CANNING, NINA MARGARET

Nina Margaret Canning was born at Hooping Harbour on December 10th, 1938. She was the daughter of Christopher and Jenneth Randell. There were 6 other children born into this family. Edgar, Julian (deceased) Joyce, Manuel (deceased), Wanda & Sidney. In the 1950’s at Hooping Harbour, she met and married Hayward Canning of Roddickton.

6 children were born into this union. Sadie, Hector, Marlene, Howard, Rodrick & Travis. They lived in Roddickton for approximately 3 years then moved to Hooping Harbour and built their first home and continued to raise their family there until resettlement to Bide Arm in 1969.

In 1955 at the age of 16, 67 years ago, Nina gave her heart to the Lord. She made and gave a life-time commitment to her church in Hooping Harbour, Bide Arm and Kitchener. She faithfully supported her church in service and financially. She faithfully attended every service, choir practice, round table discussion, Sunday school, and ladies’ charity group. Her faith and trust in God got her through many rough times and until the day she died she had never waivered on this commitment.

On January 17th, 1977, her husband Hayward Canning met with a tragic accident on a logging operation site in Cole Pond area. Having no source of income and never having worked outside the home, she continued to raise her family along with her special grandson Jarvis Canning who was 4 months old at the time. In the years that followed she went to work on the Bide Arm fish plant for a period of time. She was also employed at Cassell’s general store working side by side with Aunt Winnie Cassell, she loved this job. (I wonder why!)

In 2000 Nina moved to Kitchener Ontario to care for her grandchildren while her daughter, Sadie, worked. She lived there until the summer of 2017. When she returned to Bide Arm for a visit, it was then that the family made the tough decision to admit her to personal care at Roddickton House. In November 2021 she was admitted to Curtis Memorial Hospital due to progression of Dementia until she could be placed in protective care at the John M Gray Centre on December 16, 2021.

Approximately two months ago she fell and broke her arm. Her health continued to deteriorate since the fall. On Sunday May 22, 2022, at 2:00AM the call came informing the family that her condition has worsened. She was placed in palliative care later that day. Family was with her everyday until she passed peacefully away at approximately 6:00 pm on Wednesday May 25, 2022.

She leaves to mourn her 6 children, Sadie Canning, Hector Canning, Marlene (Eddie) Randell, Howard (Sharron) Canning, Rodrick (Sharon) Canning, Travis (Kara) Canning; 2 Brothers, Edgar (Susie) Randell, Sidney Randell; 2 Sisters, Joyce Cantwell, Wanda (Garland) Ellsworth; 16 Grandchildren; 21 Great-grandchildren; 2 Great-great grandchildren; Also, many extended family members and friends.

Visitation to be held from the Apostolic Faith Church in Bide Arm beginning the evening of Friday, May 27, 2022 and will continue until the funeral on Sunday, May 29, 2022 at 11:00 AM with Pastor Hewlett officiating. Interment to follow.
