KENNEDY, JOHN

Passed away August 7th, 2018 at the age of 89 years. John Kennedy was born in Flowers Cove, NL on February 25th, 1929. John was the son of Uncle Mike (Nicholas) and Mary Ann Kennedy (Young). John (Jack as he was lovingly known) was placed in the Grenfell Orphanage in St. Anthony at the age of 7 years old where he was raised and educated until he was 17 years of age. Upon leaving the Orphanage he travelled by dog sled team to Main Brook where he was employed by Bowaters as a Cookee initially but was later hired as a lumberjack. He moved to Roddickton where he continued his career as a woodsman. Uncle Mike, John’s father was residing in Roddickton at that time and was operating a general store. Shortly after moving to Roddickton he met the love of his life Meta Cassell. They were married February 28th, 1952. He set up his own business John Kennedy & Sons for which he was the owner & operator for 30 years. Together with his loving wife they raised a family of 8 children.  After closing his business John & Meta moved to Ontario where he worked in the logging industry for ten years. Upon retiring they moved back to Roddickton where they lived a very contented, loving and happy life together until the morning of August 7th, 2018. John loved and served the Lord for the majority of his life. He had an ear for music and sang and played the violin as part of the Apostolic Faith Mission in Roddickton for many years. He had a heart for others and everyone he met was a friend. He opened his home and his heart to everyone. He judged no one and lived only to serve others. When you saw him, he would greet you with his smile and a wave of his hand. John was a brilliant man with an avid love of reading. He was a hard-working man who loved his family dearly. John passed peacefully away into the presence of the Lord with his wife and some members of his large family by his side. He leaves to mourn his loving wife Meta and 7 of their children. 24 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild.  He leaves behind a legacy of music, faith, love and hope. He is predeceased by his parents, his daughter Marjorie and great-grandson Nicholas. Visitation was held from he Apostolic Faith Church in Roddickton from where the funeral was held on Saturday, August 11, 2018 at 1:00 pm with Rev. Chris Hewlett officiating. Interment followed. PENNEY, MARIE EMMA

May 26, 1944 – August 1, 2018


On August 1, 2018, Marie passed into the presence of the Lord. Marie was born on May 26th, 1944 to parents Fletcher and Myrtle Weir of Roddickton, NL. After finishing school Marie accepted a job as a Nurse’s Aide with the Roddickton Health Clinic. Marie met the love of her life, Daniel Hodge, in 1963 and married that same year. Marie and Daniel were blessed with 5 children; one boy, Perry, and 4 Girls, Patty, Bonnie, Connie, and Joanne. In 1994 Marie’s Husband, Daniel Hodge, passed into the presence of the One that he loved and served. Then, in 1999 Marie met and married George Penney from Port Hope Simpson, Labrador and she was blessed to have inherited two stepsons (spouses) and 5 stepdaughters (spouses) and grandchildren. Marie and George lived in St. Lunaire-Griquet for a year and then moved to Roddickton where they lived together until her untimely passing. Marie leaves to mourn her Husband, George Penney; Daughter, Pastor Bonnie Hodge – Edmonton, AB; Sisters, Victoria (Gilbert), Madonna (Murray), Glenda (Chris) – Thompson, MB; Brother Pleman; 2 granddaughters, Samantha (Dale) – Ft. Mcmurray, AB, Stephanie (Matt) – Ft. Mcmurray, AB; 2 Great-granddaughters Makayli – Edmonton, Cecilia – Ft. Mcmurray; 1 Great-grandson, Zackary – Ft. Mcmurray, as well as a large circle of extended family and friends. Marie was predeceased by her first Husband, Daniel Hodge, 4 Children; Perry, Patty, Joanne, and Connie; her parents Fletcher and Myrtle Weir; Brothers Alfred, Kevin, Garland and her Sister Jennie.

