and thoroughly enjoyed being in the woods.

He leaves to mourn his Wife, Judy; Sons, Todd (Vanessa), Alvhon; Daughter: Jennifer (Charley) Curl; 4 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren; Brothers: Reginald (Regina), Gordon (Margie), Nelson (Joan); Sister: Irene Hillier as well as a large circle of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and close friends.

Lester is predeceased by his Parents: Joseph and Jessie Humby; Brothers: William, Wilbert, Alvohn, Truman, and Harold; Sister: Florence Patey.

Passed away on October 23, 2023 at the Charles S. Curtis Memorial Hospital at the age of 82 years.

TAYLOR. BESSIE MAE

September 27, 1926 - October 20, 2023

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, great great grandmother and sister, Bessie Mae Taylor of Raleigh, presiding at the Shirley Haven Senior Home in St. Anthony. After a short illness Bessie passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Friday, October 20, 2023, at the Charles Curtis Memorial Hospital at the age of 97 years.

Bessie was born in Wild Bight, Cape Norman, one of 16 children. At an early age, in order to survive, moved to Quirpon and then Raleigh where she worked with large fishing crews cooking, cleaning and performing many other chores that were assigned to her.

It was in Raleigh where she met and married Ernest Taylor and raised five children. Alongside her husband she took care of all household chores and also worked in the fishing stage for many hours often extending to late nights putting away fish. She also spent many hours in the vegetable garden. Bessie was a life long member of the Raleigh UCW and also taught Sunday School. Throughout the years she also boarded many teachers and ministers who needed a place to reside. She also sewed for many years for the Grenfell Mission, making parkas.

After the passing of her husband in 1979 she continued with her sewing and knitting and also spent a summer working on the water line in Raleigh. In later years she met a friend and partner. Together they spent time travelling back and forth from her home to his, also doing a lot of camping and some gardening. During those years she also began playing darts, which she enjoyed very much, playing in a number of tournaments. After the passing of her partner in 2013 she spent time with her children from Raleigh to Grande Prairie. In 2020 she moved into Shirley Haven Seniors Home where she resided until her passing.

Bessie leaves to mourn with fond and loving memories her sons David, Cyril (Bernette), Alvin (Bev), daughters Edith Patey, Bernice (Glossen) Taylor, fifteen grandchildren, eighteen great grandchildren and two great, great grandchildren. Brothers Cyril (Elvie) Campbell, Harrison Campbell, Melvin (Cora) Campbell, Seymour Campbell, Sisters Bertha (Maxwell) Richards, Christina Dredge, Edith Smith, sister in law Marie Campbell, and extended family and friends.

She is predeceased by husband Ernest, parents Robert and Edith Campbell, special partner Adam Williams, daughter in law Phyllis Taylor, son in law, Winston Patey, brothers Edward Campbell, Allan Campbell, Herbert Campbell. The family wishes to send thanks to the staff of Shirley’s Haven Seniors Home for their care of our mother during her stay at the home. Also thank you to the doctors and nurses of Charles Curtis Memorial Hospital who helped to care for her and make her comfortable during her stay this past week. A special thank you to her granddaughter, Lisa Webb, who spent the last three nights with her in palliative care. Her presence and knowledge of palliative care helped us greatly during this difficult time.

WAY, JOHN

May 3, 1928 – October 16, 2023

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our loving father, grandfather, great grandfather and brother John Way of Savage Cove. After a short illness John passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Monday, October 16, 2023 at the age of 95 years at the Charles Curtis Memorial Hospital in St. Anthony.

He was a loving, gentle and kind man, a fisherman, a carpenter, a boat builder, a man of many talents. He could often be seen on the wharf chatting with the fishermen or out on the point watching the boats through his spyglasses or sitting out on his front step. He also enjoyed his weekly visit to the co-op where he would see people and have a little chat. He was always willing to offer a lending hand to his family and in the community.

He leaves to mourn with fond and loving memories his son Elijah (Cicely), daughters Winnie (Stan), Daisy (Tom); Grandchildren Jeffrey (Joni), Sheldon (Peggy), Chad (Natasha), Denise (Monty), Damian (Trina), Robin (Ivy), Cleon (Vicki); Great Grandchildren Jonah, Sydney, Jayden, Nathan, Tori, Jaxon, Cody, Leya, Brittany, Brody, Josh, Jorja, Daniel, Staci and Benjamin; Sister Winnie (Ken) and extended family and friends.

He is predeceased by his loving wife of 66 years Louisa, Mother and Father – Keziah and Benjamin Elijah Way, Mother and Father-in law Clara and Stephen White, Brothers Llewellyn (Dulcie), Earl (Mary Ellen), Sisters Rachel (Charlie) and Jane.

CANNING, SUSIE

April 22, 1943 – October 9, 2023

It is with great sadness and broken hearts that the family of Susie Nita Shirley Canning announce her passing at Curtis Memorial Hospital in St. Anthony, NL on October 9, 2023 at the age of 80. She passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family.

Susie will be remembered for her love for her family and her kindness to everyone. She married the love of her life on June 28, 1961 and they had 5 beautiful children together. She gave her heart to the Lord on July 14, 1974 and was very active in the Apostolic Faith church. She was a member of the choir for 45 years, leader of the youth choir, president of the ladies group and a Sunday school teacher for many years.

She was an exceptional wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt and had so much love for everyone. She worked very hard for her family and made sure they had everything they needed and wanted. She loved to knit, sew, crochet, bake and cook. She was an awesome seamstress and could make anything from wedding/graduation dresses, quilts or snowmobile seat covers. She made wedding/ birthday/retirement cakes for most everyone in the Englee area. She loved to spend time with her husband berry-picking, gardening and splitting and packing in the wood.

Susie is predeceased by her parents Gordon and Daisy Hopkins; parents-in-law Ivan and Myrtle Canning; Daughter Baby Canning; Sister Betty Randell; Sister-in-law Phyllis Cassell; Brother-in-laws Harrison Canning, Albert Cassell, Winston Fillier & Wilbourn FIllier.

Memorial service will take place on Sunday October 15, 2023 at 2:00 PM with Pastor Kirby Hewlett officiating. Interment to follow at the Apostolic Faith Cemetery.
