Neville Morris Penney was born in St. Anthony to Ida and Malcolm Penney on June 17, 1934. In 1939, at the age of 5, he started at the Grenfell school and continued until he finished grade 10. In 1955, he graduated grade 11 from Prince of Wales and from there he went on to Mount Allison University in Sackville, Nova Scotia until 1956 when he moved back home to St. Anthony. During the summer of 1956, Morris worked with Fraser Brace at the American Base, until his Father asked Morris to come work at Wentworth Store. Shortly thereafter, he met the love of his life, Bessie Taylor of Raleigh. They married on September 4, 1957. From 1975, Morris worked as a dedicated Pharmacy Storekeeper with Charles S. Curtis Memorial Hospital until his retirement in 1997. In his pastimes, Morris thoroughly enjoyed the outdoors. He loved to go moose hunting with his buddies Morris King and Jim Penney; seal hunting and rabbit catching; trouting –where he made several trips walking the White Hills and Goose Cove Ponds; and Salmon fishing with Tom Hancock and Chester Slade. His talents weren’t limited to the outdoors. For years he played hockey with the St. Anthony Polars, and he had a passion for making lamps and candleholders with the wood lathe, and he had a keen interest in Schooners and Tall Ships. He was also a member of the Firehall when it was founded in 1969 for about three years, as well as the Lion’s Club and St. Anthony Kinsmen. He passed peacefully away at the Charles S. Curtis Memorial Hospital on the 9thday of February 2016, Mr. Neville Morris Penney of St. Anthony was in his 81styear. He leaves to mourn with fond and loving memories are his wife, Bessie of 58 years; daughters Dale (Scott) and Lois (Hank); precious grandchildren Penney-Lynn (Nathan) and Zachary (Danielle); great-grandchildren Reid Taylor, Olivia Simms and Isabella Reid; sister Marie Eaton (Wayne); niece Angela; sister-in-laws Zilda Lamb (Robert), Rosie Elliott; and brother-in-law Glossen Taylor (Bernice). . Morris was predeceased by his brother, Ronald Penney; father, Malcolm Morris Penney; mother, Ida Penney; and nephew, Malcolm Eaton. Visitation was held at the funeral home after which the funeral service took place at the United church in St. Anthony on Friday February 12, 2016 at 2:00pm with Rev. Dinesh Gomes officiating. Passed peacefully away at the John M. Gray Center on the 2nd day of February 2016, Mrs. Esther Compton of Roddickton was in her 89th year. She leaves to mourn with loving memories her husband Noah Compton- St. Anthony, NL, Sons Elamore Reid – Roddickton, NL and Kevin(Debbie)- Roddickton, NL; Daughter Vivian Compton – Edmonton, AB; Her Grandchildren Allison, Travis, Mason, Cadenz, and Stephen, her Great-Grandchildren Aleyna, Ashlynn, Emmett, Jacob and Jesse as well as a large circle of family and friends. Visitation was held at the Apostolic Faith Church in Roddickton from which the funeral service was held at 2:00pm on Sunday February 7, 2016 with Rev. Christopher Hewlett officiating. Robert Roland Vatcher Parsons was born in Freshwater, Carbonear, NL on April 27, 1925 to Jehu and Fanny Parsons. He leaves to morn his loving wife Beulah, loving children and many grandchildren and great grandchildren. He is predeceased by his parents Jehu & Fanny; Brothers Jehu & Freeman; Sister Dulcie and Grandson Steven.
Robert left Carbonear at an early age to come to Goose Cove where he spent his early years as a fisherman. He always built his own boats and built the family home. He moved to St. Anthony in 1973 and went to work with the Grenfell Mission . He worked there for 15 years until he retired in 1988. In his spare time he enjoyed going out in boat, squid jigging and fishing. He also loved trout fishing with his grandchildren.
He was a faithful member of this church and loved and worshiped the Lord deeply. Through all the years he never faltered in his faith
Visitation was held at the Funeral Home in St. Anthony, after which the Funeral Service was held at the St. Anthony United Church at 11:00am on Saturday January 30th with Rev. NOBLE, BERTHA WINNIFRED
Was born in St. Anthony where she grew up on August 31, 1925 to Emily Jane and Harrison Biles. ON May 25, 1946 she married the love of her life Victor Noble of Great Brehat, where together they raised ten children, four girls and six boys. Bertha passed peacefully away at the John M. Gray Center surrounded by her loving family on the 27th day of January 2016, Mrs. Bertha Noble of Great Brehat was in her 90th year. She leaves to mourn with loving memories her children Rita(Bob), Don(Donna), Rueben(Ruby), Marion, Cliff(Judy), Dave(Shelly), Terry(Ann), Rick(Loretta), Gladys(Lorne), Sheila(Rick), She was blessed wityh fifteen Grandchildren, Fourteen Great- Grandchildren and Threee Great great-Grandchildren, Two Brothers Lewis and Walter(Ethel), two Half Brothers Norm(Marilymn) and Edd, half-sister Dorothy(Edd), sister-in-law’s Bertha and Daphne. Bertha was predeceased by her husband Victor, two infant sons, Her parents Emily Jane and Harrison Biles, Brothers Tom and Eli, sister-in-law Eunice and Husband William Henry Cull, sister-in-law Doris Scott and Husband Donald Scott, Vera Richards and Husband David Richards, three Brother-in-law’s Pierce Noble, Eric Noble, and Wilfred Noble, as well as a large circle of family and friends she will be sadly missed by all who knew her. COMPTON, VELMA JANE