KEARNEY, FRANCIS

Francis Kearney of Croque passed away at the Charles S. Curtis Memorial Hospital on June 4th, 2018 at the age of 62 years. Left to mourn his passing his passing are his sisters and brothers; Marie Byrne- Conche, Angela Tremblett- Bonavista, Margaret (Wade) Dooley- Bay Bull, Patsy (Cyril) Turpin- British Columbia, Dennis Kearney- Carbonear, and Ivan (Kay) Kearney- Croque; Brother-in-law Barry Squires- St. Phillips. Francis was predeceased by his Father William Kearney, Sister Joan Squires who passed in 2007, Mother Mary Agnes Kearney in 2010, and Brother Louis Kearney in 2017. He will be dearly missed. Cremation took place and a service is scheduled for August 1, 2018 at Our Lady Star of the Sea Roman Catholic Church in Croque. Funeral services entrusted to Kerry M. SAUNDERS, LORETTA MAE

Born to Fred and Gladys Burden, in Griquet on October 26th, 1930. Passed away July 28th, 2018 at the Charles S. Curtis Memorial Hospital in St. Anthony at the age of 87 years. Loretta married George Saunders on December 1st, 1948 and together they raised five children; Madge, Ruby, Jim, Glorine, and Annie. Her family meant the world to her and her grandchildren where the light of her life. She love the outdoors and enjoyed gardening, berry picking, and watching the bird and the squirrels coming to the feeder. She was a skilled knitter and contributed to the Women’s Missionaries knitted goods outreach program. She and her husband George were faithful members of the Calvary Pentecostal congregation in St. Lunaire-Griquet. She was predeceased by her husband George and Daughter Ruby. She will be missed by those who mourn her passing and are left with cherished memories. She leaves to mourn with fond and loving memoires her Son Jim (Sylvia); Daughters Madge Decker, Glorine Saunders, Annie Patey (Roy); Son-in-law Bruce Parsons; Eight Grandchildren; Nine Great-grandchildren; Brother Winston Burden (Vida); Sisters Madge Pynn (Joe), Minnie Roham, Sylvia Pilgrim (Ron), Annie Hillier, Flossie Curlew (Freeman); Brother-in-law Eric Saunders (Rita) as well as a large circle of extended family and friends. Loretta was predeceased by her parents Fred and Gladys Burden; Husband George Saunders; Daughter Ruby Parsons; Sisters Florence Patey and Caddie Hillier; Brother Ray Patey; Brother In-laws Sidney Patey and Roland Hillier; and Son in-law Lloyd Decker. PITTMAN, RUTH

Passed away July 24th, 2018 at the age of 84 years. She leaves to mourn her Husband, George Pittman, and Sisters Eliza Genge, Dulcie Humber (and families) as well as a large circle of extended family and friends. Ruth was predeceased by her parents George and Kitty Chambers, her brother Stedman Chambers, and her sister Jane. Visitation was held from the Anglican Church of the Advent in Plum Point from where her funeral was held on July 28th 2018 at 11:00 AM with Rev. Jennifer Renouf officiating and Rev. MITCHELMORE, GARFIELD

Passed away peacefully on 23rd of July 2018 at Charles S. Curtis Memorial hospital in St. Anthony at the age of 86. Garfield was born the son of a fisherman in Green Island Cove on January 23, 1932.  He was a man with a strong work ethic whose work life exposed him to a number of diverse industries and took him to all regions of this beautiful Province (Stephenville, La Scie, Gander, Goose Bay, and St. John’s).  His longest period of consecutive employment was 24 years (1966 – 1990) with Ultramar Canada.  He took great pride in ownership of home, property and personal assets.  He was a proud family man and was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Garfield will always be remembered by his loving wife of 58 years Alma; daughter Yvonne (Frank); sons Bob (Fern), Garfield (Pam), Rick and Albert (Cathy); grandchildren Louise, Christa, David, Paul, Adam, Kelly, Brad, Ryan, Kyle, and Lucas; great-grandchildren Haley, Blake, Callie, and Emma; sisters Gladys (George) and Miriam (late Ronald).  Garfield was predeceased by his son David, parents Albert and Mary Ann; brothers George Henry (late Myrtle) and Stewart.

