SMITH, GEORGE EDWARD

Passed away in St. Johns on the 8th of March 2017 at the age of 83 years. He leaves to mourn his Children Boyce (Kelly), Delphie (Craig), Cicley (Jeff), Maitland (Guy), Joy (Dan), as well as his grandchildren, greatgrandchildren, the Woodward family (Jenny, Cindy, Rod & Sandra), friends, and family. He was predeceased by Eliza Smith and Margaret Woodward. Visitation took place at St. Matthew’s Anglican Church on Monday, March 13th, 2017 at 2:00 pm with Rev. Katie Flynn officiating. MCCARTHY, JOHN JOSEPH

It is with great sadness that we, the family, announce the passing of John Joseph McCarthy at Curtis Memorial Hospital on March 2nd, 2017 in his 53rd year. John was born to Leonard and Laura McCarthy in St. Juliens, NL on June 2ns, 1963. The family moved to Goose Cove, where John attended St. Mary’s School, and then on to Harriott Curtis Collegiate in St. Anthony where he graduated in 1981. After graduation he fished with his dad and brothers. John fell in love with and married the love of his life, Eileen Alyward. They had two beautiful children, whom he cherished, Jordan and Christine. Just over a year ago they were blessed with their first granddaughter, Mya, whom he adored. He also had a lot of love for his two little furbabies, Pepsy and Rebel. In 2007 John enrolled in a Heavy Equipment Operator Course in Badger and from there was employed with CEDA International in Alberta, where he worked for the past 9 years and met some great friends. John’s greatest passion besides family, was for motorcycles. Over the years, with his wife by his side, had many motorcycle adventures. He leaves to mourn with fond and loving memories his Soulmate Eileen, Son Jordan (Chrisoula), Daughter (Christine), and Granddaughter Mya; Sisters Anne (Kevin), Alice (Stephen); Brothers Jerome (Agnes), Ron (Lynn); Mother-in-law (Bernadette) and Father-in-law (Francis) as well as a large circle of family and friends. He was predeceased by his parents. The cremation memorial service took place in Goose Cove on March 9th, 2017 at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with Fr. Vitus officiating. GILLINGHAM, LENORA ANNIE

It is with great sadness that the family of the late Lenora (Annie) Gillingham announce her passing on Thursday, March 2nd 2017 at the Charles S. Curtis Memorial Hospital in St. Anthony, NL., she is 81 years old. Annie leaves to mourn her son Michael Gillingham(Caroline), Granddaughter Cicely Ann Gillingham and Katherine(Chris)Gill, Great Grandchildren Matthew (Kennedy) and Monique Gillingham, Great Great Grandchild Willow all of Labrador City, NL, Her sister Marie Anderson(Willie); Irishtown,NL; special Nephew Reg Locke(Pauline Gilley) Corner Brook, NL; special friends Bob and Maryann Dredge, Blue Cove, NL; as well as a large circle of nieces, nephews, friends and the families of Reginald Rumbolt and John Pittman. Annie was predeceased by her Baby Son James, Parents Chelsey and Mary Jane Locke, Brothers Jim(Blanche) and Willis(Rebecca)and very special friends in life Reginald Rumbolt and John Pittman. Visitation was held at The church of Advent in Plum Point from which the funeral service was held at 2:00pm on the 8th day of March 2017 with Rev. Jennifer Renouf officiating. SIMMS, NELLIE GAYE

passed away on February 24, 2017 at her private residence at the age of 62 years. Nellie Gaye Simms was born November 20th, 1954 at St. Anthony, NL to Alec and Myrtle Simms. She grew up in St. Anthony Bight and then moved to St. Lunaire-Griquet with life-long partner Keith. Nellie worked at food services at Charles Curtis Memorial Hospital for about 30 years. For the past 8 years Nellie worked at Burdens General Store. Nellie loved having the close comfort and companionship of her dog Rufus as she relaxed with a good book. A highlight of her life was spending time with her Grandson Cole. She will be missed by family and friends. She leaves to mourn with fond and loving memories her Husband Keith Burden; Sons Bret and Brian Simms; Grandson Cole Simms; Brother Hayward Simms;  Sisters Jessie Carter, Elsie Parrill, Bessie (Edgar) Blake, Juanita Powell; Mother-in-law Velma Burden; Father-in-law Graham Burden; Sisters-in-law Rita Simms, Karen (Verrick) Patey, Kathy (Roger) Patey, Ann (Gary) Davis; Brothers-in-law George (Cathy) Davis, Neil (Lois) Burden, Kent (Corry) Burden, Kerry (Wendy) Burden, Kirby (Vanessa) Burden as well as a large circle or relatives and friends. Passed away peacefully February 24th, 2017 at Charles S. Curtis Memorial Hospital at the age of 93 years. She leaves to mourn her children Gilbert (Mary), Wilfred (Georgina), Albert (Ellen), Emma (Byron), Arthur (Belinda); brothers Wilfred (Emma), Charles (Bertha), as well as a large circle of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, family, and friends. She was predeceased by her parents, husband Arthur, son Clement, and granddaughter Lois. Visitation was held at Kerry M. Fillatre’s Funeral Home in St. Anthony. The funeral took place from St. Mary’s Anglican Church on February 27, 2017 at 2:00 p, with Rev. Katie Flynn officiating. Interment followed in the new Anglican Cemetery. WAY, DONALD