Passed away Peacefully on January 16, 2016 at Charles S. Curtis Memorial Hospital in St. Anthony. Velma was born in Bear Cove, White Bay on September 6th, 1924 to William and Hilda Hollett. She moved to Englee at an early age where she worked at John Reeve, General Store. She later married Albert Compton on October 3rd, 1946. Together they raised six Children; four sons and two daughters. She leaves to mourn with fond and loving memories her Sons Garfield (Mary) Compton (Roddickton), Woodrow (Marilyn) Compton (Spaniards Bay), Dorman (Patricia) Compton (Englee), Leaton (Carolyn) Compton (Deer Lake); Daughters Magretta (Frank) Pilgrim (Roddickton) and Brenda (Gary) Randell (Englee); Sister Rowena Hollett (Gary Reid) (Englee); Brothers Maxwell (Deliah) Hollett (Bay Verte) and George (Sarah) Hollett (New Harbour). She was predeceased by her Husband, Albert Compton; Mother Hilda Hollett; Father William Hollett; and Brother Garfield Hollett. ELLIOTT, WILBERT WALLACE
Born in St. Anthony on April 18, 1938 to William and Maude Elliott, Wilbert Wallace Elliott passed away peacefully on January 20th, 2016. He married Juanita Taylor on December 3rd, 1960 and together they raised four children: Diane, Peggy, Jackie, and Danny. Wilbert was a hard working fisherman. When he retired, he took to gardening, as well as playing and singing. His music was a great pastime. He also loved berry picking and cutting wood. He leaves to mourn his Wife Juanita; Children- Dianne (Alonzo), Peggy, Jackie (Marshall), and Danny (Ursula); Grandchildren- Ryan, Robbie, Adam, Melissa, Michelle, and Dylan; Great-Grandchildren Tyler and Paige as well as a large circle of family and friends. He was predeceased by his brothers Chesley, Ross, Kenneth, Ernest; and his sisters Phyllis, and Hazel. Visitation was held at the United Church in Raleigh from where the funeral took place on January 24, 2016 at 2:00 pm with Rev. Gus Pendleton officiating. CARROLL, FRANCIS HERBERT
It is with great sadness that the family of Herbert Carroll announce his passing on January 18, 2016. Herbert was born in Locke's Cove on July 20th, 1943 - he was the oldest child of William & Emily Jane Carroll. He lived in Locke's Cove until he married the love of his life Mamie Williams in 1967. Thatsame year theresidents of Locke's Cove were forced to resettle. Herbert & Mamie then moved to Cook's Harbour where they built their own home and began their family, in 1971 they welcomed their first born daughter Darlene & their second daughter Deanna was born in 1977. They loved life & family so much, but with the birth of their first grandson Jayden Adey in 1999, they experienced a love much greater than life itself. Then, in 2000, they were blessed with a second grandson Dustin Carroll. In, 2010 Herbert was blessed with yet another grandson Justice Adey, which helped him deal with the grief of losing his beloved wife Mamie. Herbert had a very difficult year in 2009, when his loving wife passed away from heart failure on August 9th. Herbert's family was his life, he lived each day making sure his wife, daughters & grandson's were well taken care of. He was a hard working fisherman and the captain of his own fishing VesselThe "Fortune Cape" until the decline in the fishery. On February 22nd, 2011 Herbert was diagnosed with Bowel Cancer & would need to undergo emergency surgery. He had a very difficult recovery and was forced to move out of his own home, he moved in with his youngest daughter Deanna & her family in March 2011. The next few years he continued to battle several rounds of chemotherapy and the return of his cancer. Herbert passed away peacefully at his daughter's home on January 18th, 2016 at 11:12pm, surrounded by his family who will miss him for the rest of their lives. Herbert leaves to mourn his loving daughters - Darlene Carroll (Deon Curl) & Deanna Adey (David Adey); his grandsons - Dustin Carroll, Jayden & Justice Adey; mother - Emily Jane Carroll; Sister - Girty Larkin (James); Brother - Maxwell Carroll (Barbara); Sister-in-law - Annie Williams; Brother-in-law - Roland Williams (Marg) as well as a large number of nieces and nephews, friends and family. He was predeceased by his wife- Mamie Williams Carroll; father- William Carroll; and Brother-in-law- Cecil Dredge. Donna was born in St. Anthony to Sadie and Jehu Parsons. She leaves to mourn her loving partner Karla Loder, her daughters Emily and Hannah and their dad, Morey Hillier. She also leaves her mom Sadie and sister Joan Pynn, niece Chelsea Pynn and nephew Jeremy Pynn and all of the Hillier family. She is predeceased by her father, Jehu Parsons. Donna's life was dedicated to her family and the brightest lights in her life were her daughters. Donna spent her work life with Labrador Grenfell Health and leaves many loyal friends and coworkers in the dental department. She was a dedicated employee and was proud of the work she did there. Hers is a light that went out much too soon but the glow from her life will long shine bright through those who remember her. Visitation was held at Kerry M. It is with great sadness that the family of the late Mabel Caines (King) announce her passing at the John M Gray Centre in St Anthony on Saturday Jan 16, 2016 at the age of 70. Mabel will be sadly missed by her loving children Mark (Shona), Ralph (Augustine) and Theresa (Eric) and her grandchildren Matthew, Noah and Olivia.