MOORES, MARTHA

Passed away July 13th, 2018 at Charles S, Curtis Memorial Hospital in St. Anthony at the age of 87 years. She leaves to mourn with loving memories her Daughters Blanche Tywne (George), Thelma Butt (Hubert); Son Richmond; Grandchildren, Colinda, Lenny, Kimberly, Dana, Noreen, Gillian, Trina, Matthew, Gordon, and Carola; Great-grandchildren, Trevor, David, Stacey, Baillie, Dillon, Nikita, Rikkie, Rikita, and Christopher; Great-great-grandchildren, Thomas, Peyton; Brother, Roland Layden (Fannie); as well as a large circle of other family and friends. Martha is predeceased by her husband, Thomas Moores, and Son, Harry Moores. Visitation was held from the United Church in Red Bay from where the funeral was held on Tuesday, July 17th, 2018 at 2:00 pm with Rev. Alice Moores officiating. Interment followed in the United Cemetery in Red Bay.

TOOPE, ROY JR.

March 27th, 1977 – June 22nd, 2018

Many hearts were broken when such a loving and amazing young man was taken from us way too early. Roy Toope Jr of Pond Cove, NL, died on June 22nd, 2018 at the age of 41 years, during a tragic accident while working on the Trans Labrador Highway. Roy was born March 27th, 1977 in St. Anthony, NL, to parents Roy & Rhoda (Gibbons) Toope, and from that day on, he was a special boy to so many. Roy graduated St. Augustine Central High in 1995 with lots of memories and friendships. Roy always had a love for working in the woods and completed a Diploma in Forestry from the College of the North Atlantic. He had many different jobs but one of the most enjoyable jobs was working many years as a Harvester operator, where he made lots of close friends. Roy loved the outdoors - whether it was Salmon Fishing, Hunting, working in the woods or riding skidoo. A few years ago, Roy began his own little piece of paradise – a cabin – at Ten Mile Lake, which he loved and enjoyed for a short time. It will always be a place that holds precious memories that his family will treasure forever. Roy or as most of us called him, Royee, held a very special place in many hearts. His infectious smile had a way to lighten anyone’s day. From listening and reading all the memories from loved ones and co-workers, it was easy to see that Roy was one of a kind – the Best Kind. The Celebration of Roy’s life was held on Friday, June 29th, 2018 at 7:00pm at the Church of Advent in Plum Point followed by funeral on Saturday, June 30th, 2018 at 2:00 pm at the Pond Cove Cemetery by Rev. HUMBY, MAXWELL WILLIAM

HUMBY, MAXWELL WILLIAM

Passed away June 16th, 2018 at the age of 84 years. Maxwell William Humby (affectionately known as Max and/or Mackie) was born on May 22nd, 1934 to Edward (Sr.) and Jessie (Adams) Humby. Max was born in St. Lunaire-Griquet, NL and moved to Roddickton, NL in the early 1950’s. There Max met and married the love of his life, Margaret Marie Denney on the 24th day of November 1955 with the wedding being officiated by Pastor Samuel G. Newman. Together they were blessed with nine (9) children, six (6) girls and three (3) boys. They were also blessed with fifteen (15) grandchildren and fifteen (15) great-grandchildren. Max was well known and respected in his community and worked for a number of years in various occupations. He was employed with Bowater’s as a wood cutter, Eli Decker’s Garage as a mechanic, E.G. Humby and Sons Oil Company, and Roddickton Town Council as a heavy equipment operator/snow clearing/water and sewer maintenance. After his retirement Max continued to work as a “JACK OF ALL TRADES” paving driveways, potholes, parking lots, etc. Max had a very outgoing personality and enjoyed life to its fullest. He was the BEST Husband, Father, Grandfather, and Great-grandfather that a person could ever ask for. Makie will be sadly missed but those who mourn his passing are blessed with cherished memories of him that will last a lifetime.