Passed peacefully away at Charles S. Curtis Memorial Hospital in St. Anthony on February 22, 2017 at the age of 69 years. He leaves with a lifetime of memories his wife of 48 years- Linda; children Kim (Darryl), Lon (Yvette), Rodney (April); Grandchildren Ian, Owen, Boyd, Kyle, Chloe, and Sophie; Mother-in-law Dulcie Genge; Brothers, Sisters, and in-laws, Gorvin and family, Shirley (Frank) and family, Clyde and family, George (Chris) and family, Sadie and family, Greg (Dawn) and family, Mary Ann, Carole, Bertha (Doug) and family, Hilda (Eddie) and family; nephews Peter, Philip (and families); niece Diane as well as a large circle of Aunts, cousins and friends. He was predeceased by his parents John and Hazel Way; Father-in law Ronald Genge; Sisters Eileen Churchill and Olive way; and Brother-in-laws Art Churchill and Tony Genge. Visitation took place from St. Mark's Anglican Church in Savage Cove beginning on Thursday March 9th 2017 continuing until the funeral at 2:00 pm on March 10, 2017 with Rev. Omar officiating. CARPENTER, STELLA MAE

Went to be with the Lord after a brief illness at Charles S. Curtis Memorial Hospital on February 10, 2017 at the age of 92 years. Stella was one of 11 children born to Charles and Miriam Simms. She is survived by her daughters Ella (Pearce), Edith (Calvin) Coles, Melva Simms (Alonzo Drover), her son Tobe Carpenter (Juliette Pottinger); Grandchildren Maurice Pilgrim (and family), Mario Pilgrim (and daughter), Kim Byrne (and family), Clay Simms (and family), Brad Coles (and family), Krista Simms (and family), Ronnie Carpenter, and Penney Reid (and family). She was predeceased by her husband Tobias Carpenter 38 years ago as well by her special friend, Raymond Budgell, 20 years ago. Stella was a lifelong resident of St. Anthony and a long-time member of the Bethel Pentecostal Church. She will be greatly missed but leaves us all with a lifetime of treasured memories. Visitation was held at Kerry M Fillatre’s Funeral Home and the Bethel Pentecostal Church (St. Anthony) from where the funeral service was held on Tuesday, February 14th, 2017 at 11:00 am with Pastor Bessey officiating. Passed away at the John M Gray Centre in St. Anthony on January 8, 2017 at the age of 85 years. He leaves to mourn with fond and loving memories his children Marion (Tom), Randy (Daisy), Dan (Patsy), Guy (Julie), and Gaye, his grandchildren, greatgrandchildren as well as a circle of friends and relatives. He was predeceased by his wife Dorothy (Colbourne), Parents Lenora and Ambrose, as well as his sister Bertha. Visitation was held at Kerry M. CURLEW, CALVIN EDWARD

Passed peacefully away at the Charles S. Curtis Memorial Hospital in St. Anthony on the 3rd day of January. Mr. Calvin Edward Curlew of Englee was in his 81st year. He leaves to mourn with many great and fond memories his wife of 55 years Mae, his sons Dean(Mae), Glenn(Alice), Derek (Anselma) and Sheldon, Grandchildren Gregory(Tracie), Liska (Joey), Shawn(Jessica), and Baby J.J.(deceased), Brother Cecil, Sisters Ethel and Blanch as well as a large circle of family and friends. Visitation was held at the Faith Pentecostal Tabernacle on Friday January 6th followed through to the funeral service on Monday January 9th, 2017 at 2:00 pm with Pastor Simms Officiating, Interment followed in the Pentecostal Cemetery in Englee. BURT, ROY JAMES

Passed away at Charles S. Curtis Memorial Hospital in St. Anthony on January 4, 2016 at the age of 56 years. Roy James Burt was born in St. Anthony on May 22nd, 1960 to the proud parents of Cecil and Dora Burt and graduated Harriott Curtis Collegiate in 1978. On June 17th, 1989 Roy married the love of his life, Joyce Seaward and on June 5th, 1998 they were blessed with the birth of their beautiful daughter Leanne Jessica and in 2009 Roy’s devoted four legged puppy Elbee joined their family. Roy was a devoted husband, amazing father, loving son, brother and a true friend to all who knew him. Roy worked for a number of years with Fishery Products and in 2010 he completed a Heavy Equipment Operator course and was employed as a Distributor with Professional Business Solutions/ Browning Harvey. Roy enjoyed the great outdoors and would always participate in such things as snowmobiling, fishing and hunting. Roy’s greatest love was hockey and he became a valuable player while attending school and later joined a senior league. Roy is predeceased by his parents Dora and Cecil Burt. He will be sadly missed by his family, wife Joyce, daughter Leanne, loyal companion Elbee, Mother in Law Nita, Brothers-Albert (Jo), Gary (Irene), Gus (Cora), Ern, Benson (Daphne) Sister Dorothy (Dennis), Brothers in law-Selwyn (Ivy) Charles (Gaye), Carl (Selma), Guy ( Karen), Sisters in law Marilyn, Eva (Riley) 22 nieces and nephews, Aunt Linda Tucker(Roy) Uncle Henry Kelloway (Gladys) cousins and a large circle of friends. Visitation was held at the Salvation Army Church in St. Anthony from where the funeral took place on January 7, 2016 at 2:00 pm with Captain Brown officiating. Interment followed.
